ASUS Zenbook Duo hands-on at CES 2024

Between the Zenbook 17 Fold, Project Precog and previous Zenbook Duo machines, it feels like ASUS has been working towards building a true dual-screen laptop for ages. And now at CES 2024, that time has come with the arrival of the simply named Zenbook Duo.
Similar to Lenovo’s Yoga Book 9i, the Zenbook Duo features two separate screens and a detachable Bluetooth keyboard that can be stashed inside the system for traveling. The difference is that ASUS’ OLED panels look even better, as they are slightly larger at 14 inches, while also offering a 3K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and stylus support. Plus, with a starting price of $1,500, it costs $500 less than the Yoga Book and not that much more than your average high-end ultraportable.

Asus totally upped Lenovo's Yogabook 9i. This really addresses all the cons of the Yogabook 9i's form factor design approach. And $500 cheaper? No brainer between which is better.

Lenovo could be used in tablet mode, the Asus can't, unfortunately. I'm super in doubt which one to buy. Asus seems better in a lot of things, but the fact that the hinges are not 360° and can't be used in tablet mode is disappointing

@@TheKimerus True. Prolly the one con of the Asus. But the Lenovo also uses the mid tier performance Raptor Lake CPU with the integrated XE graphics which is a deal breaker vs the Meteor Lake chips.

Fricking finally they solved this! Have been using two laptops while I owned a zenbook pro duo, just because it was headache to carry the dummy extension for palm rest and you need to have perfect surface to keep all that on! Just hope now this laptop does support Linux and handles all the fun features which it gives in windows!

I can see myself using this at the office or at home when I want a second screen. The thing for me is that I have a dual screen setup with a separate monitor at home and at my office. My second screen is 27 inches. So I don't know where this might fit in with me personally. I would probably use it in normal laptop mode on a plane or in a coffee shop. This is why I love my Zenbook Duo with an extra half screen. It's always in regular laptop mode and yet I always have a second screen. But for content creators, I can see this being awesome.

1:51 This design format is geared towards serious productivity and that will be beneficial for professional users. In the same breath I prefer the Lenovo hybrid concept simply because it enables the use of two separate OSes at the same time. But the versatility of this Asus concept is crazy. 1:51 I'm picturing in my mind that the Lenovo hybrid concept is lighter to carry anywhere and can still be hybrid (use two screens) when you want it to be. 1:58 That tilt right there should automatically render the dual screens into portrait mode. 2:34 Now this part here is where Asus shines to instantly convert the bottom screen into a touchscreen keyboard is magnificent. 4:18 I wonder if the two screens can be detachable (in the future) like Lenovo if it can be made to be detachable then it'll be impeccable. 4:51 In that category it is relatively cheap.

I have the Yoga Book 9i and yes it could use a CPU bump and yes it needs more RAM 32GB and 64GB options would be nice. The keyboard is fine but its battery life is somewhat limited and most importantly it has no backlight. Does the Asus Zenbook Duo keyboard have a backlight? In addition, the pogo connector on the Asus is a great idea. I do hate having to plug a usb cord into my Yoga Book 9i keyboard. It should have the ability to charge when connected to the laptop or stand. As for mouse and pen, while its great that the Yoga Book 9i comes with both, they require batteries and have no USB-C charing ability. I replaced both. The mouse with a Logtech Anywhere mouse and the pen with a Wacom Bamboo Ink Plus. Both are fantastic and more feature rich than those proviced with the laptop. What about pen and mouse with the Asus? Does it come with? As for audio, the 9i's speakers are very good. How's the audio on the Asus?

From what I’ve gathered, the Asus version checked all the boxes you listed + more. Lenovo is nice too but I can’t work with it as the cpu, ram and igpu are substandard to Asus by far.

yeah, the Asus YT channel, website and other Tech reviewers are showing that this laptop comes with a stylus, an envelope sleeve for safe-keeeping / slight propping up and a knapsack.

I wish they would not say start at $1499 and instead tell us how much the showcase version will cost and the specs. Does the $1499 mean Core 5 and 1080p display?

I think a reviewer said they'll have a FHD OLED model at a cheaper price. The $1500 will most likely be the Ultra 7, 16gb, 1TB, 3k OLED model.

@@choiboix Possibly. All reviews (sponsored previews) have been vague, and have no benchmarks or battery stats. So I will wait to see the reality rather than the marketing. Anyway, it is likely to be significantly more expensive in the UK.

at 3:10 he intentionally pushed on the monitor like that so he could show it flexing and basically failing, but he didnt have to talk negatively about it, it showed the flaw in that use case at face value

Yes, but with a gap. Can be used without the keyboard with the virtual onscreen keyboard. It'll be 0.7lb lighter too.

I still believe that devices like this will never be mainstream and may never survive more than a few years. Foldable displays are far more interesting as you can have a massive display that adds value. So, like the Surface Duo, creators will get OTT excited as it is new and shiny, and some people will buy them, but as for potential, I believe Apple and Samsung going by way of foldable tablets/laptops is the future in 3-5 years.

This one may not be for you. But I'll tell you why people & reviewers are making this out to be a revolutionary device. Anyone who benefits from having multiple displays for their work/study will for sure benefit from this form factor. This form factor on a laptop greatly benefits productivity. Whereas on phones and the surface duo as you rightly pointed out productivity might not be the main goal, entertainment is, and having a larger un-split screen benefits portable entertainment.. Now only if they make a 16-inch version, with a dedicated GPU, and sculpt it from magnesium alloy, I'd buy it.
