[ASUS ZENBOOK 17 FOLD REVIEW]
Folding smartphones have made it possible to put tablets in our pockets, or to re-live the halcyon days of our flip-phone youth. But if you take that same flexible-display technology and scale it up to something the size of a big college textbook … you end up with a fully fledged Windows 11 PC that can unfold into a 12.5" laptop … or a giant 17.3" mobile workstation! True, Lenovo beat 'em to the punch, but ASUS now offers the biggest flexible-screen PC (if you can stomach the price tag).
I'm Michael Fisher; join me for my impressions after 12 days with the ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED - and stick around till the end for an early look at the device the Zenbook Fold will be doing battle with: Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Fold (2022 edition).

I'd love to see a BT keyboard dock to the host foldable with four pogo pins. The keyboard could recharge and run as a USB keyboard, then. It seems like such an easy fix. I wonder why Asus and Lenovo haven't done it.
@CampGareth
@CampGareth Жыл бұрын
I've found pogo pins to be unreliable if there's any movement between the two pieces, at least that's the case on my old Dell Venue 11 Pro. Whenever the tablet portion wobbled Windows would switch into tablet then laptop mode on a loop. At least with Bluetooth you expect problems.
@teh_hunterer

@@CampGareth I suppose it depends on how it's implemented. The Magic Keyboard on the iPad Pro doesn't have any of those issues.
@CampGareth
@CampGareth Жыл бұрын
@@teh_hunterer indeed, Surfaces seem to have solved it by letting the bit between the keyboard and pogo pins flex instead. Apple do something similar, big magnets to hold the ipad in place then a couple of hinges to dampen vibration from keystrokes. So long as the pogo pins never move in use they're fine. How you'd do that on the zenbook or thinkpad I don't know, keys you hammer on are right above the bezel where the pins would go...

The flow, the zephyrus G/M series, the fold, the zephyrus duo. Asus is doing incredible and unique work in the laptop space. I really like my G14 but this fold looks like a ton of fun. And I hope, like their other ideas they give it the effort and time the idea deserves. Avoiding the Microsoft or Google route of axing things after 3 seconds if it hasn’t made a billion dollars.

Folding laptops really do see the way forward in terms of bridging the gap between laptop and desktop. It’s amazing that you can now walk around with a 17” all-in-one desktop in your backpack and can shrink it down to a 14” laptop when on the go! I look forward to later iterations when the software is fleshed out and we have a bit more power under the hood to truly be a “desktop replacement” in a broad sense

It is maddening that one of the least polished parts of this folding-display equipped laptop appears to not be the hinge or the screens top layer, not even the crease, but simply the keyboard. Is creating a properly functioning Bluetooth keyboard and ideally adapting more aspects of the Surface Type Cover (which I maintain is excellent considering its form factor and managed to include a backlight half a decade ago) that much more challenging than designing everything needed to accommodate a folding display? Then again, the latter can be explained by development times and having to trim something down to get to market in a timely manner, though on the other hand, the price still makes any compromise hard to swallow. One can hope that this is truly a pre-production issue, though considering the Thinkpad and the fact that other reviewers also reported similar issues, plus the fact that Bluetooth keyboards are not exactly unknown technology, make me doubtful, for this generation. Considering Asus though, yeah, it stands to reason that they will indeed refine this concept, they have a nack for actually sticking to out there concepts till they actually work. Software also still seems to suffer from the cancelation of Andromeda. I get the reasons why Microsoft did that and I understand that their financials did benefit from the added focus on Azure over that project, but I still am saddened thinking what could have been with those changes, having potential for foldables, regular tablets, phones like the Duo and more exotic projects like the HoloLens. Basically, still as amazing a concept as when Lenovo launched their first foldable screen equipped laptop, but as long as the basics aren't sorted out, even the most affluent buyer will struggle to justify the purchase. The new X1 looks incredible, hoping for a review.

Personally, I think having the design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 phone is what laptop computers need. You have a smaller screen on the front of the device (in this case, a 12" screen) for a tablet, but if you open it up, it'll have the laptop form factor or remove the keyboard for the larger screen (in this case, 17"). But then again, that would be too much screen for that size, and the cost would be astronomical.
@ChrisTay229
@ChrisTay229 Жыл бұрын
I feel like that would make the laptops so thick or low power as to be unusable,
@Caidezes
@Caidezes Жыл бұрын
The issue with adding another screen is battery life. The computer would die within a few hours if you used both modes. Plus it'd be easy to damage the big outer screen and a case for it would make the device way too thick.

Makes me wonder what ever happened to that prototype screen thing where buttons/keys/etc could actually rise out due to the material used. Last time I saw it was when the Nintendo Switch was still just the "NX" and that football shaped "leak" using that kind of screen was the one everyone thought it would be.

The 10" form factor with "tucked-in" keyboard is the ideal for a folding notebook in my eyes. The size of this is like dragging around a thick coffee table book, not to mention how clunky everything about this is like the keyboard implementation. That's to say nothing about the alpha-test experience that Windows delivers. Lenovo's external keyboard and stand are just a bit ridiculous. I can't see any world where I'd carry a stack of peripherals like that over an ultrabook and a thin external monitor. I look back at the old Lenovo Yoga Book and how impossibility thin it was and its 10-inch form factor. If they could figure out the hinge with a folding OLED, *that* would be my ideal ultra-portable.
@ziwer1
@ziwer1 Жыл бұрын
I don't really see the difference. The external keyboard is magnetically attached to the device. I actually think it's better to keep them separate because even just by looking at it, it looks like the keyboard could damage the screen. I could also use the new lenovo like we use smartphones with the on screen keyboard without carrying around the keyboard.

I'm loving the idea of this type of pc. At the moment I own a duo and use it as my daily driver for most things that I did use my laptop for apart from the complex work. With that I carry a dell laptop with touch screen and a portable monitor for multi tasking. As it stands works great but I definitely see something like this working better for me. Great 1/2nd gen of this and I'm expecting Microsoft to make a folding surface along the way and when they do I'm expecting it to set the standard like all the surface lines have. I've personally never had a good track record with Asus, so I'm glad to hear it's coming out with a fold to compete with Lenovo. With lessons learned from both sides, I'm hoping a better price point will emerge and Lenovo will continue releasing different models at those good price points to help cover the gaps my Fold 3 can't quite close on with my video editing and audio recording. But I waited 3 generations to buy a folding phone, I can keep waiting for Lenovo to get it right.

Now these size foldable pc makes sense. As they are more usable range. I’m sure the ASUS is incredible to see in person. What type of cpu is it? The ultra low or more powerful cpu?

I love this form factor. Hope it becomes the norm. Prefer the look of the X1 but I guess the ASUS is only Gen1.

Keystrokes issue… I’ve had that continuous run of one letter on my Mac mini M1 with a wired Apple keyboard too…………………………….. it’s not just a windows problem.

I used to hate Asus laptops(I had one running Vista that would bsod at least 5 times a day due to terrible motherboard design) but now seeing their Duo laptops or the Zenbooks with high refresh rate OLED displays I'm positively surprised to see them doing that well. I'm kinda torn between buying the ZenBook Duo and a MacBook M1 as both have their ups and downs

Michael, Given the competition, will you recommend the old X1 fold on discount, to the battery of that one not acceptable?

I'd actually be down to try the X1 Fold, especially since it now has the TrackPoint. The Asus, OTOH, doesn't have the horsepower I'd need to justify something that big.

I wish they'd work with Wacom again. The ASUS VivoTab 8 (with Wacom EMR) was a fantastic device. With a modern processor (say AMD) and in a foldable form factor? I'd buy one in an instance.

What we need is 34 inch OLED 120+hz display inside 17.3 inch laptop package with RTX 3060+ GPU. That would be insanity. Whole workstation / gaming setup in your 🎒

Great review. looks like a great flexible. They'll probably iron out all the issues with future updates. However, the decision to use an Intel processor in this machine is inexcusable. The degradation in battery life and performance makes a big difference, especially when there are so few heat dissipation mechanisms.

Very interested in how this could be as a drawing tablet. It's like having a portable 17in cintiq or kamvas but able to be folded down for all your normal laptop needs.

Wouldn't the crease be a problem when drawing?
@C.Wilson

@@Geekosification because of the larger area I'd say no and using the z fold 4 for drawing and it's crease isn't the best but it doesn't stop you from being able to draw.
