Investors have always screened stocks, looking for bargains. In fact, Ben Graham developed screens for cheap stocks in Intelligent Investor that many value investors draw upon. In this session, I start with a quick introduction to why and how we screen for stocks, and then spend the bulk of the session on the mechanics of screening for stocks on S&P Capital IQ. While you may not have access to Capital IQ, there are other global datasets that you can now access, at relatively low cost, and much of what I say in this session will work on other databases as well.

I agree with you that this method is good for screening. It also might be good for investors if they know which characteristics have real predictive power, statistically. A good example is momentum that turns insignificant when profitability is controlled. Moreover, within a same category, say valuation, some characteristics have more predictive power than the others (e.g. P/E vs. P/B).

why are the operating metrics not showing up under the financial information section in cap iq? I'm accessing cap iq through my college. Are there more "limited" versions of cap iq than the one you are using?

Thanks Professor, if I may ask, do you have a view on Minings & Metals sector, do profitable companies with growth rates of 10%+ and cheap prices make a good buy in current environment?
@andorealc6218

Been following prof damodarans screening method for a while. The underlying premise is that value investing is asset priced cheaply relative to its fundamental value. We don’t have a good way to measure value therefore we can use “cheap” as a starting point. Resource/mining companies always show up in these “cheap” filters. Unless you are in their business and know how to distinguish value from crap, those screen result are usually cheap for a reason...

Why are you using questionable metrics that you've repeatedly warned are vague or hard to explain (i.e. P/E, net income, net income growth) as example criteria?
