12-year-old Nathanael Koh is taking not one, but two university degrees - in mathematics and music! As if that wasn’t enough, he is also the composer-in-residence for the Kids Philharmonic Orchestra, writing symphonies for the music ensemble. But Nathanael’s advanced academic ability makes it difficult for him to relate to and befriend his peers.
16-year-old Dhruv Manoj once broke the world record at a memory championship, recalling more names and faces (96!) than anyone before him! But he tried to teach his friends his mnemonic tricks to help in the exams, the results were less than desired.
Is being a teen genius all that it is cracked up to be?

Nat seems like a wholesome kid. Idk why some people here have to give backhanded remarks. I understand the concern with gifted children and how they end up in a burnt out mess due to them missing out on their youth. All this is part of the aftermath of having exponential growth at such a young age. However, he is still a very young boy. Sure he’s incredibly gifted I mean wow who would imagine a 12 year old doing a degree?? While Nat lacks the company of peers/social interaction, he does not seem totally clueless towards the outside world as he interacts with people outside of his family. Adding on, he seems to be open to feedback as he mentioned that he is open to seeking advice on how to make friends. This reflects his level of self awareness and I believe he will be able to make friends in the future :)

Ridiculous how so many people here are predicting with confidence that Nat will have bad experiences later in life or saying that you wouldn't want your child to be like him. It's unthinking and ignorant to make such comments when he's a kid and could be reading these! If you've been around smart yet humble and grounded people like Nat you will KNOW that he is likely to make very meaningful connections down the road because he's waiting for people to catch up to his level. Go Nat!

That's cause he is being put up to task which make him skip his childhood. Human development is supposed to be in chronological stages. We don't jump from stage 1 to stage 99 right away

Kudos to Nat's parents. He's such a special kid. They've given Nat the best education/ exposure (eg, finding him a music teacher, creating youtube videos), not limiting his abilities/creativity. 🤗🤗🤗

Hello Nathanael, some suggestions here! Perhaps you may volunteer in various roles such as being a teacher volunteer to children from disadvantaged backgrounds as a way to improve your social skills and to share your knowledge as well! Wish you all the best in your future endeavours!

Hi. Yes. I am currently volunteering and teaching the lower ability students in music theory. It's with the organisation Beautiful Minds. It is really an enriching experience and I am trying my best to help them as much as I can. I believe that knowledge is not meant to be kept but shared with others for good.

Nat - you are awesome and so inspiring. Friendship takes time. With your personality I am sure they will come. What is important is not quantity but quality of friends. Good luck with your exams and degrees as well as search for good friends.

Yes. I agree with you. Do many adults here have huge groups of close friends or just a few? So sometimes it's strange that society imposes there is a need for large group of friends in order to socialise well 🤣 So sometimes it's important to develop great friendships slowly over time. This is how I think.

As an introvert myself, i dont enjoy loud and meeting with many people, and it drains me just to keep up, text them and keep the relationship running. Nat! I believe that you are very sociable seeing the way you communicate. One thing I can say is, during events or occasions where there are many people, you could try finding people with the same vibe and start a simple conversation by bringing up something that you and the other person could relate to. For example, when it is raining and very humid you could start with an "it's a very humid day isn't it?" and if they respond continue on with the conversation. Try to find a common point to the point where you are chatting comfortably with others, that's how I met and made friends with my current friends. Hope it helps

Hi Nat, I am a kind like you. I am 10 years old, and homeschool. I also study A level math now, but my favourite subject is computer science. I've just done A level CS , now I am still waiting for the result. I also don't have a real friend at the same age. I wish we can be friends. But I don't really like music 😊. Such interesting personalities. Great job Cna. If Nat is reading this, maybe he could think about learning a sport, be it football, rugby, tennis or squash, all these will give him a chance to get to know other kids of his age, thus improving his social skills. have some fun and companionship 😊

i'm struck by how self-aware nathanael is (18:43) - but yes nathanael, work on your social skills! talk to people; ask questions about them, etc. you might find dale carneige's how to win friends and influence people useful; a ton of good tips for interacting with others and making friends. there might also be communities you could participate and socialise in (e.g. MENSA?).

@@bruhbro1181 i used to be quite similar when i was younger as well - very intelligent, awful social skills. but it's called skills for a reason: like all skills, it can be learnt, and has to be put into practice! the more you interact with others/put your skills to use, the better you get at it.

Our only worry is that we might not be able to keep up with you on topics like maths and music although I am a fan of blues and jazz! If Nat ever sees this, my advice to you is that it is nice to have friends your age but it's not important if you don't have any yet. Kids will take some time to grow up. When you're older they'll start to make good friends and you'll eventually find yourself with too many friends. In the meantime, read books and watch movies or dramas. You can learn surprisingly a lot from the ways characters and relationships develop along the storyline.

@@NathanaelKoh Don't ever dumb down, pursue knowledge at any and all costs. Just make sure to watch your health (especially eyesight). Try not to limit yourself to Singapore's borders. Suggest that you focus less on language (non-english) and arts. Always remember to keep asking why. You will understand the truth when you're not allowed to ask the questions. Where do you see yourself in 12 years? Another Singaporean? Another average human being? Or a pioneer in the next advancement of human civilisation?

if my parents were this rich and could provide their child with private property big houses, so many books, private tutors and homeschooling, i would be much smarter, my siblings too... this is why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, it's undeniable. he has privileges many of us don't, and yet he will still be rich whne he grows up bc he is smarter than so many of us as he has so many resources. poverty cycle is so messed up, and the rich are so oblivious to the struggles of middle to lower class citizens

I use a calculator for even 1+1. I envy and feel sorry for him at the same time. Especially when he had to bend over and squint at math formulas; the math whiz's eyes will basically be shot by the time he is in his 20s. I understand he enjoys the challenge but for me, the academic years were tears, lots of head scratching and sleepless nights. I swore that I will never return to school unless it's for short

It's really cool to see very intelligent young people. Unfortunately usually those talents are being wasted. Someone who was very smart in school became later a mailman, just because he didn't know what to do, but usually most of the time they become professors. I just would like them to become the next Elon Musk, changing the world for the better. It's great they get a lot of help from either the schools or from their parents. But imagine what could be possible, if they would also discuss numerous issues the world has and to ask them how they would fix it.

Let’s do a follow up on him in 20 years. History shows that all these genius kids ended up working very normal jobs. So why waste the precious years of youth to become a human calculator and still end up more or less the same as some other kid who just spent their youth doing youth things (fun, chasing girls, parties, outdoor stuff.)

There are some abilities you may lose as you grow older if you don't pursue them. Sometimes it is better to pursue what you like and not regret wasting your talent or time. After all, you're not going to spend time learning math again while you're working. So if he wants to learn math and music at that age to the best of his abilities, why not? Either way, as long as he is doing what he likes the most at the moment, I don't think it is a waste.

Nothing wrong with him ending up in a normal job in 20 years' time. It seems like he's having fun pursuing academics and even if he doesn't continue down this path the journey itself would be valuable.

cultivating the wrong thing for this young boy. social skills are so much more important, no matter how smart is he. if he lacks social skills and ability to communicate nobody will care, employers will choose charm over cleverness

kids like him have low social skills, awkward in social setting. I rather my kid be creative and have great social skills. And i want my kid to enjoy being dumb during his/her childhood and not studying all the time. As parent, we give guidance, but not dictating a regime. he is born smart, good for him, but it'd not be something i wish upon my kids. Turns out my kids are now studying in UCLA and UC Berkeley, not too bad for parents like me who just nudge my kids once in a while. But my kids party too much nowadays, and who knows what they r smoking lol..i dont really care.. Let young adult do young adult things, let them make mistakes (as long as not grave mistakes lol)
