Today put in a bottle of the new stuff in my 1998 Subaru with 235,000 miles for the weepy rear main seal. Doesn't leak enough to need to add oil between 3,000 mile changes but leaks on the exhaust and gets stinky. Never tried this so will see what happens? Update it's a couple of weeks later and it seems to be working. Yay

Hey Josh happy new year! Yeah, just busy with life and work. I have tried to contact the people who make this stuff but so far I have not had any success. Plus, if they reformulated it they will probably not admit to doing so. Overall it's pretty disappointing since AT-205 was a major weapon in making cars last 25+ years. I hope you have a great 2023 bud!

Even with the newer non-smell updated formula, it would be good for a "test Update" on it's ability to stop leaks in cars & trucks oil leaks. I used this newer formula on our '15 X5 in the rear differential about 4-5 months ago. The rear pinion seal started to leak after I did a R&R on the diff fluid at approx 86,000 miles. (I don't understand why this leak started after the change of fluid. I used a good grade "Redline" GL5 fluid that Redline said would work) Anyway, I put in (1) ounce of AT205, topped off the fluid level, and cleaned all the leaked gear oil off the diff with brake cleaner, and the leak stopped withing a couple days. It's my understanding that that this AT205 just has an additive that "softens & swells" old seals. Maybe it's been modified a little to meet EPA requirements, but it still has the Diethylene glycol monoethyl ether greater than >90%, as shown on their MSDS sheet dated 24-May-2021. Thanks for your video.

Semper Fi! Glad to hear it worked for you. There have been a lot of guys telling me it works. But I've just had a significant number of subs tell me it didn't work at all (which is different than in years past). AT-205 is a polymer that swells and conditions seals. And for me and others it's been a major way to keep vehicles on the road... a key weapon in my arsenal to keep my cars looking and running great. BTW I've had lots of oil leaks after going with high quality synthetic oils in my engines, trans, diffs, etc. My dad years ago (former rep who sold engine rebuilding equipment) "Synthetic oil is awesome but it goes everywhere... some places you don't want it to go." So I've done exactly what you've done over the years. And the historic "nail polish smelling" version of AT-205 never, ever failed me. Thanks for watching. I hope you're a subscriber and make those cars last baby!

Dang. Now that I think about it, the bottle I got a few years back doesn't have a pungent smell to it either. That was the first and only bottle of AT-205 I've purchased (because I haven't even used the entire bottle yet). Glad you made this video. I'll keep the info you shared in mind when using the product. It's one thing if they reformulated it to eliminate the smell due to customer complaints, but if it doesn't work as well either, that worries me.

Will be disappointed if it is not as good. I did just put a bottle of the new stuff in my 1999 Honda Accord. Great car with 318000 miles but I found the pcv valve was stuck (my bad. Should have replaced about three times) and I think that started rear seal leak. I was losing about 1/2 cup of oil per day. Aft a 30 minute drive, i see about 15 drops. Much inproved! Will see after the recommended 5 hours. So far, it seems to work still.

I added AT-205 to my 76 VW Bus camper. I''ve had it at 3 top classic car mechanics and they all say it's in great condition accept for the slight oil leak. Well, It's defiantly leaking a quarter size drip a day. So I put in the 205. 5 hundred miles later it's still leaking. Can I ADD more 205?. Will it be bad for the engine to add more ?. No one says that it's a major issue but the Bus still leaks with the 205. What should I do now?. Is another bottle going to hurt the engine. ? Reply

That "nail polish remover" smell is "usually" acetone.. Acetone is not good for rubber and can actually "eat through" the material.. So, maybe it was effective in making the seals softer and expand more, but long term it may be weakening the rubber..
@TheSwitzAutomotive
@TheSwitzAutomotive 2 ай бұрын
I researched it and it's not acetone... it's another chemical, which I don't presently recall. One of my subs explained the chemical is bad for the environment but good at swelling rubber gaskets and o-rings... thus the change. All I know is AT-205 is only about 70% as good as it used to be, but it is still the best on the market. Thanks for watching. I hope you're a subscriber Phil and make those cars last baby!

@@TheSwitzAutomotive Thanks for the explanation.. I also looked further and the "recipe" for AT-205 in 2018 was just 1 chemical.. diethylene glycol monoethyl ether.. all glycol ethers are classed as hazardous. it can cause severe health symptoms, up to and including death.. Even skin contact and breathing the fumes can cause issues. So, I can see why it was changed.. You might want to dispose of your old bottle at the local fire dept..

This additive will only help if the leak is caused by a hardened or flattened seal that the swelling compounds can cause to push out more. High mileage oil has the same swellers just in much lower concentrations as this stuff can destroy seals if they over expand. However, if the leak is due to a torn seal, failed seal spring, etc. it's not going to do anything.

I went to smell it, a little went up my nose, a lil worried about cancer but my nose hasn't dripped ever since. Suggestion... what you were used to was actually rancid product that was warehoused until they could find a buyout company. You may have been using 10 year old product. Sorry bro, I don't trust your methods and experience. If its just a solvent missing, there are many many alternatives. I suggest that if the formula changed that the original high potency solvents may have worked well w dirtier engines, cutting thru grime and facilitating a raw bond of product to seal. Maybe this "new" formula is sufficient for cleaner engines? Do an oil change first. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about companies making greener formulas that aren't as effective, it hits home when you bury someone who died of chemical caused cancer. Believe me. I'm ok to avoid cancer and thank any company for formulating away from causing health defects. It happens w body building products a lot. Noone knows why a product dissapears, they know it worked better than the rest short term. Yet, cancer takes longer to express than it takes a stop leak to work. Dirty oil itself is cancer causing. Compounding carcenogens is not the answer. That said, I'm gonna use the stuff. Still a new car is cheaper than treating cancer (for most of us.)
