"Nobody wants to look at me." That is absolutely not true. You are a good looking woman and you have put so much effort into your outfit, and those glasses are stunning. But hey, even if you weren't a joy to behold, you clearly have so many other talents that display a depth of character that is of far more worth than your appearance.

I am inspired after watching you teach hat making. Hat making is something I have wanted to do for years but thought it would be too expensive; that I would need to go to university, or some other expensive learning institution. I love wearing hats and I make crochet hats. I even made a straw hat once. Now, after watching your video, I will be getting started making hats. Wow! I am excited. Thank you so very much for this video. I am subscribed.

This tutorial was very informative. Thank you. You're so personable and I like your running commentary - you called it ramble (lol) but it wasn't rambling at all. It was informative commentary and that kept me engaged. I also like that you gave the reasons for or against what you were doing. I would have love to have seen you shellac one of the hats & show the result Thanks for mentioning and showing the cheaper options for a wig block. The wooden blocks are so expensive so it's nice to know there are cheaper options around. . .

Very intresting... Thank you for this video. I dress a bit essentric but love my hats. I am however extremely picky, because I don't like Fedora's I am more of a homburg hat person.. I get mine custom made at Baron Hat shop in California where they have been making hats for Hollywood since the 1920's. I have two homburg hats and one Durby. But I have been wanting a short top hat for a long time. I also love your outfit by the way.. Continue to be your creative self, God only know there are very few of us left. 💘💘

@GreenBunnyHats
@GreenBunnyHats 3 жыл бұрын
You could use wool coat to pull and make a hat with care and patience. Just keep it wet while working!! The easiest thing to start with is getting something you can pull the felt over to give it a round shape. You need to keep it hot and wet while shaping to keep it from ripping.

I would love to see a video on re-shaping a hat. I left a wool hat in my car one day in Summer, and it was upside down on an object that crushed out the edge of the crown on one side. The other side is still nice and stiff, but the crushed side is soft and bent. I thought of cutting an oval disc of wood and shoving it into the hat after steaming the soft side....or maybe pulling the whole thing down over a rounded edge and making a really tall bowler.

Hi, Bunny. Your video is really well-done. I like that you show the techniques clearly. You mentioned that you are in Florida. What city are you in? I am new to hat making and am working with raffia. Do you know where I can find a hat block for a boater type crown that would not be super expensive like a wood block? I would like it to be the size of my head also: 21 1/2". I want to do a red fedora hat also, and need a hat block for that as well that I can afford.

When you first started, you started with a bowl like piece made out of fur felt.. how did you get that material to become a bowl first??
@GreenBunnyHats
@GreenBunnyHats 3 жыл бұрын
there are two types one is called a hood (without a "brim") and the other is called a capline and they come pre worked so they are easier to work with. If you start with a plain piece of felt there is a peaked dome shape that is used to work the felt - it has to be thicker than what you would want to end up with or you will have holes

QUESTION?? I have a red (wool, I think) hat that has a round shape in the top like your form. I do not like it and would like to know if I can steam it, and reshape the top of it into a type of fedora looking hat with the folds and sink in? (like a gambler hat). After I steam it, will it hold its shape or would I have to shellac it? Great job on the video. Was thinking of maybe trying to make one, but I think I'll stick to sewing. Thank you.

do you sand felt hats as well as the fur?
@GreenBunnyHats

The hats that I work with are wool felt and fur felt hats- I tend not to sand the wool felt hats since they end up oddly fuzzy. I do sand the fur felts always to give them a nice even texture and feel.

Also, how do you go from having that floppy shape that you pulled over the hat shaper to having a straight brim? does the brim have to be steamed straight, or will just adding a wire and stiffeners make it straight? Or if you want to make a hat with a straight brim, should the brim and the crown be two separate pieces sewn together?

I use millinery wire and the shellac to stiffen the brim - you can use quite a bit to make something hard as a rock! I steam the brim flat with heavy duty irons and lots of water. The crown and brim can be one piece or separate depending on what you are making. My top hats are always two pieces but I can do a fedora with just one capline.

If you wanted actual velvet you would want to do a buckram core form or there is velour which is a velvet type of felt- it acts just like velvet and feels just like velvet - you must be careful you don't burn it. The buckram core is a several piece construction - sharing a video that shows that type of construction from Stephen Jones: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptl7Zbh02dq9cYU.html

@GreenBunnyHats

You would want a large mens capline - the brim is very big. LOTS of shelac to stiffen after you form your crown and wire for the brim to keep it from flexing, You would need a hat shaper or a hat block for the crown.

@GreenBunnyHats
@GreenBunnyHats 3 жыл бұрын
it depends on what type of wool , it may need to be cleaned, treated and sanded down to get that pilly/frizzy bits off. But depending on the type of wool they may have tried to make it fuzzy and the fuzz may have fallen off. It's hard to tell not seeing it. there are places that do hat repair- seeing it in person they can give you the best advice on how to best bring the hat back to life.
