At least 22 tourists died in freezing temperatures after being stranded in their vehicles in northern Pakistan, where thousands had flocked to enjoy the snow. Some 1,000 vehicles are still stranded in Murree, 40 miles northeast of the capital Islamabad. 'The local people are delivering blankets and food. Now we are only allowing vehicles carrying blankets and food towards Murree,' Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Pakistan's interior minister, said. Army platoons and paramilitary forces have been deployed to help the civil administration in rescue operations, he said.

Jameel Rahman Well why go there in the winter when it's snowing. You're asking for trouble. Plenty of videos on youtube showing just how dangerous the roads over there become during snowfall. Who in their right mind puts themselves and their families at risk just to go and see a bit of snow.

Well majority of the folks here don't have access to weather forecast technology, and are more focused with the fact that they are basically sizzling steaks on an active frying pan for most of the year. Secondly, this type of snowfall is unusual for a place like Murree

For the people in the comment section saying that they thought Pakistan is a desert country yes Pakistan do have some deserts but Pakistan also has more glaciers than anywhere on this planet except Antarctica out of 100 , 40 of the world's highest mountains are found in Pakistan. Temperature falls to -62° in Northern Pakistan And muree ( the place where this incident happened ) isn't even northern Pakistan in winters tourists are not allowed to visit northern Pakistan because of extreme cold that's why majority of people went to muree and the road got blocked.

Here in London, the authorities put a warning sign on the river when the tidal waves are high. There is no authority standing there stopping people jumping in the river or boating! Jeez. Didn't know it snowed in Pakistan. That's some heavy snow. Outside early this morning, like in the teens. It was that cold in Pakistan. 1,000 vehicles. Two lanes. Leaving your home, these days, can seem like a great idea, but there is the WORST luck to be experienced at the drop of a hat, ALL over the world. I mean. People sometimes assume that if their motives are to please their wife and kids, that they're somehow protected. There was that dude, who got stuck in his chimney, years back, trying to surprise his family on Christmas Eve. They had NO idea where he disappeared to. A co-worker of my father got run over on a highway, after his kids saw a turtle trying to cross it and he got out to save it. Even if you come prepared, with a car that can maneuver well on any terrain or weather, the guy in from or back of you or way ahead might be driving a disaster.

Thankfully made a trip to Patriata on 29 January that year Edit: As a Pakistani, i can understand the excitement for snow, it gets way too hot here so snow is a bit of a relief. But did it cross NOBODY'S minds to go like, 4 or something days BEFORE the warnings? If before wasn't an option, then couldn't anybody think to try waitin for the conditions on the road to comfy up a little? That much snow doesn't melt for atleast 4 cold weeks, so provided that continuous snowfall spells dont occur, there is MORE THAN ENOUGH TIME to enjoy lots of snow.

I'm in Canada we have our fair share of blizzards and snowstorms here in the East coast. I'm guessing cars didn't have winter tires so they got stuck in the snow? This is tragic.

It doesn't snow in southern Pakistan, most visitors were from south, hence, unaware of the dangers of snow.

Yes there are some deserts in Pakistan but also to state Pakistan have more glaciers than anywhere on this planet except Antarctica out of 100 , 40 of the world's highest mountains are found in Pakistan. Temperature falls to -62° in Northern Pakistan And muree ( the place where this incident happened ) isn't even northern Pakistan in winters tourists are not allowed to visit northern Pakistan because of extreme cold that's why majority of people went to muree and the road got blocked.

The problem is there are no authorities and no police to prevent tragedies from happening! If they've blocked roads and stopped thousands from travelling just like they're using lockdowns to stop people from sneezing and coughing then we wouldn't see humans exited about snow risk their lives and others!!!

And why should government waste resources when they already alarted people about weather conditions they warned people about it but they didn't listen.i mean this is my honest question why people have to do something which they were warned not to do we live in a world where we can get information about almost everything at anytime yet ignore everything and put our and our loved ones life at stake. I think its high time that we should stop blaming others for our own faults we need to take responsibility of our own actions rather than start putting blaming others for no reason
