Unable to purchase a $50,000 digital projector, a group of quirky film fanatics in rural Pennsylvania fight to keep a dying drive-in theater alive by screening only vintage 35mm film prints and working entirely for free. At The Drive-in is the award winning underdog story about The Mahoning Drive-in Theater.

3:29 Rest in peace, Jeff Mattox, the owner and projectionist of the Mahoning Drive-In Theater, who sadly, passed away just last week. He will be sorely missed, but the legacy of his now-thriving drive-in theater will live on.

Rest well, Jeff. I hope you are the lead projectionist in the great drive-in in the sky. I have watched the documentary over and over again and you are the overwhelming reason why. Even though I never got to meet you, I admired you greatly. Again, rest well, good sir.

Great documentary. Got me feeling nostalgic. We have 16 Drive Ins left in CA. But that’s nothing in such a big state as ours. ~ My condolences go out to all Jeff’s family and friends. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Also we are glad to here these awesome folks are carrying on and thriving. The legacy continues. 🎬📽🍿👽🛸

I had the privilege of growing up in Ft. Collins Colorado where we have the Holiday Twin Drive In. Some of the best memories I had were my summers spent at the drive in. I fell in love with drive ins because of that theater. I've been to others but none seemed to have that classic feel. There's something tangible and special about keeping them the way they used to be. We can't let them die. We just can't.

Great documentary. Only the last 2 minutes is muted for some reason...? and then it comes back for the last 5 seconds, "We hope you had a wonderful time, come back soon."

The Santee Twin drive in is where I caught the bug back in the 90’s. It’s been in business since ‘58. The development has filled in and surrounded it. It is currently threatened by becoming another warehouse. These things should be preserved like national monuments.

Back in 2002 the _last_ still surviving and operative Drive-In in the Netherlands was forced to close down. It was a half hour drive from where I live and so I had the pleasure of watching an all-night horror show (4 horror movies in a row, including Dario Argento's "Sleepless") a year before it closed down. Watching horror movies on an enormous IMAX-sized screen from the comfort of your own car while eating warm greasy fast food and getting stoned on some good weed, but also still not forgetting to uphold that ancient Drive-In tradition of honking the horn every time blood and/or boobs is shown! Good memories, but the sad thing is that Drive-In Movie Theaters and videostores are now cinematic experiences from the past, gone and never to return, just like my youth.

There is a drive in movie theater near me and still running today. It plays newer movies. It runs during late spring to early fall. It was built in the 1950’s. I haven’t been towards it since 2005. I don’t liked to stay up late anymore or even driving at night. To me it was fun to go. My first time was in the early 1980’s.

Back in my day, there were 6 drive-ins within a 6 mile radius of where I lived. Today... NOTHING! I sure miss them. Of course, I can only imagine the prices of food at the snack bar if they survived to this day.

As many people who still want film, I like to think eventually movie studios would cave and start releasing on film again. But I bet the films will be more expensive than before. I don`t know, just guessing.

I can understand how this projectionist feels but progress moves on. I assume the horse and buggy business took a terrible hit at the start of the industrial revolution and when Henry Ford made cars affordable for working-class people. You can either buy a digital projector or run older movies. I love classics and older movies. Unfortunately, I'd be the only customer coming in to see Jeff's movies. I'd rather watch the older flicks but if Jeff was to cater to me, the poor man would go outta business!
