Since 1986, Annalakshmi in Singapore has been serving pay-as-you-wish meals to people based on the Hindu philosophy of 'Atithi Devo Bhava" (guest is God), so that no one will be turned away just because they could not afford a meal. Using recipes passed down orally by grandmothers and mothers from the first generation of volunteers, the restaurant has seen close to 700 recipes originating from different parts of India! For some, it may just be a buffet spread but for many of the regulars, it is a familiar taste of home.

As a Hindu Indian, single and vegetarian, I was struggling in Singapore when it came to food. I was in tears when I found this place and had a truly satisfying meal. I was there whenever work permitted me during my 4 years of stay there. Almost twice or thrice a week. Please accept my heartfelt thanks. This place deserves an exclusive award for the concept and for the food quality. There should be many many more such loving spaces in this world. Im out of the rats race now and into a spiritual life.

So, i am half Chinese half Nepalese and i wasn't "smart" enough to study in Chinese government school so i moved to nepal as you would expect i could only spend $3 on meals everyday so i would skip meal sometimes i used to go at this cheap restaurant where i used to order only half the dish and pay half the price the owner noticed this and i was a regular customer so one day he decides to give me a full meal and a half meal and says i only need to pay for 1/2 meal and it wasn't necessary to pay for the full meal and this continued for a month and i finally got a job so i went to the restaurant to pay for all the meals i hadn't paid for but unfortunately the restaurant was bought. They went bankrupt because they would do the same for other college and highschool students that couldn't afford to have a full stomach. I wish i could one day meet the owner and give him a hug 😥.

Dessie Stone lot of times I think it has to do with social pressure and the feeling of responsibility and community. I bet something like this would work much better in a small close nit community where everyone knows everyone. I know a similar thing kinda happens where I’m from. There are a few restoraunts which wave your bill because it’s cash only and you only have your card. It would be super easy to just not ever pay, but you know the people and you feel bad about it, so you enevitably pay the bill when you have the money and give them a signed card for the hassle. Home town dynamics can be a wonderful thing.

Yeah it is his business because if people do not pay who is losing out him. But if some people over pay them I guess it evens our balance. But if he is doing this for his religion and wants people to pay as much as they want then this is perfect because then in the eyes of his religion who is he to question how much ppl give it’s their offering of donation.

My own personal account ... in Penang, Malaysia we have Annalakshmi too with same concept (not sure related). Back then, I was so hungry and vegetarian so decided to have a meal there. Boy oh boy .. the meal was heaven when it comes to a starving stomach. After done, that is when I realize my wallet was missing ... imagine now how embarrassing it was for me .. but politely inform that I have no wallet with me and will be back. The person said it is ok, no worries and even ask me to go for another round with chapati's ... those words were amazing and I totally felt heaven again. I came back and did what was right .. Go ahead and try it. There is no such thing as "Indian" per se. Generally there are 4 - South Indian, North Indian, West Indian and East Indian/Bengali. Every regional offering is massively different. (Point Being: a hot dog in NY is a hot dog LA. But in India food changes according to region) Have a crack at South Indian food.

Tbh one of the main reasons why such a concept can work in singapore is because there is a very low chance youll find homeless people nowadays.. plus singapore is a small country so that makes it even more unlikely to have homeless people visit the restaurant. But of course, im not complaining about the concept of this restaurant. It's a really good thing to have people cook and eat without the obligation of getting or paying a certain amount.. nothing is forced.
