Kind of and I highly recommend because the "AR10" carbine length (also known as A5 length) allows an AR15 carbine buffer to be used in a large frame AR. The "kind of" is that the "AR10" isn't really an AR10, what happened is Armalite scaled down the AR10 to become the AR15, then the AR10 kind of died. Later on Eagle Arms bought the Armalite trademarks including AR10 and then scaled up an AR15 to make an "AR10" that is somewhat similar to a real AR10 but not the same thing, then many other companies did the same thing but everyone did it a little different which is why people have so much trouble tuning large frame ARs, there is no real standard except possibly the most common and compatible platforms based on the DPMS LR308 pattern. The downside of the LR308 is that it uses an AR15 carbine length buffer tube with a shorty buffer. If it is tuned properly, no problem but if it isn't you might need to delve in to the world of heavy weight shorty buffers. If you go with the "AR10" length buffer tube and need a heavier buffer, it's as simple as buying an AR15 H buffer, H2 or H3. There are heavier buffers but that's a good start and you can find all three of those in stock either at a local retailer or mail order. The alternative is ordering a custom shorty buffer from a guy named Slash. I bet he's a great guy but I don't want one guy to be my only option. I'm not sure if POF is making/selling this any more but they had a kit for their large frame AR that included a nice "AR10" length buffer tube, an AR15 type standard buffer and the appropriate spring. It was easy, one stop shopping and I think the buffer tube quality was pretty much on par with a Vltor A5. Armalite (A.K.A. Eagle Arms) also sold "AR10" carbine buffer tubes but were almost constantly out of stock when I wanted one. I think Palmetto State Armory and maybe another company make "AR10" length buffer tubes on the low end but I think I ordered one from PSA and got AR15 length (it was cheap so it went in to the spares pile so I'm not too upset). I always say this again and again and again but the best way to build a large frame AR is to get matching upper, lower and LPK based on the LR308 platform, add an "AR10" length carbine buffer system for carbines, then you can pick the rest of the parts from all the LR308 pattern parts made by dozens of companies. The only other compatibility issue is gas tube length and for that just make sure you buy a gas tube that matches the barrel. My preference is Aero M5E1 Enhanced for the lower, upper and partial LPK with their least expensive line of Mlok tube handguards, "AR10" length carbine buffer system, Toolcraft NiB BCG, Criterion barrel (in 6.5 Creedmoor if you like shooting 1,000 yards), adjustable gas block, a nice trigger and furniture, gas tube, muzzle device to suit. Oh, I like the old Mega latchless charging handle too. A build like that will fall together like a Mil-Spec AR15 build and the combo of nice Criterion barrel, free float handguard and nice trigger is going to make a sub MOA rifle without breaking the bank.

Using a armalite ar10 gas tube in rifle length systems will usually solve most of your short stroke problems. It engages the gas key on the bcg better and allows for proper build up of pressure. I cannot stress this enough. So no ... gas tubes are not the same on rifle length guns. Always use the armalite length tube.

Built my aero AR-10... Aero Charging handle seems to bend when operating the gun, this causes either the CH to get stuck when pushed back to lock in receiver, or worst case BCG gets stopped by the banana booger hook.... I've used Knights armament M110s in the army for years, never had an issue with the charging handle bending, impeding the operation of the rifle. Is this an AR-10 quirk? Better CH options that don't bend out there??

Nope, the buffer tube, weight, and spring have absolutely nothing to do with accuracy. If the gun is locking up and unlocking correctly, they're doing their job.

Randy, I have a Ruger SFAR 308. I am able to run a few AR15 parts on this rifle. I am looking for a larger charging handle than the stock military charging handle due to where my scope is mounted. I plan to run a suppressor part-time on this rifle. What impact would there be if any to running a charging handle with the venting ports full-time. I am new to the rifle and I am learning that it can be tricky dialing in the adjustable gas block to reduce recoil and control shell ejection.
@At3tactical
@At3tactical Жыл бұрын
Solid question! Great thing about most adjustable gas blocks these days (the good ones anyway), they have tactile click adjustments, upwards of 10-clicks or more. Meaning when you're running suppressed, your adjustment setting might be a wide open 8-9 clicks. When your can is off, your setting might be more of a 2-3 clicks. Obviously arbitrary numbers here, but the point is by the time you've really put some time behind your setup in both instances...you'll know exactly where to set it and when. As to the charging handle, I'd say you probably wouldn't notice the difference in ejection with/without the ported charging handle....and if so, I wouldn't suspect it would cause you to change a click or two on your gas block. ****BUT This does bring up a great topic for us to take to the range and find out for sure! Hope that helps and thanks for checking us out! -Randy

Should also add that... We have a SFAR in the warehouse, but I haven't had a chance to play with it just yet. I would imagine they didn't make the charging handle proprietary to the SFAR, but I'll have to find out for myself. :)

Been tweaking an AR10 build lately. Its a PSA 18" 416R stainless barrel in an Aero M5 upper/lower combo. Started out with a flash hider and standard spring & shorty-length AR10 buffer. Ended up putting a surefire brake on plus the BCM MK2 intermediate length buffer tube & rifle spring, but it wouldn't lock back with a Mk2 intermediate length (4 inch) buffer. So the current combo is an H3 carbine buffer (3.25 inches) with BCM's mk2 tube and rifle spring. The gun locks back every time on an empty mag/manually, it is noticeably softer with this combo + brake, and lengthening the travel of the BCG just slows everything down and reduces parts wear anyway, so its a good setup. I have also yet to have a malfunction after about 200 rounds and a few setup changes so far. But it is still overgassed/under buffered, as the ejection is fairly forward instead of 3-4 oclock and you can generally feel that it is still quite pushy in rearward recoil, although a lot less of a "punchy" or "snappy" sensation against the shoulder as it was before. So, the idea is (as a defensive/tactically-minded rifle integrated into my "systems") to skip messing with adjustable gas blocks as it might just introduce a possible failure/gas leak/carbon locking issue later, and to just go with an even heavier carbine length buffer, of which i've found a few. As a side note for anyone looking at a PSA stainless .308 barrel, accuracy has ranged from acceptable (for combat) to excellent, depending on which factory load i've shot, & probably a bit of natural barrel break-in. So far: Winchester 7.62×51 NATO M80 ball has consistently shot the worst, but at 2.5" - 2" at 100 yards, it hasn't been bad, considering what it is. Its just not a consistent load and its not expected to be. IMI 7.62×51 NATO M80 ball started off shooting about 2" on average, seemingly a bit more consistent than the Winchester, but today I shot several groups that were hovering around an inch and a half at 100 yards. This is probably the ammo i'd recommend to ya'll for an SHTF stash, as it is quite affordable for AR10's, shoots pretty consistently, and it has sealed primers. I've also shot Federal Premium 168 grain .308 Sierra Matchking ammo and got a clean 1 MOA group and several that were under 1.5 inches. So it is definitely a good shooter and the PSA stainless AR10 barrels don't seem overly picky about ammo, as i've heard & been reading about for a while now from a lot of others too. Optic has been a 1-8 Primary arms SLx first focal plane. Not ideal for super tight groups but not bad either. It is definitely on the heavier end of the spectrum for AR10's though, so I went ahead and put a bipod on it too 😂 but if I do another AR10 build and I don't just get an SFAR, I do plan to use probably a Faxon gunner profile 13.9" .308 barrel (under 30 ounces?) plus the usual Aero upper/lower, and one of the 12.7" lightweight Aero handguards (if they ever come back in stock) for more of a lighter "battle rifle" application. Just a sling and a red dot or microprism 1x with a QD magnifier, so I can take that extra weight off the gun quickly if I choose to.

Another option to look at is the BRT gas tube, they have a reduced diameter opening at the gas block. They seem to be a great option for overgassed guns, better than an adjustable gas block (which requires constant maintenance to keep from carbon locking and will need regular adjustment to compensate for the restrictor screw being eroded by the gas)
