Wait a minute, so I won't be slapped in the face with a 4.5 hour PowerPoint prior to op? Oh how unfortunate! All jokes aside, this is probably one of the best ATAK tutorials out there right now. Really basic but covers the things you need to know in order to quickly start using ATAK. As a last resort you could show this video to a bunch of people, give them EUDs with ATAK and imagery installed and send them a data package of the mission

For sure, this stuff doesn't have to be super complicated all the time. Those longass pre mission briefings certainly have their place at times, but basic skills like this can certainly get a non-professional ATAK user off the ground and greatly increase capabilities

I have a question, since I'm from Europe and I can't "legally" have this software and check it myself, so maybe you can help clarify. As this is a civilian version of the software, and trust given on civ is generally low, is this software sneakily or openly logs everything you do and send it to the data centre?

The Viewshed only considers the ground elevations, like a topo map? I noticed that your OP position below the ridge had a large number of trees of unknown height. Even if they were mesquite trees six to nine feet high, seeing through them down to the target would not be feasible.

@JohnSmith-ir6bc Жыл бұрын
Your map source is likely not capable of 3D. If you turn on 3D mode and then change your angle relative to the ground, the map will likely appear as a flat plane, because it's a flat render. You need a map source that incorporates elevation data into its render. Let me know if you find one... I need one as well.

@s2underground Question about a couple of things. Now if i download the maps on a laptop(for ease of use with mouse) and create a mission like you just did on a computer, how do i send that to my phone that obviously has ATAK installed. Also when you do send the mission over, does that then download the map imagery to the phone since you downloaded it on your laptop. Or would I also have to download it onto my phone(that has atak installed). also if you wanted to say create a mission and then go do it, how would someone monitor the mission in real time? i know they would need atak installed on some sort of device but does that get sent thru the internet or is there another way of going about it with radios then send data packages. when the internet is down. Im asking beacuase id like to be able to create a mission of a hike and then have a family member monitor my progress throughout the hike(during a non SHTF scenario) AND have the capability of doing the same hing BUT in a SHTF scenario assuming the internet doesnt work. Sorry for the tons of questions. I used ATAK in the military but only was exposed to it for about a year and our combat controller or jtac would handle it usually.
@JohnSmith-ir6bc
@JohnSmith-ir6bc Жыл бұрын
You have two options: (1) Assemble and send a data package. This is the one I use. Basically, you link your devices to the same server (eg. FreeTAKServer), then select all the elements you want to share (offline maps, points, routes, etc), assemble them into a data package using the package management tool, and then send them to your device over the server by finding its callsign and sending it. (Note: DO NOT just hit "upload to server" - public servers will ban you for cluttering up the map with data you've now sent to everyone). (2) use the "ATAK Manager" extension. You're on your own for this one - all I know is you can link your mobile device and dump mission data to it directly.

Export the track from TAK into a GPX or KML, upload it to your watch rather through GConnect or through cable. Naming convention should be what the specific movement plan should be. So Primary/Secondary and so on as that is what you will see when it is exported and in your trail folder on your watch.

Good question; the short answer is radios. There is a public plugin for ATAK that allows one to send and receive data using what is essentially APRS. Obviously there's people out there who are thinking more of the anti-government insurgent operations using this software, but it actually has a ton of other uses. Hunting is a big one, but a mesh network of phones with ATAK carried by every team would be a massive boon to search and rescue operations, volunteer/professional firefighters tackling wildfires, birdwatching/wildlife photographers, I could even see this being used for SOTA or amateur astronomy. Firefighters could tag new flashups, S/R teams combing through a forest looking for a lost person could mark lines of approach and tag off once a sector has been cleared, etc.
