Atarashii Gakko is something I would never have thought I would like, but damn there is something about them, the music, the dance, the charisma. Pure entertainment. I first found them from their "Free Your Mind" vid.

The song which totally sold me on AG was Otona Blue. It was great with them and Nemophila on the same Songs of Tokyo Show. Also Suzuka is amazingly beautiful, and a smoke show without the glasses.

ATARASHII GAKKO is definitely not your average idol group. Their name actually translates to "New School", signifying that they are kinda different, they are sort of the anti-idol group. Their songs are not the cutesy bubblegum rainbow candyland you'd expect from usual idol stuff, but often odd, weird, harsh, controversial or even downright depressing. Like the song in the video "Koi Geba" is about student-teacher relationships, a very taboo subject in Japan. It happens more often than anyone would admit, teachers seducing students, but they'd rather just not talk about it. In the honor culture and harsh social hierarchy in Japan, teachers have quite a bit of power over students, they can make or break their academic careers or even their lives if they are so inclined. So when a student gets seduced or strongarmed into an illicit relationship by a teacher, they don't really have much recourse, they often end up just going with it and endure in fear of repercussions. The authorities won't lift a finger without concrete damning evidence (which there's usually none) and the school board would rather bury the whole thing, because no matter who they'd side with, even the mere allegation of such a thing happening would tarnish the school's reputation. Often many of these students end up being ruined, physically, psychologically and socially. Harassment and victim blaming by their peers, being called a slut and "teacher's fucktoy" (kids are cruel), or being swept up in drama if it all goes public. Unable to bear the torture, shame and public humiliation many of them end up committing suicide. Of course nobody is talking about this, because that's just how Japan works, take all the bad shit and sweep it under the rug, and if everyone pretends it's not there and it ceases to be a problem.

This is why Japanese music scene so interesting, their choreo are really unique, unlike anything I've seen, very weird, but very gymnastics, satisfying and eye catching. And Suzuka vocal is soo amazing - yeah another amazing Suzuka beside Su-metal whom I obsessed with

They're currently in the USA. I'll be seeing them at the Roxy in L.A. on August 18th. They're got another headlining show at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco the day before that.

Love this Group. All dancers since very, very young, all do sing, Suzuka (not the oldest!) the most unique voice. As for story in Koi Geba, the relationship in the background is "inappropriate" between student and teacher, at one point in front of a Love Hotel.

You should watch their dance practices. It's so enjoyable to watch them have fun! :D

Atarashii Gakko is like 'anti idol' because they so different..unique..with others GG but as I know J-pop have many kind of unique music not only 'kawaii' style.

I don't know that much about them since the more poppy style is typically not for me, but I have certainly enjoyed the couple of songs I have heard from them. It's one of those bands/groups that I am probably not going to listen to in my own time, but I will probably watch reaction videos to them if I see them in my subbox. I certainly have a lot of respect for what they do, those dances can't be easy to learn. As far as opening doors go, they recently have been in a caloboration video with Captain Disillusion called "Music Video VFX Magic With ATARASHII GAKKO" (I'm not going to link it since youtube will probably eat my post if I do). He is a youtuber with a couple of million subs that makes videos about video effects and things like that. It's a 20 minute video, but it was entertaining throughout. He basically made new music videos for a couple of parts of their songs. The video already has a million views, so I am sure some new people got to know about them.

I've only been watching Atarashii Gakko for the last 3-4 years & as others have said about them over the years, they are "weird" or "odd", sometimes with their choreo. Obviously, as you can see, just like Band-Maid's maid costumes, these gals use school uniforms as their theme. Sometimes I even equate their faces/looks to Band-Maid's, such as Mizyu looking like Miku. And Rin looking like Saiki. I believe that because of their uniqueness & "oddness", that could be the reason they might be trending in popularity. They are considered a small part of the rise of the Japanese invasion of the west, including Band-Maid, just like the Beatles & Stones were part of the British invasion & Blackpink & BTS are the Korean invasion.

Pretty sure Atarashii Gakko have a pretty unique dance style, not reflective of J-pop or rock. You should check Pineapple Kryptonite next, is newer and quirkier and catchy as fuck. Suzuka (tall singer) is actually not the oldest but she is the 'primary singer' in many songs. They all ooze charisma, you will see more of that in Pineapple Kryptonite or Free Your Mind. They also all sing. I am glad their new stuff shows all members more. :D

Great reaction and breakdown 👍 Saw them at Crunchyroll Expo the other week and their amazing performers. They put everything into it and you can tell they love what they do. Easily one of the best shows I've seen in a very long time.

That Suzuka doesn't have the typical J-Pop front-person look seems to be a deliberate choice. I watched a documentary today showing her performing before she was in Atarashii Gakko no Leaders. She was very reserved about showing her personality and had been made to look quite pretty as if she was an idol. I think she has a role in this group, however, to be the comedienne (which is not so apparent in such a serious song) and has actually been deliberately made to look more homely (glasses and short plain hair) to fit her comedy stylings (which very often has her making hilarious ugly faces which she can snap out of in an instant).

New School Leaders! I’ve have to admit that I might have a little crush on Suzuka 🤭 She’s so funny and I really like her voice. The band latest Tik Tok/Instagram video is hilarious 🤣 And this particular song is great, I think I like their older stuff a bit more but the new songs are good too. I just wish they have a live backing band when they’re on stage instead of a backing track

The storyline is basically the 4 members are ghosts, who were victims of their teacher (the guy in the video) and then killed, and the girl who is with the teacher is his next victim. I also think they were trying to warn her in the video but they are ghosts so she can't see them, so to sum it up its about sa by teachers and toxic student-teacher relationships I think.

Why am I just now finding this??? I’ve been into Japanese bands for a while, mostly rock/metal with some pop, these girls are crazy in the best way like Gacharic Spin and Hanabie. You should check out Pineapple Kryptonite by them.

AG are best in live performances and their early H.Zetto M collaborations are very interesting. They have been performing together since 2015 and before that they were all involved in dance, acting and performing, so their stage presence isn't surprising. For example, Mizyu (the one with the two braids) was a back up dancer for Kayary Pamyu Pamyu kids and that's performing at a high level. Personally I'd recommend 'Freaks'(either the music video or choreagraphy video on a rooftop) or 'Nainainai' (particularly 'live on a train' version) The music does vary a bit, including hip-hop influence, Warren Hue also raps in 'Freaks'. They also have some entertaining short non-music videos, like ' ATARASHII GAKKO! - Seishun Academy 101: Come To School With Us', which is also interesting just to see how things work in a Japanese school. Actually it is a bit of a negative song. AG tends to make some comment on Japanese social mores. This is about a teacher preying? on a student. At least that is the interpretation that I have heard. AJ Hartley does interpretations of a bunch of AG songs.

The entire meaning of the song is normalisation of sexual assaults in Japanese schools. It's normalised because of the "trouble"the student causes and ATARASHI GAKKO! called the group that is dancing in front of them is supposed to show the trouble,see how you mostly focus on them because of how distracting it is and not what is happening with the student

Atarashii Gakko was a great group. Until they signed and fell into the hands of an Woke American producer .. Who unfortunately makes the girls feel sensual, making sexual insinuations... In addition to affecting the quartet's musicality. Now everything is electronic. They have lost Originality.
