I feel they definitely hold up, i got my 2600+ a month ago, got all the games you showed and some old ones from ebay, then a week later, i decided to get the new vcs and got the Atari vault, vault 2, and the 50 collection on that. I have been having endless hours of fun. I like Atari for the simple arcade quality of the games. Not that i mind a complicated rpg sometimes, but every now and then i want simple and fun. Plus, i was a little kid when i first played atari, and grew up more as an NES kid, so some of the titles i never played before. Now i see what i missed out on. Been having a blast.

The manuals that came with the original games and the artwork on the boxes were usually great. You don't get the same sense of nostalgia without the actual cartridges.

It's fun for a short burst of nostalgia here and there. I think it's pretty cool overall. If you didn't grow up with an Atari 2600 then it may be a little harder to get into if you can get into it at all. You have to be really retro to fully appreciate the Atari.

I grew up with the 2600 and I have no desire to go back to playing those games. Once the the NES and SEGA Master System hit the streets, it was Atari shmary. We didn't even care about the Coleco or Intellivision after the Nintendo revolution. It was like going from the Stone Age to the Iron Age in less than 5 years.

I still love 2600 games. Nes was a big step up, but a lot were very similar action platformers. Most Atari games were pretty different and requires that you read the manual. Plus, there's nothing quite like playing a game that requires paddles.

I'm way too young to have played atari as a child. I grew up with a ps2, but that doesnt stopped me from absolutely adoring atari 2600 games. I recently purchased the 2021 VCS system primarily so i can play the Atari 50 collection with the wireless joystick controller. I also have a ton of cartridges and a few original systems that get played frequently. The 2600+ is next on my list, but for now I've been managing with a small crt to use with the old systems

As a hobbyist gamedev I find these games endlessly fascinating. I also dabbled into programming the 2600 at some point, and here's my take: what makes these games important is that the hardware that runs them is essentially a horrible piece of garbage, and you have to jump through ungodly, ridiculous hoops just to make it display anything at all. And even when you do, there's so little it can do it's a miracle that these games even exist. So when working with hardware this limited, the ONLY thing you can do is make the game so good, so much fun, so compelling that the player ignores the crude, bare bones presentation. And if you work with the hardware, not against it, you can achieve insane results with some clever trickery. Just look at Carol Shaw's River Raid. It can display a colorful, endless canyon with a variety of enemies, in buttery smooth 60 FPS and no flicker whatsoever. And it's all possible because it takes the hardware's limitations and flips them around, turning them into advantages. The same with David Crane's pitfall. These people were wizards.

Actually it didn't immediately. The NES actually came out in Japan in 83, but it wasn't until about 85 or so that the games started getting so good, Mainly due to the fact of mapper chips in the cartridges, and it was about 86 when I remember it being indispensable to not have an NES. But it's because all the software that came out and the tools for the software got really good from ten years previous.

Despite the 2600 being the first console I ever played in the 80s I've got to say that I've realllyyy got to be in just the right mood to go back and play 2600 games. There is some decent stuff there for sure but there is almost nothing that wouldn't rather play on another platform if it is possible and a lot of 2600 games are just completely incomprehensible due to the very simple graphics and limited controls. I will say though that NES forward consoles hold up pretty well. I think even just the D pad that Nintendo nailed down with the NES makes a huge difference on how playable games are. That joystick on the Atari is just rubbish in comparison (and somehow controls actually got worse with the 5200 and 7800).

I find that people just brainwash themselves into believing this and they haven't actually gone and gotten some good games and played them because if you get good games like demon attack, ms pac man, etc, And there are quite a few, You can really enjoy playing them for quite a while. I actually see the same kind of thing with the nes at this point, too, Some people don't wanna go further back than the sixteen bit games. While it's true that some of the games are limited, I would rather play any of those games and especially the good ones, Then the trash that is on the phone store that passes as a game....

Never had a 2600 myself, but some cousins did and we had home computers with similar style games in that era, so I still totally relate to this as the first type of gaming I was exposed to. I also lived through Pac-Man fever, Saturday Supercade, Donkey Kong, etc. Probably from the late 80s to the late 2000s the Atari was just too old/primitive for me, but now I totally appreciate it again. I can play the console for hours, although that generally involves swapping out games every little while. Some I can play longer than others, and getting better at some of them and building up high scores again can be a lot of fun. Some games just remain timeless and brilliant, like Asteroids, Beamrider, Pole Position, Frogger, Space Invaders and other more obscure titles. Yeah there were better/different ports sometimes for other consoles and home computers, but the Atari was the one that sold and dominated in that early time in gaming. The 2600+ is a well-executed huge nostalgia hit, but also just fun to authentically relive this type of gaming again. I have played it tons since getting it almost 2 months ago, and even seeing the sharp graphics on modern displays is kind of an upgrade. Collecting carts again is also part of the fun, and as I near about 100 of them I'm sure I've pretty much got all the good or noteworthy titles for the console and a few more rare or less well known games. The 2600+ is also a great way to explore the 7800. For whatever reason the Atari 2600 is an endlessly fascinating system with what they could squeeze out of it sometimes. When it's bad or mediocre it doesn't hold up, but when it's good it's really good. People can do what they want, but although I love my retro Nintendo and Sega and PC Engine and some modern console gaming I simply am not going to tire of or stop playing these timelessly fun games now.

Yup you get it. All these games have a place. I can go from playing A modern PS5 game to playing Demon attack. No problems. The experiences are different, but honestly, a lot of modern games suck just as bad as bad Atari games. If the game sucks, it sucks.....

The main problem nowadays is that we have access to hundreds of 2600 games but as a Gen-X gamer, I don't have the time needed to appreciate these classic games. Back in the day, you'd get maybe one game to last you three months before having enough pocket money to get another. You'd play that one game every night when you got home from school and more over the weekend with friends. You'd squeeze every bit of enjoyment you could out of it even if it wasn't the best game ever. Nowadays you can fire up your Flashback Atari Classics with 150 games to choose from play a game for a few minutes then decide to move onto another without really getting into the meat and bones of the game. Try limiting the games you play to only a couple and get good at them, then you'll really be getting the "feels" for how cool these games were back in the golden age of arcade. Great video as always and keep up the awesome work!

That's actually an advantage of the twenty six hundred plus. Instead of having a bunch of roms where you don't even bother because you just skip from one to the next on a menu, Having a game where you have to physically slot the cartridges in the old way really does give you that old school experience.

I was born 10 years after the 2600 came out so I was 5 when they discontinued the original so I have zero nostalgia for it, but I like the games, basic yes, but I find it fascinating they can even squeeze anything onto a system that only had 128bytes of RAM and a 2k ROM cartridge. You need to have realistic expectations for these games, and you’ll still have fun especially with multiplayers such as Video Olympics or Warlords.

As someone who grew up with Atari 2600 I don't see the appeal in this. The 'Enhanced' games don't seem to offer me an experience I missed. With the technology available, why does the 'Enhanced' offering need to be nothing more than a small step up from the original incapability of the hardware of the original console. Having another console, and more cartridges are a waste of space. The 'Recharged' versions of the same game could easily be run on the same console, look better, offer more challenges, but don't appear to be an offering. Why are there so many decent to good reviews about this?

Man, Demon attack, Galaxian, Moon Patrol, Space Invaders, All still great. Summer better than others in all of them are pretty short like you. Can probably just get your nostalgia in ten minutes, but they're still fun. If I have to play Atari 2600 games using an actual 2600 joystick that's when I notice how far we've come, those sticks weren't my favorites, and I probably won't make 20 minutes playing anything. So much about those days (late 70s/beginning 80s) I love because of the imagination you needed when gaming and instructions usually weren't too complicated.

Technologically, the Nes is not a generational leap over the 2600. It was released in Japan six years later and had basically the same Cpu, a bit more memory and improved audio visual. Extra chips on the carts expanded its capabilities. Pitfall 2 for the Atari had its own custom chip allowing for a much more complex game. With better management Atari could have had a 68000 based console based on the Amiga chipset in the mid 80s

NES looks lightyears better than 2600...
@provisionalhypothesis
@provisionalhypothesis 18 күн бұрын
It only does if you look at the games that came out at the end of the game console's life. If you look at the games that were released in early 83, they were not all that much better than Pitfall 2, in all honesty. And every single cart that is good for nes, it has a special chip in it. Because the console could not do it without those chips. They are called mapper chips, and pitfall 2 Was one of the first games that had this approach. The atari 2600 Was already considered obsolete by programmers around nineteen eighty three, 6 years into its lifecycle. Atari, the company, just made some bad business decisions and did not have the successor succeed. In fact the successor failed, the 5200. So they ended up losing to nintendo. The actual best console of the third generation was the sega master system, technically. But it's all about games. And they didn't have all the games, even though the games they did have were quite good. A betamax vs VHS situation. There was such technological development at the time that computers were rapidly obsoleted within 1 to 2 years of each other. I mean, if you look at what you were able to buy in 1983 and then contrast that with what was available Just 3 years later, There was a massive improvement and that continued all throughout the eighties into the nineties. it was nothing like today where you can make computers last for 10 years. Without many problems....

I was like 11 or 12 or so when the 2600 came out. I have some very fond memories of playing that system with my cousins and my friends. Sure, the games are primitive compared to the NES but man, they were just simple, dumb, fun. I've played them on emulation and still love them. I think I'll be getting a 2600+ and rebuild my old collection. Sometimes simple is just the right fit.

Gen X here and Atari 2600 is the first system I played. There are good games, River Raid, Millipede and Frogger three to start. However, I also moved onto NES and those games are still good - yes there are limitations but they hit the point that works in a way most 2600 games sadly don’t Still 2600 and Atari always has a place for me too.

I grew up with a 2600 and have a ton of nostalgia for it.... but pretty much NO desire to revisit the games. The only 2600 game I ever really play anymore is River Raid, and occassionally some other Activision titles. Nothing else really holds up for me. Some of the arcade ports are decent, but why would I play them when I can play the arcade roms?

Those games only keep my attention for about 5 minutes each- and then I'm off to a different game. NES was my childhood system, and Atari VCS is just something to tinker with to me. Our household didn't have one.

The Atari ST was the best game system they ever made. Its not so well known but it was state of the art and was as good as an Amiga. It was a personal computer but it was most well known for its games.

Not quite as good as an Amiga. Amiga had better hardware scrolling and sprite capabilities, and a better sound chip when you are comparing vanilla 520STFM and an Amiga A500. Although, the ST did have a superior clock speed for its Motorola 68000, meaning that vector graphic games ran that little bit faster or smoother. I owned both and lamented the lazy ST ports that didn’t take advantage of the increase in palette and better scrolling and sprite handling.

The simpler the better. Something like Space Invaders or Chopper Command, stuff you can just pick up and play is pretty cool... The more complicated games like Raiders of the Lost Ark are interesting but not at all fun in 2024. It's great for introducing my kids to gaming though. They're only 3 so the joystick and single button is perfect for their little brains.

Gotta understand that 2600 games are more arcade-style than anything else, and aren't meant to consume 100 hours of your time. And most of them are intended to be played with a friend.

it doesn't hold up... because the graphics sux back in the late 70's... but that's all we had to go by so it was the greatest thing. PS1 looked amazing now you go back and you're like wow lots of polygons lol But at the time when all you got is stick men and an epic cartridge art work... ET was the bee's knees :P

Seems 2600 is getting a lot of Hype, personally I'd pass on the 2600 nowadays, I played it at friend's house as a kid in the early/ mid 80's and it was fine, but now I'd struggle to enjoy the basic gameplay and zero thrills graphics I'm sure. Good that some people can revisit it though so ,..👏✌️.

I don’t think there are very many people anymore that enjoy playing games to challenge themselves to do better and get a higher score. I think this is why I see so much cheating in online games now - these kids need some sort of external validation, and too few of them understand the fun of becoming more skilled at something.
