Thanks! I edited the River Raid part out actually. I didn't check the files thoroughly before burning the EPROM and River Raid turned out to be a (badly) hacked version that was not much fun at all... In the meantime, I made another EPROM with all the right versions of the games and I love it. :)

@@JanBeta yes I am, I also had a idea. What if you used the Ben Eater "Build an Arduino EEPROM programmer" to read bin files from a SD card and write to the EEprom. Add a simple screen and you could pick what to program and then play.

Thanks! I did cover the window after filming. I had to reprogram the EPROM again because some of the games I put on there were NTSC versions and/or hacked ones. Now it's all good and I put a piece of electrical tape over the window. :)

I thought about that, too, but wanted to keep it as simple as possible for now. Definitely going to play around with that idea some time. You would ideally have to reset the cartridge and the console at the same time I think.

I think I had an older version of this console.

There are a couple of different versions. The older ones had a bigger case with proper switches. There are different boards, too, but they are all fully compatible afaik.

I did the very simplest of composite mods a while back using just a resistor ladder and a small decoupling cap. Works pretty well so far especially on my CRT. I did a video on it, too (which is a bit confusing because I tried 2 mods one of which didn't work at all... It's one of my all time favorite games overall, I think. I played the C64 version extensively as a kid and was stunned when the VCS version looked and played nearly exactly the same. Awesome game, genius code by Carol Shaw! :)

Thanks! I did a composite mod on this 2600 a while back (also did a video but it's rather confusing because I tried two methods and one of them failed to work). I did the very simplest composite mod in the end that is just a resistor ladder adding up the different signals for composite (I think it's the same mod that Ben Heck usually does). It works pretty nicely for what it is. Don't know if an s-video mod would improve things even further. Would be interesting to try sometime.

You are correct, you can just put 16 2K games on an EPROM without any modifications to the cartridge.

Gonna buy another 32 in 1 and mod for 4k :) although first i need to understand why my atari 2600jr rev f is going crazy on colors with originsl 32 in 1 pal cartridge. Thanks! Glad it works for you. I think you could achieve 8k games using some extra logic. If I remember correctly, bank switching differs for different games so you need different logic for some. I think there's some discussion about that in the forum thread I "stole" this mod from (linked in the description).

I think you could dissolve the copper trace with some chemicals but find the knife method totally sufficient (and probably healthier).

xbox 360 found at local thrift store...I paid $30.00, No cords. I wanted to use cables from my first Xbox 360 but.. different socket. I will take pictures and email you. I looked a few months back into modding it, the tools needed are expensive if only doing one Xbox. Next problem is Xbox games are big, I have to look in bookmarks for FTP locations. I had plans to use a 1tb external drive for just 360 warez. I have 1/2 a dozen PS2 in storage, I wanted to mod one or two and download the full rom collection... I start looking for the games and realize downloading the full collection would take (I have to look again, but its TB drive space needed)... PS2 file sizes are massive and would take months to download on a good connection. This is another factor c64 and Atari 2600 are still popular, all games fit on one disk. Idea.. You download A-M, I will do N-Z and then do a local copy and mail it. cuts time in half. I will take pictures this weekend.

I'm using one of those Chinese EPROM eraser things from eBay. I did some modifications before I dared using it, though. Changed the power chord and some of the wiring inside (because it was VERY flimsy). I'm probably going to put in a fuse some time, too. Despite the lack of safety it works pretty well for me.

I have one of those, too (see my previous answer). They are pretty cheaply made (obviously) but work okay. I modded mine a bit to be at least a little safer.

I haven't tried erasing EPROM with it yet, but i have an olde Philips face tanning desk lamp. I bought it used 20 years ago for maybe 20 DM or 50 DM? It still works, didn't need tube replacement at all, which should tell you how much artificial tan my face is getting. I guess the LCD monitor backlight is all i need for that particular purpose. It sure seems punchy enough to erase some EPROMs though, it does cure LOCA glue and UV-reactive fingernail varnish. Apropos fingernail varnish, you know you can get a UV fingernail varnish curing device for cheap, and you likely don't need to ship it across the planet? Some of them sit just the right way to erase some EPROMs and are equipped with a bunch of like G23 9W UV CCFLs, you will find if you search for 36W version. Reports of reliability aren't too good, but that's what everyone uses in phone repair to cure screen glue.

I heard some people use those nail polish UV lamps (even battery ones) on UV EPROMS as well. Seems to work fine but take a bit more time (with my Chinese device, most EPROMS take around 20 mins to erase and you can do 6-7 at a time).

You can use an electronically erasable EPROM and reprogram it with other games. There’s no way to replace individual games unfortunately, you always have to reprogram the whole thing.

Thanks! I made some bank switchable C64 cartridges. Only tried two banks with a physical switch as of yet though. Would be interesting to implement a similar counter circuit into that. And yes, I would enjoy it I guess. It's way above my skills but I'd enjoy learning how to do it, too. Am I strange? ;)

The problem with the C64GS apparently is that a bunch of cartridge games did not work on it and they only worked on the c64-breadbin (as in the normal c64). So, it would be cool to see homebrew games come out for that like the atari ones in the metaljesusrocks videos where he says they have a chip in them to help beef up processing. -> Not sure about strange, but more like "ST Range (of atari computers)"... That was a pun btw. :D I wonder who could make a video toaster (which if you google them were, in the mid range about 150mhz with 64meg ram). I see the exxosuk and TerribleFire channels make accelerators (sometimes ASIC, others fpga) but I reckon they haven't the time, and Brek Martin also does great videos on CD32 FMV cartridge repair. Other pepole with that kind of HDL-and-FFT knowledge would be Ben Heck and Jeri Elsworth (in particular, Jeri what with her knowledge of Fourier Analysis, thereby she'd get her head around Discrete Cosine Transform, Cooley Tukey and Butterlfy Algorithm Bit-Twiddling. In her videos she has had video chats with very smart people. Alas no youtube activity of late. Just an idea: If you ever wished to put the word out in a video as a mere mention (only if you want to) that this open source Video Toaster (HAMbrew) should be a thing and thereby invented and made (and have CDROM games written for it, maybe requiring 8meg or more and 68030 or higher), it would maybe get picked up as an idea somehow by a person. My channel hasn't much on it, but if it helps, feel free to stay tuned to it.

That's quite a project. I'm going to mention it in one of the next Amiga videos if I remember to do so. Maybe someone has an idea on how to pull this off. Would be great to have something like a new video toaster and software using it made by the community. :)

The video toaster was available for a2000 and a3000 and a4000 in various models using zorro slots and pci slots. Am I right in thinking that "some" (maybe "all") of those models would boot with no 'need' for a hard drive (although a harddrive is for recording video to and using lightwave that came with it). Am I right in thinking one could boot from a standard workbench floppy (or toaster floopy), and then maybe just further floppies after that for the toaster? I just mean bare minumum (rather than the "ideal" usage via HDD). If that is true then surely that makes the toaster a very power graphics card for homebrew because it would not require any of these "new" Amiga OS operating systems and in fact could just use workbench 1.3 or 2.0 and actually even if it did need a HDD install, it would still be using old workbench 1.3 and workbench 2.0 etc. What's more, it works with the old 1.3 kickstart ROM. While it maybe be possible that newtek modified their own kickstart by aggreemnt with commodore (even though they released their software as FOSS when amiga went under), it still means the toaster is for "Real Amigas" (as purists say when complaining about the frankenstein a1200 machines that exist nowdays, kitted out in tower cases). See what I mean? If somebody could reverse engineer aToaster or rather make their own totlly compatible HAMbrew card that worked with the newtek FOSS, one could get a homebrew toaster going on a normal amiga so you can plug it in and then out again as if nothing had ever happened (so it is reversible) The aim of having a toaster is that people (rightly IMO) complain that one has to do terrible things to one's amiga (install pic slots and scary motherboard stuff) to get some graphics card (like a v00d003 or whatever) running and you need software like warp3D or similar. I know you and I would have the cnfidence to modify an amiga for Warp3D and so on, however, newcomers rightly do not want to. And they should not have to. maybe you can see where I am going with this. The purists are right and the Toster solves all of this (either by finding a real one from the old days or making one).. >:D

It should theoretically be possible to do just that. I don't know exactly about what drivers etc you would need to make use of the video toaster card but it would absolutely work from floppies, too. As far as I know, you could also build an adapter for the A500 and the other smaller Amigas. The architecture for the Zorro slots (these cards went in) is all there, they are just missing the connectors. It's an interesting idea I'd say. :)

The 2600 actually has a built-in reset switch already. :)

well, that's not really a Reset Switch like what we usually think of using that term. Because it's a fully programmable switch which does whatever it has been programmed to do, and usually it does not reset the system at all, just (re)starts a game. so it's more akin to a "START" button on later consoles, than to a "Reset Switch" like on the C64 or even later on IBM PCs (when they still had Reset Switches...).

That's one of those superfluous special keys on the PC keyboards, isn't it? No such thing on the Apple keyboard. We usually use CMD+left arrow but it didn't work in the virtual machine. ;)

I run it in VirtualBox on OSX. I rarely use it but the EPROM programmer's software is Windows only.

I kind of still like this version even if it's crappy.
