A North American T6 Texan crashed in lake Winnebago just northeast of runway 27 at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Time was 9:05AM 29 July 2023. You can see the ADS-B data here of theT6, N49961 over the lake dropping off as it descended rapidly from approximately 3900 feet. A De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Mk.I Beaver, N22KK saw the accident and flew over the area. This is the ATC communication between N22KK and Oshkosh tower. The footage is crude as it was filmed while and close to when it happened. The second half of the video was live & the first half just a few minutes before. See more information in the links below. I will update here in the notes or in a video as further info comes to light. We delayed posting this video until official reports were released, Godspeed.

I was hoestly half asleep on the couch with the live ADSB feed on the TV when I heard 2KK say a plane went into the water. I just got up and recorded it off the TV. Horrible tragedy, ive flown into to EAA Airventure 10 plus times with my Dad over the years so you really hate to hear about these accidents.

On flywire he said it appeared she was doing manuevers prior. He did a video about stalls and prevention from inside a T6. Apparently 10,000 feet is the safest altitude to recover in a T6. Also him and other experienced pilots said it has pretty nasty stall charteristics and takes 2 1/2 rotations before it will recover thats why not many people spin them. Witnesses said it went in a full developed spin with no recovery attempt. So I assume the startle factor with no experience played a factor plus at her altitude she basically only had one safe attempt to recover.
@thatstinsongirl
@thatstinsongirl 11 ай бұрын
The T-6 is actually supposed to be placarded “intentional spins prohibited” if you look at the TCDS, presumably due to its recovery characteristics (I think the FAA requires a 1.5 turn recovery?) so if it caught her by surprise (stalling out of a loop maybe?) she may very well not have had time to recover, and even if she had all of the correct inputs in, may not have had the altitude to recover.
@Darkvirgo88xx
@Darkvirgo88xx 11 ай бұрын
@@thatstinsongirl Yes thank you for adding that part I couldnt remember what else it was. The T-6 is not approved for spins by the FAA. It doesnt meet the recovery standards. Even in a plane approved for spins the begging phases and first spin doesnt count. So in a T-6 your going to have to take the ride before you can recover and it has to be done correctly. You maye be right I forgot she was well below the safe recovery altitude. 6,000ft is acceptable for a experienced pilot I believe the video I watched said. But during training in the war they spun them at no lower then 10,000ft and apparently there were more casualitys in training then in war due to that. I dont think she knew what do to do. Witnesses said she didnt even attempt to recover she let it fuly develop because spins arent really taught in pilot training now. They reccomend spin prevention.

@@Darkvirgo88xx Yep, if it caught her by surprise (which is my assumption) and she didn’t recover immediately, she may well not have had altitude to recover, regardless of how much training she had. Anyone commenting that she should’ve had spin training in the T6 needs to realize that it is not legal to do so in the US, based on the FAA restrictions. Spin training is great, and I think it should still be mandatory for PPL in the US (spin training has helped me out a couple of times), but I have been told by several T6 pilots that if you don’t recover in the first turn and a half in a T6, that you just have to put the inputs in and wait, and hope you have enough altitude to recover. We don’t know if she tried to recover, we don’t know how long it took to recover, and we don’t know if she and her passenger were in the process of trying to bail out. There’s also always the possibility that something else went wrong; it was an unrestored airframe. We won’t know until the final report comes out, if they even come to a conclusion. I am assuming that it will be something along the lines of “pilot error due to failing to recover from a spin that occurred for unknown reasons”, so we may never get a real answer as to why it happened.
@Darkvirgo88xx
@Darkvirgo88xx 11 ай бұрын
@@thatstinsongirl Thats what I understood too. But it is not FAA approved for spins and the spin recovery the FAA approves doesn't even count the beginning and first few spins so it must be a handful. I may be wrong but also the Cirrus planes with the parachutes that is really for it to pass approval because its also nasty in spin situations but it can be used in other emergency situations. They basically use that as a marketing technique in my opinion that's why people crash them also.

Dan Gryder did an excellent analysis of this tragic incident. In summary, too much plane, not enough experience! I'm not always a fan, but he got it right on this one!
@maxtanicfilms
@maxtanicfilms Жыл бұрын
Yeah he gets to the point and as much as he can be tough it only helps pilots. I flew a T6 when I was 12 with our nieghbor and that is a very heavy airplane on the controls. I was used to our 1955 Cessna 310 which folks consider a bit heavy on the controls and it was like a sports car in comparison. The main thing I remember is doing a turn and Andy saying "You have to stand on that rudder Jeffrey and get the stick over twice as far as your doing!". In no way is an airplane like that easy. Even though it's a trainer it's the step just before an airplane like a P51 for a reason. It will be interesting to see what comes from the NTSB, so sad. Thanks for commenting.

@@ericmiller4285 actually Dan was correct that the CFI in the Cub would likely have survived if she was wearing a shoulder harness and yes, a low altitude turn back, for the simulated engine failure was a mistake. Truth hurts, but Dan is passing on insightful advice to learn from and avoid other pilot's unfortunate mistakes or circumstances.

@@ericmiller4285 Dan's analysis of the Piper Cub accident with the female pilot was SPOT ON. When will the industry start ignoring POLITICS and STOP ALLOWING these low-time female pilots at the controls of complex / tailwheel aircraft? That's the real issue here. Are CFIs just going to keep signing off female pilots because they think they're "cute?" Or because the female pilot knows how to "play the game" when she struggles on the flight controls or with her decision-making abilities? But noooo, we can't discuss what REALLY matters here.
