I’m currently a vet tech student, to all of the “They aren’t sedated” comments, we are taught in school that we do not need to use sedation for this procedure. In clinic, we do not use sedation. There is no need for it.

We do not sedate for this. They almost never react or flinch or anything.

Does doing this type of procedure, does the cat /dog feel pain?

@@danabrubaker1717 Obviously xd. But a little bit of pain is less damaging for them than sedation.

I learned with sedated animals but I think there probably isn't a need for it unless they are very agitated or getting a sedated procedure done.

I haven't practice in years (more than 10 years), but as former vet surgeon I would not risk this procedure without Iso or zoletil (maybe there are newer protocols I am not aware of). Fair play to you. It takes a lot of practice and dexterity to perform a cystocentesis. You were quick and precise, causing minimal distress to the cat. Well done :)

Cystos never need sedation. I perform them constantly all day and never had to sedate. I always do ultrasound guided but there are very few animals I cannot get a cysto on and that’s usually because they can’t breathe on their back or are too wiggly and it’s a risk to poke into the abdomen. But yeah they barely even feel or react to the initial poke. I’d dare to say it’s a painless procedure

@@benjaminshiffman8734 Thanks for your reply. This is interesting. As they say, if you don't use it, you lose it. I forgot so many things I've learned :(

@@michigan1085 it’s not a stretch at all actually. ~90+ animals don’t even move or flinch. It’s also a 22g needle which is fairly small as needles go. Are you at a vet practice or just guessing

My little boy goes in today and I’m horrified. He has been peeing so I know his bladder may be smaller and may need an ultra sound but I still get nervous. How commonly is this procedure done ?

Literally 3-4 times a day, I’m the only one that can really do ultrasound guided cystos at my work and I did 7 today, single poke each time. No pain no discomfort. Most of the time they don’t even move. It’s a very common procedure done. If you have a good vet/ technician it take less than a minute to locate and poke the bladder very accurately

my cat had this done at the vet, without explaining it to me, cost $70 they took him in the exam room and told me to wait up front, he's been very upset, sad, anxious all day, this never happened before, obviously traumatized.

That’s almost surely from being at the vet office and being in a scary unfamiliar place and not the cystocentesis. They don’t even feel it.. I would know I’ve done thousands

They don’t really feel the needle. I do them constantly and they never flinch or act hurt in any way. It is not something that warrants pain meds. It’s like them giving you pain meds for a vaccine with a 25g needle which you can barely feel

My cats have had cystocentesis *without* ultrasound guidance every 6 months for the last 6 years (a dozen times per cat) without any issue. This is just another way for vets to gouge their clients.

Pam Blair yes it’s possible to do a cystocentesis without ultrasound; however, it is great to have the ultrasound because you can see the whole abdomen if there is other presenting issues. We had to do a cysto the other day and when looking for the bladder we noticed the abdomen was filled with fluid. So that helped us with the overall case and there has been other patients where we noticed further presenting issues.

While in some practices they may do this, there are many reason where the ultrasound may come in handy or is necessary.. Also if the cat is stressed as this one in the video, it is helpful to be able to see where you are going, getting it right the first time and causing the least amount of trauma possible while being as fast and efficient as you can.. ultrasound is also very useful for seeing surrounding organs. You have to think about why the cat is in the clinic and what signs its showing and what the ultrasound could be useful for to pick up on other issues rather than thinking this cat is just in for a urine sample. From working in a clinic, i can assure you that we dont just muzzle a cat and hold it down and withdraw urine with ultrasound for the fun of it ;)

Sure it might bring up other issues, but if you are just bringing the cat in for routine urinalysis and/or UPC to monitor their chronic kidney disease, it isn't needed just for that. Some vets I was looking into use it even for these routine checks and charge considerably more than without ultrasound guidance.
@TCE1123
@TCE1123 6 жыл бұрын
I gave the reason for the routine checks: CKD. There is no reason to worry about other issues and pay more than necessary when there are no symptoms, you know why you are getting the urine draw, they have sufficiently full bladders, and there hasn't been an issue yet without ultrasounds. Why not read an entire comment?
