The top sleeve traditionally is mitered at the hem. It looks cleaner, and doesn't require the handstitch shown here

Agreed this is outdated and is taking way too long. This way too the raw sides of the buttons will be showing on the sleeve lining side.

Lay a piece of thin fabric on it . A shirt fabric is much better.
