I’m may know why the P42’s plow keeps coming off. It may be getting to low and your frogs on the points are hitting the plow. So, what I would do is, if it falls off again, maybe try glueing it a little higher up on the part it holds on to.

It’s most likely a Athearn Blue Box unit painted in the VIA colours
@animalyze71203 жыл бұрын
Bluebox doesn't designate anything other than when it was made really, all Athearns pretty much use the same design till this day.

More Of A Rebuild I'd Say, Restoration is when you take a dead locomotive and bring it back to life and give it repairs it needs to move again.More of a repair.

Very late reply but the problem with your wheel was the gear itself. It's cracked thus the half-shaft slides in and out easily, thankfully a 7 dollar gear set (Comes with 6 of them) Will fix this problem. You will need to make sure the wheels are in Gauge with an NMRA tool. This is the first thing I check getting any Athearn and is easily testable before a purchase. Turn each wheel by hand, if it turns the shaft gears are cracked and spreading allowing the shafts to free spin, however this could also indicate the wurm gear is broken or missing as well which is easily checked by removing the shell (If the wurm gear is good and installed correctly you won't be able to turn the wheels by hand thus if they do spin the shaft gear is the culprit). 99% of all Athearns I get or repair have this same issue so I always have bags of these gears in my tool drawer. Gluing works but really isn't a worthy fix just get the gears, most train places will sell these and even though they say for SD-45-2 on the package it's the same shaft gear for all Athearns. The easiest but a tad pricier fix is get a new set of 6 wheel and gear & bearing packs already gauged and assembled but that runs about 22 dollars but is less of a hassle, aside from the new ones are proper scale and 40" wheels whereas the originals were most likely 42" meaning they will work just need to readjust your couplers on the Engine afterwards. P.S Anytime you have to mess with the wheel shafts you must check to make sure the wheel set is in Gauge or you will run into decoupling, derailing, clicky noisy running and a host of other issues, plus it beats the snot out of the transmission gears in the long run and you'll be back to square 1 ;)

Nice, we have 2 of these now, absolutely in love with them, I need to get more confident with installing LED’s for more prototypical operation etc. But have the same issue with our shells, the steps break off so easily...which makes me sad.

Looks like your shell is missing the steps, antenna, and wipers. Is the main square headlight lens still there ? Athearn uses spit instead of glue for most detail parts. Looks like a decent decoder install. I put a TCS Wow Sound 9 pin in mine and left the factory bulbs and dcc board.

I have a question for you. I have a dummy engine and want to place Metal wheels on it, what type of wheel sets should I buy for it?
@SMTMainline5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what make/ type of locomotive it is, the best way to get some metal wheels for it is probably to find a motorized locomotive for scrap and steal the wheels off of it.

Hey scrump I don’t mean to be mean but in most of your titles of your videos it says Restoration but it’s not technically a Restoration it’s more of a service and relubrication. Sorry to bug you it was just confusing me. If you don’t want to change it it’s your decision. I was just thinking if other people were confused to. To me it’s not really an issue I was more referring to your views even if they cared. Hope you have a good night.
@SMTMainline5 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're right, but the way I see it, is that I took something that wasn't working and "restored" it to working order. Although I get your point.
