Athens shock me, honestly. It's one of my favourite cities in the world, but there are things that tourists don't see here.
Greece travel was not what I expected, and it truly changed my views.
It’s dangerous Athens neighbourhoods, refugee crisis, illegal migrants and drug usage on the most central streets of the city.
Meters away from the hipster Monastiraki district streets where families of tourists walk in awe after enjoying a tasty meal in a friendly place on their way to Acropolis.
What's wrong with Athens? Is Greece dangerous? Will it become better?
I had to find answers and went to the most dangerous Athens district to find out.
I film documentaries about the world's most forgotten places and cultural differences:

The Hellenic people came as refugees to Europe after the fall of Constantinople....they are not Europeans. Then the British created the country of 'greece' in 1832 Lord Palmerston, because they needed naval bases in the Agean. Following even more they divided Macedonia and gave its capital Solun to 'greece'. All fake history, Roman ruins relabelled as 'greek'.

this is because some laws in greece don't exist in america. for example, being naked in america won't necesarilly get you a criminal status, but in greece, it's highly likely you will. taking drugs is a big no no in greece and apparently the reason this is happening in los angeles is because simply people are rich and they can get away with crimes. the center of athens doesn't even have wealthy people, if you wanna see something equivalent to this, you have to go to the utter suburbs which again won't reach american level but i'm just saying. athens is generally bad to end with.

The title and approach of the video is unreal .It has targeted shots. In every big city you will find such places . We do not hide them in the back cities for the eyes of tourism like Istanbul for example .Its true that in the center of Athens you will see such contrasts (from a glorious history to the social contradictions).it is true that it has several homeless people .But Athens Attica is an unlimited place with many places to see !Also the entertainment options are innumerable 24h/day .Unlimited options to enjoy everything you desire everywhere when in other cities everything is dead after 21:00 .Also 15 minutes from the center its the seaside where is amazing .An example of Rome that is a dream city but after 21:00 you go to sleep .PS. Describing Athens with targeted photos of homeless people and a drug addict you meet on the street shows prejudice .Next time i hope you have more days to see and be more well-read .

I went to Athens three weeks ago. It’s full of graffiti, granted….but we’re planning on going back in may..why? Because it’s one of the safest, nicest cities you’ll ever visit. The people are friendly, generous, full of history, and some of the best restaurants you’ll ever eat at. We went for a late night walk and ended up in the red-light district, then the homeless district, then back to our hotel, late at night, and it was safe as houses. This video is a massive overreaction. Go there, you won’t be disappointed.

agreed. first of all foreigners simply don't know how athens is because what they are presented with is a "city of sights" with the highlights being the Parthenon and the ancient agora, monastiraki, plaka, any beach etc. and that's it. and because they don't know, that video is the average hater of athens in a very wrongful way. I am a hater of athens and I have many points to let out, say let's start with organization, the dirty streets, the cracked sidewalks and the inexistent green areas. and it goes on.

I read a comment that this lady is Ukrainian... Generally, Greece has been sympathetic to the Ukrainians since the unfortunate events and welcomed many Ukrainians seeking refuge, some Greeks and Ukrainians respect each other with a degree of unity on some common cultural elements, others don’t. What kind of Egyptian is that man talking about Egyptian, Iranian, Syrian falafel... Iranians are the least likely to be presenting falafel out of all of them... what she says about middle eastern food being what you’ll find in Athens and not Greek food is a lie, though, in the spectrum of ‘proper’ classic Greek food inclusive of the original Athens vendors there are some related foods to both the European and Middle Eastern Mediterranean neighbours to the Greeks alike. I have less mercy for this woman if she is Ukrainian than most Ukrainians no doubt deserve right now, as she presented Athens like that, she disrespected Greeks. She has been misled by somebody by inferring that mostly non Greeks were the backbone of Athens in the 60s etc and even if there was a small element of foreign workers probably working in quite poor conditions in which they deserve recognition, some of her Ukrainian compatriots are now getting a taste of a country that is housing needy foreigners in Greece itself, not entirely out of line to the reason there was any means for her to make such a propaganda natured video in the first place. Not ignoring that Greeks themselves have been needy foreigners in many places, they truly are a highly outward migrated people themselves.

I've lived in Athens for most of my life, and the worst problems are : 1. Cost of living. House and elecricity prices have surged over the last few years, while salaries are extremely low and unemployment rates are also quite high. 2. The uglyness. The city is filled with ugly concrete appartment buildings and green spots are difficult to find. Of course, there are nice corners here and there, plus some areas of the city are greener , cleaner and not so crammed as others (mostly the posh suburbs). On the positive side, as a home of approx. 4 million people, it's a city that never sleeps, it has a bustling night scene and it's easier to find a neighborhood that suits your tastes.

Been working with tourists last 12 years, seen so many ,but only russians and ukrainians suprised me so much everytime. Most of the times they are renting good but at the same time cheap hotels ,usually in areas like metaxourgeio and omonoia, bad and notorious areas. Most of the times they buy a hop on/off ticket bus ,they do a tour in athens line and in the end of the day all the speak about is that acropolis is a pale of rocks, athens has many junkies and concrete building and that is not clean. Dear ex soviet friends, people of western world have travelled more than you do and they simply can understand that when you travel into a big city, you gonna see many diversities. My sincere advice, please visit mostly the turkish resorts like you do and avoid Athens.

The reason is: This country sends away people that study at universities overseas, because they dont find fullfilling jobs. Government gets elected by people who work in public sector that keep voting same people. This alone does not give space for things to become better. All greek industries are sold to foreign industries. Loans for Greece r taken to keep these public sector families a reasurance that their kids also will find jobs in the public sector. U can do the math from there. Keep in mind the sengen treaty. All imigrants must stay in the insertion country. (Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal) . Also Turkey sends freely all imigrants in Greece. No quality, unfortunately.

Graffiti are the meaningful symbol of a very specific time period, they are rich in their meaning. A form of art and expression. They aren't ugly nor synonymous of a danger. Same for abandoned / in bad shape buidings. They carry the weight of contemporary History. They have a soul, a story to tell. All this is part of Athens, of its identity and of its uniqueness. If you don't understand that then you can't like Athens. Athens is a big Mediterranean city. It's noisy, eclectic, sometimes dirty... but most of all: alive. In all its complexity.

What a surprise. Like every big city in the western world when refuges and undocumented immigrants enter they are forced to live in poor urban areas. It just shows that these people are taking the chance to to a country in the west where there is a chance for upward mobility. Something that is not possible in Russia or other communist countries for foreigners without connections. Which is why we don't see people lining up on the boarders to enter Russia. Athens is a great city to visit; so when doing so don't do the cheep route and stay at a 2 euro BNB. You get what you pay for.

Btw. this strange attachment to order and “cleanness” is typical for eastern, post-soviet mentality. I remember how shocking it was to see how clean Minsk is, with no police on the streets because everyone is already her/his own self-officer, people silencing their voice while being asked on politics. Why? Because every citizen is so repressed and self-controlled that would never think of throwing a cigarette on the street. Same goes to Moscow and Petersburg.

Your last sentence said it all. I'm from Athens and it wasn't like that 20 years ago. Now it's a hardcore city. A unique place which if you are a really opened minded person can love it even with its problems. Isn't a city for everyone. And when I was younger I used to hate it so much. Now I can appreciate what can offers me and it changed my mentality for some things. Is a city that doesn't look like any other. A weird mixture of West and East. A mixture of fancy and expensive life with beautiful spots and good living and in the other hand a city with so many problems. Its like two different worlds in some block distance. And only if you a true explorer like you said you can appreciate what it can offers you....

Anyone that happen to read this dont let yourself for a second believe or think any human bring born in the country he or she loves, would like smth like this to happen, its not just about racism, this is upcoming war, a fight for land this is serious and those hippie oriented ppl need to wake up and realize natives dont like or want to raise their children in a dirt like this.

Yes, you are correct! The refugee crisis has affected everything in Athens/Omonia. Greece being in the EU, they are obligated to host these refugees (EU law says the first country of entry is where refugees must be processed). Yep, Athens is amazing, but there is NO doubt that the scene is tragically messed up and NOTHING like it was several decades ago, when it was relatively safe to stroll through.

yes exactly. i'm not a racist and neither a nationalist, but with athens super bad organization, they have nowhere to put those refugees other than them construct illegal houses in northwest athens. in my opinion they should demolish those favelas seen in archarnes and solve this problem already.

True, in the 90's our city was the most beautiful and safe city in Europe for a night walk even at the worst neighborhoods.. Last decades our country turned to a camp from people all over the world without people's approval.. Noone has ever voted a government that wanted to turn our country into a multicultural one. Especially in such an aggressive way Greeks are living the country and their place is being taken by unknown refugees without papers and outlaws.. Very interesting example is the police announcement when someone is being caught.. Name.: A or B or C or D Born.: 1/1/1998 or 1/1/2000 or 1/1/2002 Birthplace.: Iran or Pakistan or Afghanistan Father's name.: A or B or C or D Ενα μπορ...λο και μισό

9:29 - When you talk about the exact line you aren't kidding. I remember crossing that street and it was like night and day. I crossed Sarri Street to see what Koumoundourou Park was since it was about four blocks from the main area and I was curious what it was after seeing it on the map every time I pulled my GPS up. It's pretty shocking how all the bars and festive restaurants disappear. I turned around right away and came back. I was curious if the bad element are afraid to cross Sarri Street as well as I imagine the locals and cops probably don't welcome them in their neighborhood either.

@@RealPartyHat you haven't seen the bad side of athens and it's natural because that's how greeks present it to the rest of world. athens is generally a bad city and it would rank even lower if it weren't for the archeological sites. for the american equivalent i'm saying that it's even worse than new york and detroit, there's perhaps no worse organization anywhere else in europe. i've been living here for most of the time and when i had the chance to live in the countryside for a moment, that's when i realized that it's only fun if you're a tourist and that's what happened to me when i'd go on small trips to athens before i moved back permanently.

To me that shows that you really don't know much about Athens or Greece. They have Hollywood, right? Yeah that's what people know. What is not advertised, is Skid Row and 60.000 people homeless. Blocks by blocks with people living in tents on the sidewalk, and up to recently, on famous Venice Beach. *Yes your right, Moscow is so much better. With all the love from Putin... All that said. If you are able to fix this issue in Athens, I'll personally chake your hand and say Thank You. My dear...About poverty and immigrants in Athens , you forgot that greeks fed Russian women and Albanias when they began to come here with one shoe, or you forgot that women sold their body in Russia before 1992 for a plate of food in Russia? Talking about immigrants and by saying why someone to go to Athens you forgets that Greek men spend their money 💰 and huge fortune for Russian women that lived in poverty in Russia and still sharing houses with old people for the rent and are now are on top . By saying don' t go to Athens to tourists how the Russian women will survive in Greece that offers them the best offer of jobs when they work in tourism ?They are thousands of them in Athens and and all over in Greece. By immigrants , unfortunately now because of war the poverty comes to Russia again and i hope not to be so bad like before 1992 that no body had an idea what is a hamburger 🍔 and what planet is Europe and America.
