Atlanta’s Hartfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) is a major air travel hub. Many trips involve connecting flights through ATL. With regards to Domestic (in the U.S.A.) flights, the process of moving from gate to gate within different concourses at ATL is simple and straightforward. This video will illustrate how easy by showing a walkthrough of changing from a gate in Concourse D to a different gate in Concourse A.

Here is a link for an even better (in my opinion) video showing a complete connection at ATL - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q913ZNCXuceWfKM.htmlsi=GdcPPOpHOXAU8I9h This video is done in realtime and displays a timer to get an idea of how long the connection will take. I hope you have a great trip!

6:00 When I was a kid and the Plane Train still had the scary robot voice, I was convinced all the warning signs and flashing red lights were there because the train doors would literally squish people if they got in the way. Like, it just made sense to seven-year-old me that every day, a few corporate middle managers flying to meet a client would just get chopped in half, and everyone just understood that's how it worked.

I miss that robotic voice! I mean it will sound out-dated now but in the 80s, that was state of the art! I believe they changed it in 1996 before the '96 Olympics came to Atlanta.

Having never flown I have wondered what happens in the airport. I live in Georgia and would use ATL airport if I were to fly. Your video's have been very informative and cured me of my fear of the airport. Not sure if driving to Tampa Florida or flying is faster. I live in the north west corner of Georgia & getting to ATL is about an hour & half driving time. Then allowing time for checking in, TSA, getting on the plane it may be quicker to drive. LOL Not really. I certainly see why people try to get everything into a carry on rather than check a bag. I have been watching video's on tips for packing. I don't think I would want to check a bag if I could keep from it. Thanks for the great video's.

My first experience with Atlanta airport was so scary and chaotic. I will avoid getting an Atlanta layover after that one time lol. I arrived to Atlanta at 845 at the bottom of the airport on one far end. Had to walk towards to escalators that took me upstairs and I had no idea how far it was. My connecting flight would be boarding at 9am so I freaked out thinking I would miss it. After I exited the escalator I had to find the train, luckily an airport employee helped me. After I got on the train I still had a long walk towards the end of the hall but glad I made it to the gate just in time. Although Atlanta was scary, the staff was great!

Hi Brian, your video is really helpful, especially for the ATL first timer! One question though, my flight coming from abroad and I'll have connection to ORD (both using Delta, in one reservation), do I need to reclaim my baggage after landed in ATL? or is it checked-through all the way to ORD? I will ask the gate agent of course, but I'd love to hear the real experience about this baggage situation... thank you!
@bozy106
@bozy106 3 жыл бұрын
Since your incoming flight to ATL is considered an international flight, when you land you will go through Customs/Immigration, regardless if your final destination is ATL or if you have a connecting flight. Immediately after exiting Customs you will enter the International Baggage Claim, there is no way to miss this because it is the only direction you can walk in after Customs. At International Baggage Claim you will pick up your checked bag (even if only for a minute). To exit International Baggage Claim you will have to go through a set of doors. Above these doors you will see a sign that says “Connecting Connecting Baggage & Flights” with an arrow pointing to the left. There is also a sign over the doors that says “All Atlanta Final Destination / Exit” with an arrow pointing to the right. Obviously, your situation will require you to go to the left after going through the doors. After going left, you will be able to drop your baggage for your connecting flight and will have access to the Plane Train to go to whichever Concourse your flight to ORD will depart from. I posted a video last winter that showed arriving from an international flight, going through international baggage claim and then walking through these doors I am talking about. Although in my case I went to the right because my final destination was ATL, on the video as I am going through the doors you can actually see the Delta baggage drop for connecting flights to the left. This is the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJdzgMaoma2-h4U.html Also thanks for the comment!

@@ElKazzam1 if the two connecting flights were with the same airline and booked on the same reservation your baggage would be "checked through" to your final destination (in this case Mexico City.) However it is a little different if you are arriving at Atlanta from an international destination, in which case you would pick up your bags in Atlanta and then just a short walk away recheck them for your connecting domestic (in the US) flight.

If your origin is in the U.S. and your final destination is also in the U.S. your luggage should be forwarded or “checked-thru” to your final destination as long as both of your flights were on one reservation with the airline. This saves the headache of claiming you bags and re-checking them. Also, that is a great question that many beginning fliers would never think to ask.

@@kelseymills4119 I’m sorry, I misspoke in my answer - you shouldn’t have to claim it as long as your origin is in the U.S. and ATL is your layover regardless of the destination . You caught the "blocking man" at minute 6:17. Well done!!! One question on your last important note. You refer to domestic flights, don't you? I mean, if you arrive in an international flight you have to go to do custums and immigration, then go to international claiming luggage, pick it up, go to the concurse where your next domestic flight (when Atl is not the final destination) and there re-check your luggage. Is that correct?
@diegoferrando9346

I just saw a previous answer of yours regarding this matter. However I still have a doubt. @bozy106
@bozy106 3 жыл бұрын
@@diegoferrando9346 After Customs/Immigration you are directed to International Baggage Claim. After collecting your baggage, you will be directed down a short corridor and at the end is a sign that directs travelers who have Atlanta as their final destination to the right (where there are various ground transportation options). Those travelers, such as yourself, who have a connecting domestic flight will be directed to the left where there are baggage drop counters for those who are catching a connecting flight. After dropping your bags you will go through security and then head downstairs to the Plane Train so you can get to whichever Concourse your connecting flight will be leaving from. Your bags will be sent to your plane from this point. I have a video showing an international arrival, international baggage claim, and the corridor I am talking about (I believe that it is probably the one you watched at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJdzgMaoma2-h4U.html ) At the 14 min and 40 second mark it shows us leaving International Baggage Claim and heading down this short corridor I was speaking off. I have to go from terminal I to S. I think I is for "International" but S ???
@bozy106
@bozy106 3 жыл бұрын
Is your flight coming into Atlanta from outside the United States? If so, it stands to reason that "I" would be the International Terminal. This is where people check-in for outgoing international flights and go through customs/immigration/baggage claim on incoming international flights. As for the "S" the only thing I can think it could stand for would be the South Domestic Terminal. The domestic terminal, which handles check-in and baggage claim for all flights to destinations in the United States, is divided into two halves, the North and South. The South Terminal is dedicated to Delta Airlines (Atlanta is their main hub and they have their largest presence there). The North Terminal has all the other domestic airlines (United, Spirit, American Airlines, Alaska, JetBlue, etc). In summary, the terminals handle checking in, baggage drop and baggage claim. The concourses are essentially groups of gates, they are lettered T, A, B, C, D, E & F. The individual gates will begin with the concourse letter and then the gate number, like "C-21" which would be in Concourse C. I hope this gives you a little guidance.

Delta uses gates all over the airport, however other airlines often only use gates clustered near each other on only one or maybe two concourses. If your flight isn’t with Delta there is a good chance that your connecting flight will be at a nearby gate.

If I’m at concourse T and I want to get to F. Do I have to ride through A, B, C, D, E? Or is there another train going in the opposite direction? I have a 45 minute connection to an international flight and I’m so worried about missing the second flight that’s leaving from ATL.
@bozy106

Yes, that is the order the plane train will stop at the concourses. There are trains running in each direction. The order of the stops is as follow: Domestic Baggage Claim, T, A, B, C, D, E, F and then the train reverses and heads back the other way stopping at the concourses. As long as your arriving flight is on time you shouldn’t have any problem making it from T to F in 45 minutes. Trains come along about every 2 or 3 minutes in each direction.

Although it’s not my video, check out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJeTZdSiuLXegY0.html beginning at around the 2 minute 50 second mark for a real-time view of how long it takes the Plane Train to get from T to F. (Don’t stress about the multiple diverging tunnels you see between E and F, those are for the Plane Train maintenance facilities and don’t lead anywhere)

It’s easy and you’ve got this. Just keep walking and before long you’ll be on the plane to your destination. Check out some of my other ATL airport videos if you want to see more/similar videos. I hope everything goes smoothly for you!

So i dont have to check my bag then if i am commign from knox to atl... then to portland if i am using both delta then correct. i can just go to my next area
@bozy106

That is correct. To be 110% certain and for peace of mind when you drop off your bag in Knoxville ask the agent “Will this be checked through to my final destination?” They should say yes.

The best advice I can give you is to watch some of my ATL airport videos so you will know what to expect. I have videos of me checking in Southwest and with Delta for flights; these are different because these airlines operate out of opposite side of the Domestic Terminal, which is divided into north and south sections. Also for when you return I also included an ATL baggage claim video that I made. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lZlje66anLq7mZs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mrOHdb2bnc6dgKc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/js6pg7dzr9CdYKc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9uXbKtiqrG-oqc.html I hope you have a good trip!

which one gates is for spirit
@bozy106
@bozy106 2 жыл бұрын
According to an April 2021 article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution “Spirit currently uses a mix of gates across multiple concourses, including two “preferential use” gates on Concourse D and periodic use of seven to eight common-use gates on Concourse E for other flights” This is consistent with what I’ve seen with gates scattered here and there among many of the concourses. Your printed it electronic boarding pass will have the gate number printed on it once you check in for your flight.

@bozy106
@bozy106 2 жыл бұрын
@@ansongallaway8656 Sorry if I didn't explain it well..... At ATL the various gates are grouped together in sections called Concourses. At ATL, domestic flights leave out of Concourses named T, A, B, C, D, and E. A Spirit flight could be at any number of the roughly 180 gates in these Concourses. When you check in for your flight either via an online app or in person at the airport you will be given an electronic boarding pass or a paper boarding pass which will have a gate number on it, such as "C22". This means the gate is in Concourse C and the gate will have a sign over it with "C22" on it.
