Wow. Bi-polar, schizophrenic and manic. He was asking for help on the interview. They need better help for people with mental health issues. They can’t keep their on jail forever unless the crime requires it. No matter how many times you are arrested. Now he’s going to jail for life and still will not get the help he needs. Atlanta was hot yesterday. Rest in peace to all those who lost their lives and recovery for those injured.

Was he not receiving his psych. meds OR was he just not taking them??? The bias of the reporting in this story makes it sound as if the mental health system failed him by not providing the meds. Society is not at fault for him, for whatever reasons, not taking or going after his medications. Even patients in a psychiatric hospital cannot be forced to take medications against their will. Where was the family?

In some states, there are mental health courts. If a crime is essentially due to a treatable mental problem, a criminal case can be xferred to a mental health court. If the judge accepts a treatment plan, the subject is required to follow it for a period of time, and criminal prosecution is paused. If they screw up, the criminal case is revived.

A manic episode can distort thinking significantly. Delusions and even hallucinations are possible. If he was schitzoaffective, then the psychosis can be present even when he is not manic or depressed. He is still accountable, of course (though his 19 priors seemed under punished), but he may not have known what he was doing. Nonetheless, I hope this doesn't go like those 19 other arrests.

In 1981, the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) was approved by the National Congress and signed into law by President Reagan. It included provisions that repealed most of the MHSA (Mental Health Systems Act), discontinuing federal funding and the support for community mental health centers established under the MHSA. This caused thousands of mentally ill people to be let out on the streets and to this day mentally ill people make up the majority of the homeless population in America.

This is a tragic event involving public transit, condolences and prayers go out to everyone involved, also let's not forget the suspect has 19 prior arrests, but the allegation of him having a mental illness, now the question is this: Who failed Who. The mental health system only works if you use it, how many of his arrests were contributed to his mental illness and why were no flags raised about it. This story should serve as a reminder that mental illness if left untreated either by oneself or unwillingness to seek help, might result in something like this.

Let me say this. I have a brother who is schizophrenic/bipolar. If he is off his meds, he is violent. He doesn't sleep and walks the streets talking to voices in his head. Whenever he acts out at my house I call the taskforce the police has in place for mental health patients. They take them to the hospital. This situation is sad and praying for everyone involved. Someone dropped the ball to help this man.

It will be interesting to see if _self-defense_ is brought up by his laywer. Presumably, the defendant had done _something_ that prompted the armed guy to draw on him.

Yeah. Mania can make someone "overly" social, hyper sexual, extreme risk taking, etc. Can also get easily irritated sometimes. And delusional thinking of any kind, but delusion of grandeur goes with mania quite nicely.

My heart goes out to his mom and dad,but I would think that anyone who you already know is dangerously mentally ill and refuse to take their medication.I feel like his parents should have went before a judge and had an order signed so that he could have been placed in a mental hospital so that he would have been forced to take his meds.I also feel like the judges order should have been also signed requiring him to be in a mental hospital for no less than 6 months until he could function some what like a normal person with meds.

Police in this country have no logical reasoning. Why not follow that huge bus by helicopter and have officers follow at a good distance? Police riding beside the bus with lights on will only rile the suspect up causing him to travel at dangerous speeds. There were people on the bus, possible elderly and children. If the bus had flipped or went off a ravine then what. I’ve seen video of the suspect speeding and crashing in cars. This police thinking of going 0-100 in every situation only gets innocent people hurt.🤔🤦🏼🤨😡
