I was sent to USP Atlanta back in the 80’s, right after the Cuban riot at the prison. I was a first time offender for possession of marijuana ( not with intent to sell, if you can believe that, but for simple possession) and for not cooperating with the feds. They said as a first time non violent offender, I could go to a plush prison camp, with no walls, except that I must snitch. Well, I knew I was only facing a few years so I decided to keep my mouth shut which pissed off the DEA, and BAM!, they sent me to Atlanta. When I got there the place still looked like a war zone from the riot and living was a little rough. Many cell blocks had no glass in the windows, no running water, plumbing barely worked, chow hall destroyed. They guards let us take pretty much whatever we wanted to cook over campfires. So we hunkered down for the winter and did the best we could. Spring came and it became much warmer and we thrived. The guards never bothered us and we stayed out on the yard most of the day and half the night. I had good times and learned alot about myself. I never had any problems with anyone except one particular nutjob from Dallas. I taught him some manners and never had another issue. Sometimes I miss USP Atlanta. I was 28, now 65. Never went to jail after that and became a successful father and husband ( I crack down on my son and grandson. I won’t tolerate wrongdoing with my kids and grandkids 😊). I saw terrible things but I think it’s all up to the individual. Play stupid games in prison and you’ll get your just reward. It’s what YOU make it.

USP Atlanta looks cold and miserable. I have never seen anyone came in or out. You can still see the old warden house on the property. The USP sat in the hood right next to 4 seasons.
