Video #520: From the Wellness series with patented rollers "GUARANTEED" not to leave any metal residue (aka black streaks). More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
Topics Covered In This Video:
* Unboxing new Atlas 150 Wellness Series Pasta Machine Gold (direct link to this product on Amazon is orvided over at my blog... www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?....
* I needed a new pasta machine (mine was falling apart and leaving too many black streaks on my clay).
* This machine has anodized aluminum rollers which are supposed to eliminate metal residue on pasta (guaranteed they say)... hopefully it works to elliminate those metallic black streaks on polymer clay too. You can be sure I'll be keeping you in the loop on this one since those black streaks are such a pain.
* First impressions... beautiful, sturdy, high quality feel out of the box.
* Comes with a strong C-clamp that has a metal thumb screw. This is a big improvement over the very breakable, plastic design on lower quality pasta machines.
* The crank handle is made of what feels like a strong metal. I mentioned in the video that the handle insert slot appeared to be a title loose... and that it may need tightening with my Pasta Machine Rubber Glove Trick (see resource link further down on this page)... but based on further useage, I found that the handle did stay put and works just fine as is. Yay!
* There is a clamp hole on both sides of the machine. Nice!
* The handle and gears move smooth like butter. Trust me, you can feel a huge difference between this this Atlas Machine and the less expensive Sculpey or Amaco Clay Machines.
* The thickness settings on this machine range from 1 at the thickest, to 9 for the thinnest.
* Although I did not show this in the video, here are the Playing Card Thickness measurements which correspond to the settings on this Atlas 150 Wellness Pasta Machine. 1 = 8 playing cards; 2 = 6 cards; 3 = 4 cards; 4 = 3 cards; 5 = 2 cards; 6 = 1.5 cards; 7 = 1 card; 8 = 0.75 cards; and 9 = 0.25 cards (very thin).
* Clay runs through all the settings beautifully. Even sticky clay went to an extremely thin sheet.
* I'm in love! Sorry Dougie!

I have just ordered one of these from Amazon after seeing your recommendation a week or two ago. I have been putting my clay between sheets of waxed paper as my old machine left black streaks every time, but while that's been a great short term fix, I decided for the sake of the extra time, and the guilt over all the paper I've been going through, this was the way to go. And now I've watched this, I can't wait for it to arrive! Thanks for all your videos, they are wonderfully helpful x

Thanks Cindy for the great review. I have just received a light blue one like yours. It is beautiful to use, and such good quality. I had an absolutely horrible one - amaco -that shredded the clay no matter what I did with and I was always slicing my fingers on it. I almost gave up trying and ended up manually rolling the clay. I am over the moon with my new purchase, it rolls out smoothly and easily.

Before finding your AWESOME - WONDERFULL - INFORMATIVE - INSPIRING - THOUGHTFUL videos & website, I found myself reeling over the numerous "must-have-this" tutorials out there that are often "brand specific endorsed" and expensive suggesting that I "NEED" this particular tool in order to work with clay. My interest in the craft dwindled. Having said that, your advice not only saved me from spending money on an unnecessary product, it gave me confidence and inspiration regarding crafting with clay. I purchased a clay pasta machine for $10.00 and became discouraged when I wasn't able to achieve the desired results for creating a project! The sheets of clay were just way too thin and had tons of air bubbles. While watching your "tut's" I learned that conditioning the clay correctly directly effects the end result of a piece. I knew that I wanted the "Atlas machine" when I saw how excited you became whilst opening your machine! Happy to report that I now have the "Atlas Wellness". What a difference! It provides the perfect precise thickness and is very smooth to operate. Anyway, thanks for sharing your information and resources. You're my ONLY RELIABLE source for everything polymer clay. Look forward to seeing what is next!

Very excited, it is my turn to buy an Atlas 150 Wellness. I really feel like a kid as I also purchased a motor for the Atlas. After having to have my third lot of injections into my left shoulder and the first for my right tennis elbow, I thought if anyone ever needed a motor as well, then I qualified. Can't wait for them to arrive. Yah 🥰!

Hi Sarah Loreto, this Atlas machine does not squeak, but my doer machines did. I sometimes would put a drop of oil right where the rollers rubbed against the sides of the machine and that would help with the squeaking. Hope that helps you!

Thanks for reviewing, Cindy, you are right in fashion with your "unboxing video". I love my Atlas, too. I have the 180 and motor which I bought last fall. I've never had an issue with this machine leaving marks on my clay. I wonder if they have upgraded the rollers on all their machines? Atlas PMs are so smooth, I have actually not needed to use my motor. I was blaming old age for my sore joints when using my old cheapie machine LOL.

Amanda, I think it could be just your machine. There have been people who buy machines and force hard clay through them, and break them... then they return them and don't say anything. The company doesn't notice and sells them again. This kind of thing happens all the time. I would contact the company and tell them you want to have your machine replaced. I have had a very good experience with my machine and that is why I recommend it to others.

So much fun with the new pasta machine and gold to boot!!!! I am having trouble with bumps in my cooked clay. I put the fold in first to push the air out and I am using Sculpy III
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
Bumps are caused by air getting trapped in the clay. Try stretching the clay to help release the air. Also, SculpeyIII is a bad clay. It traps air easily and is brittle when baked. Consider switching to Premo or Souffle, Fimo, Cernit, Pardo or Cosclay (when it becomes available in the next few months.)

I have had it for just over a year and its suddenly started squeaking. I'm too nervous to take it apart as have no idea what I'm doing with it and I don't want to break it as it's working fine. The Atlas 150 Wellness is probably the one I will go with, but I have a question. When I tighten the clamp holding the machine to my table and then turn the handle to roll clay, the non-secured end lifts up. Do all machines do this?? Am I using the clamp somehow incorrectly?? My fianceé one of these at a thrift store/second hand shop some months ago for under $5/£3 and got it for me as a backup, he didn't realize what he got hold of for me. My first one was a streaky mess called a "Zilli" or "Zill" I can't decipher, either way it fell apart once before, isn't very sturdy and streaks every bit of clay it got hold of. I was so impressed by the Atlas 150 I'm sure you're going to have some great fun with it Cindy. It really does glide. As for the 2nd and 3rd rollers it really doesn't work on clay it just chews it and pulls it back inside it's self in my experience. I hoped it could make a nice long square strips, unforunately not. Really happy you got one though, hope you have fun! :)

Helloooo Cindy. I really need your help please... So, I have this exact machine. But the highest setting is too thin for my earrings; it's about 2mm, I prefer 3mm as 2mm just feels so brittle & cheap, ya know?!. So, I have to condition, then cut the slab in half & double up to roll it out manually. This sometimes means I get marks from clay joining together, shiny marks from my tile underneath, or it it's more prone to air bubbles. Am I being silly and is there a better PCT way of doing this? Thanks in advance 💓
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lizzie, your pieces should not be brittle even if their paper thin. If they are you're either using a poor quality clay, or it is not being cured properly. We have lots of videos on brands and proper baking if you want to check out our channel. In regards to thicker layers with a regular pasta machine, the only way to do it is to roll by hand or to stack layers like you did. But another option, if you have the budget for it is a Lucy Clay Machine. If you want to check them out, here's the link: www.lucyclay.com/tools/machine/

Hi Julie Pierce If yours is an Atlas as well, the cutter attachment slides into a slot at the back of the unit. It is kind of at an angle so you don't pull straight up, but towards yourself at an angle. Hopefully that makes sense. If yours is a different brand, maybe it isn't removable?

I saw one ob metalclay.co.uk but it is currently sold out. I bought a cheap one on ebay but one of the rollers didn't move and I got my money back. I, too, bought one of these great machines, but mine is silver and the attachment will NOT come off. It is an Atlas 150 Wellness, just like yours, but in silver. No matter how hard I tug, I cannot get the attachment off. Yours seemed to slide off easily. Anyone else have a suggestion? OKAY! It's off!!! I decided to actually look at the booklet. Although it doesn't say HOW to take it off, it shows a color picture of a man standing up with the machine attachment facing him. He pulls up from that direction. Seated I can't take it off, but standing up over the machine with it facing away from me, I can. Weird, but it works :)

I heard non stick rollers were the way to go. Do you have an opinion about that?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 3 жыл бұрын
Non stick rollers are great as long as they are quality. The only non-stick rollers I have used are the ones on the Lucy Clay Machine and they have been fantastic, but I don't know about any others that may be out there. I would look at the reviews, since I haven't done any reviews on non-stick rollers specifically. Anodized aluminum are also wonderful. No issues with the ones on this Atlas machine in the video.

Most major cities have an Italian market that would almost certainly sell these. I am wondering if the polymer clay would ruin the machine for actually making pasta. Is it washable ... does it completely come apart for washing?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 9 жыл бұрын
Hi retroboomer Yeah, since you can't really clean the machines that well, I wouldn't use a pasta machine for food, after it has been use for polymer clay.

What is your opinion on the Dream machine.. I've been saving for that pasta machine for polymer clay. Is it worth me spending allthat money on it. Or should I get something else..Did you get the motor for this machine???Thanx
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Li Du I think the Dream Machine is probably wonderful but I just can't get past the fact that it is over $200 to pre-order it and it might take a year or more for them to get enough orders to do a product run. I can't wait for that! And no I didn't get a motor. I am in the minority, but I just can't see the reason for buying an expensive more. The handle works great. Unless you have serious shoulder, arm or hand issues, a motor is just not necessary fort most people.

I notice there are many types of this 150 machine, some which cost half as much. Seems some also still have the plastic handles not metal. What is the deal with that, Yours seems to cost more, the finish. The chrome half as much. Is it the same? Big difference for color. They all say the 150 Wellness but are not the same. arg.

Hi JoAnn Hamer Yes there is a polymer clay conference in the USA every year. (I haven't been myself, but from what I hear they are inspiring.) Just Google International Polymer Clay Association and you can learn more about those. If you are looking to learn more about polymer clay, this channel as well as my blog at www.polymerclaytutor.com has absolutely tons of information on it. Any question that has been asked about polymer, has been probably answered on my blog at one point or another, so do make sure to check that resource out. There are over 500 videos, thousands of posts and tens of thousands of comments with a huge community of helpful members. SO happy you found us. Enjoy your polymer clay journey!

I purchased a brand new wellness 150 from amazon; it was stainless steel not anodized. I just tested it and am very disappointed. It is OK on setting 1. On setting 2 it makes washboard like horizontal grooves. Any higher setting the edges are ruffled with one thin strip of flat clay in the center. Do you think this is just one bad machine?

+Zoe Damsel +rafikisam and +Amanda Thomas If you guys are having problems with your machines, you need to contact the manufacturer. Atlas is well known for good machines, but if they are making machines that are inferior or there are companies that are selling ones that have been broken, then the company should know about it. The machine I have is the best that I have had before and am pleased with it. That doesn't mean there aren't possible issues with other machines out there. Let me know if the issues get resolved. +Zoe Damsel I am looking forward to testing the Lucy Clay Machine when it comes out. It is definitely a lot more expensive but it promises to be worth the price. I for one hope it is.

I really appreciate all your videos. You provide so much helpful information. I will use my 25+ year old atlas (with paper protection) until I see your Lucy Clay Machine approval. I would like a new Wellness 150 but returning the bad one to Amazon was a hassle. My theory is the "color/anodized" are OK.

Hi ahmed awaad yes this Atlas is WAY better than the Sculpey Machine! My old machines have lasted years but they always left black streaks and collected a lot of clay behind the scrapers. This one there is no streaks and clay doesn't seem to stick to the scrapers at all. A quick wipe and the machine is clean!

Is it easy to clean this machine?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
No... but it is designed better than a lot of the cheap machines, so it doesn't get as much clay behind the scrapers. If you like this machine and want it to be easy clean, there is a guys that modifies them with removable scrapers, and acrylic base and a easy clean powder coating. You can get them at www.edscolors.com Tell him the Polymer Clay Tutor sent you.
