Atomic Heart is a fascinating game, yet some modern design trends weigh it down.
For a long time, I wasn't sure Atomic Heart was real. It seemed like all smoke and mirrors, and various gameplay demonstrations looked lacking. Stories of a messy development didn't help.
Well, I was proven wrong. Atomic Heart is very much real, and it's fantastic. Atomic Heart very much fills that Bioshock-shaped hole that's existed for the last decade. Russian Bioshock is the easiest way to describe Atomic Heart, but there's much more to it. The worldbuilding and art direction of Atomic Heart are second to none - standing out in a sea of sequels, reboots, and remakes.
• SUPPORT: / boulderpunch
Get access to videos early, receive a weekly update, and be featured in the credits.
The combat offers a wide variety of tools to mix and match. Atomic Heart is a blast when it's firing on all cylinders and you fall into a groove. I wasn't sure about the open-world portions at first, but they did win me over with the sheer chaos that could occur during these sections.
As great as it is, Atomic Heart does fall victim to several trends that have plagued modern large-budget titles. The excessive amount of crafting items can feel like a chore. Atomic Heart contains one of the most egregious examples of too much banter and not giving the game room to breathe.
It's a shame some of these modern trends rear their ugly head because Atomic Heart is a standout in so many other ways.
I was able to put in 16 hours into Atomic Heart. About three quarters for the critical path, and a quarter for side content. I have not finished the game. The review guide says 20+ hours for the main campaign and 15+ hours for side content.
Thanks to the publisher Focus Entertainment for providing a review code for Atomic Heart a few days before the embargo lifting.

Adding to the banter part. I don't wanna be cruel, but whoever overseen the game was in my eyes terrified we would get bored without dialog and would miss enviromental storytelling deets, if they would to swap some dialog with it. There's almost not a moment, for You to soak in the atmosphere which with all that yapping seems stuffy.

Fanatic that nearly every reviewer thinks that Mike Gordon made the OST and ignores that most of the tracks arnt done by him, showing of "mike´s OST" with tracks done by Geoffplaysguitar. I definitely like the voice actor for the protagonist more in the Russian dub, he has a grit in his voice that matches the skeptical and sardonic dialogue better than the American actor, who sounds more like a flippant undergrad than an unsophisticated army officer.

While the music is good, it is sadly a bit out of place. Sure it completely changes the tone and hits from nowhere with boss fights or fights inside facilities in certain point of the story on its own nicely done. But I might argue that sometimes it feels out of place or what is even worse starts playing when it should not. Example a part which music starts enemies are attacking fits the fight, fight is over music either cuts or fades way I moved a few steps music start with full impact I look around there is no reason for it to be playing move a few more steps a single enemy which I deal with in quickly music is still playing which confuses the player as it should indicate more enemies but there is not a minute later it cuts. So on this technical level they could have done a bit better job. As for the full game I liked it thought it was good with ok story more or less till the end I did not like the ending(s) which overall reduced the final score for the the as a whole.

I played a little bit of this the other day. Going to try more today. It seems to me that the developers probably would have liked to go more in the immersive sim direction but probably couldn't quite get there. It's not easy to accommodate that kind of openness and player choice. This game already had a pretty long, tortured development cycle. Many people thought it would just be vaporware, would never come out. I imagine downgrading and simplifying some of the immersive sim style features was necessary, something similar to what ended up happening to Bioshock Infinite. It downgraded to an Fps to finally get out of development hell.

Based on a few reviews with English voice over, and your. I have to say that p3 seems to be more tolerable and sounds a bit less like an a-hole in Russian. The things like voice tone, intonation can change how we perceive the character and while he still might be unpleasant person it might be less annoying. Also game have option to put any voice over and any subtitles on consoles. Yeah this should be standard, sadly many console games lock player to console language which is just stupid.

@@bbbbbbb51 We Russians talk in a relaxed manner, and our voice actors tend to "act" instead of just talking naturally in videogames. So that's why it comes as over the top for us. Because it kinda is. I mean it's not over the top exactly, but it's on its way. But it's also probably for censoring reasons, since guys like the protagonist would swear a lot normally, not to mention in their situation. And man, Russian curses are expansive and creative, probably more so that the Russian language proper. So they probably were scraping the barrel for something to replace that style of speech with, while still making the protagonist tough and believable

I always prefer the progression of abilities, but especially so when a single playthrough isn't enough to unlock everything like in Deus Ex or Sekiro. finished it. it's like bioshock but with robots and in a sci-fi version of the ussr. very good. they've put a lot of work in making the shooting and gunplay feel great, it's very smooth and satisfying. the puzzles are challenging but not too difficult, and they've fixed most of the bugs that were present on release date. i loved the talking dead people. i found it hilarious and in a few cases they were well incorporated in the game. I wish they'd spent more time on the story however. it's not particularly engaging. we know that the agent p3 and sechenov were supposed to be very close as sechenov saved his life, but the game mostly fumbled this. there were also scenes in the underground where the ussr had been doing experiments on people, and P3 is disgusted by it, but then he just quickly got out. I was expecting something more story wise, but nothing kinda happened, the visuals were there, but the story was missing. The open world also feels hard to explore. like you can't put a marker and follow a path to go from a to b. most of the rooms are also static, there's not a lot of things you can throw around or destory, which is weird because one of the powers you get lets you throw stuff at enemies, but there's nothing to throw.

Probably put in about 6 hours and the game is pretty and fun. I will say that I wish the protag and the "glove" would talk less. It's reminding me too much of Forspoken with how the protag constantly shits on the "glove". The slow strafing annoys me from time to time also.

I see comments that it runs terribly on Series X and higher end PC’s….but it runs BEAUTIFULLY on Series S 60fps 1080p. I’m loving it! Certain to be a Cult Classic!

I’m really enjoying the game as well, I switched to the Russian audio dialogue because the line delivery from the protagonist’s actor was borderline intolerable for me. Like… why did they direct him to deliver every line like he was a 14 year old jock who just punched a hole in his parent’s drywall. I do the find the “crispy critters” phrase to be unintentionally hilarious though.

imo the combat feels weightless. constantly hitting enemies who barely even flinch not to mention the constant backtracking to get some key or item just to progress makes this game feel dated and quite frankly a chore to play

Hell yes, I haven't watched the video yet (obviously since it just came out) but I'm glad that you called it fantastic. Honestly, your review was one of the opinions I was most looking foward to listening (especially when it comes to Immersive sims and games of that style). Picking it up this weekend.

Despite what a lot of reviewers are saying I feel like this is something special. Yes it has its flaws but the world they have brought to life is fantastical and intriguing. Only a little ways in and I can’t wait to have the time to dive back in and see what’s going to happen next. Anyone who is playing take your time with the game and take in all the environmental storytelling. Really hoping for a new game plus option soon.

I couldn't tolerate all the banter. It's endless. I ended up muting the dialogue because I just couldn't tolerate it. Especially because it's never funny or entertaining. The upgrade robot is so embarrassing that I physically cringed when I first heard it. Combat and movement felt incredibly sluggish and clunky. All the best parts of the game feel derivative. Yeah, I dunno about this one. I feel like calling it a Russian Bioshock is disingenuous. The two games are nowhere near, in any stretch of the imagination, on the same levels of quality. It's a pretty decent Gamepass title though.

omg the dialoge is so cringe especially the English voice overs. When a little old lady says "eat shit and die" thats when i turned the game off and refunded. I wanted Russian Bioshock... what i got was Russian Duke Nukem forever

What bothers me is constant comparesson on Bioshock. I didn't like that game at all, in fact I consider it exceptionally bad. However, many said Dead Space, Half Life 2 and Wolfenstein: New Order and to some extend Dishonored are similar to System Shock which from what I understand Bioshock is something of a soft reboot of System Shock and I consider the games I listed as one of the best. So I am really puzzled what to think of it. Also fuck Denuvo, fucking malware is literally an argument for piracy.

I have been waiting for this game since sophomore year of highschool, (im now a sophomore in uni) and I really want to play it, have another game in Russian like metro, but the game is funded by VK, a prominent Russian main news organization with close ties to the kremlin, so if you buy this, I guess you’re funding the Russian propaganda machine? Ion know, I just want to shoot funny Soviet robots
@steelbear2063
@steelbear2063 Жыл бұрын
Western Europe is still buying Russian resources, so I think you are fine if you just buy this one game. Also VK is not a news organization at all. It's a social network like Facebook, and Facebook outright spies on people on government's behalf, so I mean I guess funding your country's lies is better than funding my country's lies, but not by much

@@AndRei-yc3ti im not American, but the us doesn’t directly kill Iraqi kids on purpose, it isn’t their prerogative, the Russian government at this moment does, purposely targeting civilians, gomd

@Don Gulio they did though. There are numerous instances of Americans targeting weddings, school busses, etc in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Besides newly released info shows that only 9000 civilians died in Ukraine over a year of war, while the Americans killed more than that per year (on average 12,000). You can google for confirmation of this - youtube doesn't let me post links
