A good exercise for that is watching a subject and trying to draw it with a single line as if you were using an etch-a-sketch, but without looking at the page, the drawing will look bad but it's very good at training observation.

Isn't that like the most essential concept in sketching? I started not too long ago in order for me to create characters to my game. (I want to build everything from scratch) Every tutorial and book I have encountered always instructs to, "simplify things into lines and shapes." Most of them encourage to practice drawing 2D/3dDshapes and draw it rotated in a different angle. I think it practices the artist spatial sense and think of things in terms of 3D. Because of this, studies say artist brain has a different structure.

@@blackwater7183 It is very important, the main goal of the exercise I described is to see the shapes how they really are and not how you imagine them as it is often a problem for beginner artist, by looking away from the page and focusing on the subject you get to observe its shapes and lines without the pressure of trying to make a good looking sketch and ultimately straying from the subject to draw something that you are already familiar with. Another key if you want to progress fast is simply to sketch a lot and take notes about your sketches. No matter the skill level there will always be something that you would like to change on every drawing, taking notes about what you like/dislike or would change about the drawing helps eliminating bad habits.

@@vraolet Yes, my first sketching book talked about that. Tracing the outline of your subject with your eyes like laser and putting it in paper. The books that I got after that were more geared towards drawing figures from imagination because I want to create stylized/fictional characters for my game. I have noticed vetaran artist here in youtube can draw really crisp lines and shapes. Even when one guy I follow drew a circle, it looked so perfect. Their fine motor skills are very honed. I on the other hand struggle to draw the most basic shapes. Lol.

Yeah, hate it when people refer to a fully finished beautiful drawing as a 'sketch'. This is just how language changes over time so now sketch just means 'black and white drawing' even if its a highly finished peice of art.
