Atomstack A20 Pro - What can we do with 20 watts of diode laser power?!?!

Diode lasers have come a long way in the past couple of years and recently we've started to see 20w diode lasers become available. Atomstack sent their A20 pro laser to my shop for a fair review so I put it to the test by cutting various materials and seeing how well it performs the typical engraving functions as well. This kit includes the 20w laser, air pump and the R2 rotary device and we put them all to the test.

I've had my Atomstack A20 for a couple of weeks now and am just getting to the point where I can try it out. Out of the box, the X axis wouldn't roll because the rollers had developed flat spots where they sat on the rails. I took them off and found two of the rollers had gouges that made them unusable, and the rest of the rollers developed flat spots after sitting unused for a day. New rollers fixed the problem. The gantry rocked on 3 rollers until I loosened the end screws to let it align itself. The laser didn't fit the dovetail until that was reworked. All set up now waiting for the Comgrow camera you reviewed recently.

That's too bad on all the problems with the A20. I didn't run into any issues like that with mine but I'll keep an eye on it for any that develop. The camera does take some calibration so hopefully working through the offsets will help as you dial it in.

I picked this Laser up back in June and largely have been satisfied with it. Was not wild about the cable mgt and some of the connections are loose fitting. Maybe that has been corrected by now for the one you got. But the USB connection for my computer is really loose and wobbly. After months of pretty intense use I can say that it does cut well, as you found. I am not unhappy with it even after months of continuous use. However I do miss the incredible detail I could get with the Ortur 5w I had before when it comes to engraving. And the Air assist I got with mine was not the same one as you got. This may be why I get pretty excessive over burns on nearly all of my cuts. Also if anyone gets one of these and puts it into an enclosure, it generates a TON of smoke and debris so make sure you have decent ventilation. Mine overwhelms my ventilation/filter and as a consequence it sticks around in the enclosure getting sucked into the laser by the VERY LOUD fan that is on top of the laser head that keeps the 4 diodes cool. I discovered that frequent cleaning is needed to keep the fan and inside of the laser module from being completely bricked with soot. It is a good machine, but it has it's specific strengths (cutting) and weaknesses (In my experience, engraving detail). If you need a good cutting machine at this price point (vs. stepping up to a CO2 laser) then this is a good option. But I do plan on getting another Ortur with the fine focal point for my more detailed engraving projects. Good review. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for your input. I do want to do more testing on the engraving and compare it to the 5w and 10w units I have on hand. I think on clear wood, stainless steel, or tiles you'll really see the detail difference in the engraving.

@@Vintauri Update. After only 6 months of use, the thing shows damage on the lens cover, which they must expect because one of the resellers lists the lens covers for sale in batches of 3. Tried to order them and have been told it will be months before I can get it due to them being out of stock. Not sure if this is the reason or something else, but I now can no longer cut even 3mm Baltic Birch (even at 100mm/m and 100% power). Getting help from the company is apparently impossible since I purchased it from a reseller and the reseller has proven completely unwilling to help me. Deal with this company at your own risk. Is there no companies that make lasers that are not in China?
@Vintauri
@Vintauri Жыл бұрын
@@jackhelm9852 is it the lens cover glass on the removable brass ring or the actual inner focus lens that is damaged? If it’s the lens cover glass there are easy replacements that can be found elsewhere and cheaper than direct from the manufacturer. It’s the same cover as used on the XTool and other diode lasers.

Good video. I am looking at an x20 or x30 Atomstack for classroom projects. I primarily need to cut and engrave 3mm and the 5mm HomeDepot Purebond 3 ply (hardwood veneer with poplar core) plywood. Of course engraving. Would both work and it is just about speed?
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 15 күн бұрын
Either one should get through that material without too much hassle. I was just cutting some of that this weekend on the Atomstack A24 at around 400-500mm/min. The more power would allow you to increase the speed a little. Any unit you purchase make sure to sort out a safe enclosure to deal with the light and smoke, especially if you use it in the classroom with others around. If it's just you, you can get by with the goggles and open air ventilation, but an enclosure makes it much easier and safer to deal with.

Unfortunately diode lasers cannot cut metal other than super thin material like foil. You need a much higher powered laser to do that.

Good afternoon, I have had my A20 pro for a couple of days now and I’ve tried various material tests as laid out by AtomStack and my laser will not achieve the cuts they have stated. Having watched your video, I matched the parameters you set with the same material, laser focused correctly etc. for me to get through 5mm ply I had to have the power at 95% at 250mm/m and 4 passes. Is there anything you can think of that might be set wrong on my end to get such different results? Thank you.
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 9 ай бұрын
You may want to check your device settings and look up the $30 value. It should be set to 1000 but if it's lower it may not be allowing the full power of your laser module to output. I've seen this be set at 255 which would mean it's running at 25% power.

It seems the next jump for most manufactures are in that range. I'm not convinced that it will help you cut much thicker material, due to the same focal depth, but it should help speed up the same cuts and engravings.

Hi, I have an atomstack s20 max. The power of the laser is 18-20w. They cannot cut plexiglass (acryl) 3 mm at all. Is the problem that the laser power is low, or did I not set good parameters for cutting? I use the lightburn program
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 2 ай бұрын
If you are trying to cut clear it will not do it at any power. It's the wrong wavelength and you need a Co2 laser for that. If it's black or another solid dark color you should be able to cut through 3mm acrylic but it may be slow depending on your lasers actual power output I would start around 150mm/min speed and 80-100% power and adjust from there.

At this price point, why would you get this laser instead of a K40 with some upgrades? I understand if you need to mark metals, but the cheaper 10W lasers can do that as well.
@Vintauri
@Vintauri Жыл бұрын
This still has a larger cutting area of over twice the size of a K40 as well as being more portable. There are also fewer things to manage from mirror alignment to water cooling setup thats needed for a CO2 laser. But you also give up the ability to cut any color acrylic including clear and it's still less power than the 40w CO2. Both have their features one might want to consider when choosing a laser.

Clack sent me to this vid. Thanks. I am looking for a 20w and had asked Clack his opinion. If you had $1500 to spend on a 20w, what would it be? I currently have the xtool d1 pro 10w. A 20 w head for it is $700 (fyi).
@Vintauri
@Vintauri Жыл бұрын
I don’t think you can go wrong with the XTool or the Atomstack 20w laser so it would depend on if there were features one had that really appealed to you. I’d also consider the Sculpfun S30 pro max. It has auto air control to turn on and off the air pump using the lighburn switch per layer. Outside of that I do like the Atomstak air pump better than others. It seems to put out more air.

I have not tried Teflon. I know a CO2 laser will cut Teflon sheets but the diode might not have a quality effect. You also need to be very careful with the dust created by cutting Teflon as it's not good to get into your lungs.
