Tchaikovsky wrote his only piano trio in "memory of a great artist", after his mentor and friend Nikolai Rubinstein had died. And even though he had strong observations against writing a piano trio - the sheer sound of the three instruments together did not please him - he later admitted to be "quite proud" of his new work, even though it seemed to him to be more of an orchestral score in disguise than a real piano trio. In any case, it is full of heartfelt passion, beautiful melodic inspiration and the typical Tchaikovskian Ballet characterizations - even though the Sleeping Beauty or the Nutcracker had not been composed yet.

An excellent and heartfelt rendition of one my favorite trios - from any composer. Kudos to the three artists in nailing this difficult and beautiful work. Thanks very much for posting.

I was writing a speech for the memorial concert of a chamber music mentor of mine while listening to this. He was a widely special person to me and the first piece he had ever coached me on was the mendelssohn d minor trio and the atos trio's rendition was always the one I looked to. Remembering all those good memories and listening to this Tchaikovsky makes me incredibly emotional. I know that we would have had so much fun and feeling working on it if we had the time together. Thank you so so much for the wonderful rendition, I cried at 8:45

maybe the finest rendering i've heard on YT , the diminuendi at the end were just admirable .

Very nice performance, but I'm always dismayed (and rather puzzled) when the repeat in the finale is skipped. To my mind, hearing the energetic section twice provides a better balance to the mournful & intensely emotional final section - a classic case of a composer having good reason for repeating a section.
