Atreyapuram Pootharekulu is a famous sweet delicacy that originated from the village of Atreyapuram in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is made from a thin and delicate sheet of rice flour, known as "poothareku" in Telugu, which is filled with a mixture of jaggery and grated coconut. The poothareku is then folded and shaped into a cylindrical or rectangular form.
Pootharekulu is a traditional sweet, made by hand by the skilled craftsmen of Atreyapuram village. It is a labor-intensive process and requires a lot of skill and patience to make, due to its delicate nature. The poothareku sheets are made by rolling out a mixture of rice flour and water to a thin and uniform thickness, using a rolling pin on a smooth surface. The process of making pootharekulu is passed on from generation to generation and is a closely guarded secret among the families that make it.
Atreyapuram Pootharekulu is typically consumed as a sweet, after meals or as a dessert and is also popular as a festive sweet. Due to its delicate nature and short shelf life, it is usually consumed fresh or within a day or two of making it.
It is also considered as one of the signature sweet of Andhra Pradesh. It's gaining popularity across the country and being sold in many sweet shops and being exported as well.
