aTrippyFarmer and his family are hard at it again today in hopes of cutting large amounts of their soybean crop. However, they are still faced with their largest challenge of the year: their brand new S780 is still completely incapacitated. Andy rides up to check on it in the morning to see it being towed to the trailer for road transport. Andy watches as the John Deere service team cranks the combine onto the flat bad trailer, making use of a variety of different loading strategies. The S780 makes it safely onto the trailer and leaves the field for the John Deere dealership. Hopefully it is fixed within a reasonable amount of time. After the combine is gone, Andy and his family start to move towards a new field to cut. These beans are at the appropriate moisture: however, they may be one of the lowest yielding fields of the season due to all of the water damage. The crew pushes on with one combine, and progress is certainly slow. Andy takes advantage of the delay between combine hoppers to discuss a variety of different agronomic factors that affected this specific field. Once they finish that field, the crew moves closer to home to work on those though Pioneer 3'9 soybeans from the previous video. They run into the night until the soybeans become too wet, and they stop. Thanks for watching!

Andy "aTrippyFarmer" Dole is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

I’d be asking the dealer for an extended warranty, if the pump went it’s likely that the hydraulic system now has a bunch of debris in it. The filter will catch it but depending on how long it ran and how good they do when they put the pump back on some other systems may be affected. Hyd Valves don’t like contaminated fluid, the cylinders and a lot of other systems it won’t hurt.
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer 2 жыл бұрын
That is a scary thought. I believe they will flush everything, but it is impossible to clean it out completely. I hope that we aren't stuck with a lot of long-term problems!
@dgrenier4908
@dgrenier4908 2 жыл бұрын
@@aTrippyFarmer I’d probably change the hydraulic fluid filter after maybe 10-15hrs of operation, take a 2oz sample and send it to a lab like Blackstone. Change the filter again at 25-30 hours, most of any junk left in the fluid should get caught in that 1st filter change after the repair. They’ll flush it most likely but it’s tough to get it all out, just too many places in the system where debris can get trapped. You’ll need to let the lab know that the pump cratered and that this is a post repair oil sample, have them run a standard analysis + particle count. The filter change and sample analysis are pretty cheap insurance and you’ll get a picture of where the fluid is at. We oil sample our engine oil, adds a few $$ to the oil change but pays when you catch a problem early before it’s a big problem. Normally we only sample hydraulic oil after something like what happened to yours and it’s repaired. Beats flushing the system multiple times and it’s piece of mind that the fluid is clean

With a lot of high moister beans to harvest maybe it is a good thing that only one combine is running.
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer 2 жыл бұрын
Although they were tough to harvest, the moisture was hanging around where it needed to be. It could be very costly in terms of dry weight losses if we do not keep getting rains to rehydrate the beans. Soybeans are such a bear to harvest because you have such a small window of optimal conditions, which is why it stinks to have a combine down!

Might be crazy, but in that wet field could you dig a big pond at the low point and surface drain or tile into it? Probably cheaper that a $70k 24in main over 2000 ft. Not as effective, but you could have a bass fishing spot and some drainage at the same time.
@RealJohnWayne
@RealJohnWayne 2 жыл бұрын
You Sir win the "Dukes Take" prize on this thread today! Slopping that field to a holding pond makes tremendous sense. By digging a pond in the lowest area of that field, you will gain a significant amount of dirt, that can be used to slope the other ground to the pond. Most of the dirt will most likely be sub-par dirt, not topsoil, so instead of covering good dirt with poor dirt, you remove the topsoil from all the places that needs to be filled so as to drain towards the pond, then replace the topsoil, plus you'll also gain the topsoil that was removed from the pond site. With the historical drought that's taking place in much of the Western US, and the ever-changing weather patterns, every significant land owner should be storing every bit of excess water runoff, and instead of dumping ground water from drainage tile into the creeks and streams, they should be storing it in ponds, and lakes, and that's the "Dukes Take" on how to turn unusable wet ground, into an invaluable resource, all while turning that wet unproductive ground, into dry productive ground, plus you'll have a fishin hole for the kids. 👍🤠🇺🇸
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer 2 жыл бұрын
I think your idea has legs in theory. However, the clay wall of a pond will retain water for long periods of time. If we received a large rainfall, the entire farm would still be underwater, because the pond will have already been full. We would still need a tile overflow, which would essentially erase the need for the pond. By the time all costs and losses are accounted for, installing a tile main would be the easiest solution, especially given the rich nature of that soil. Thanks for the comment!

@@aTrippyFarmer If you've ever been to a shopping center or mall, what do they do with all of the water that runs off acres of asphalt in a cloudburst..... think containment basins, large concrete, or dirt containment ponds, that are engineered to adequately contain those huge amounts of runoff water in a cloudburst, which all have a drain up adequately high that releases the water to the creeks or streams in a controlled manner, to prevent the shopping center from flooding everyone downstream. Here in the housing development that I live in, we have two such earthen ponds to catch all of the runoff from our streets and properties during a downpour, so that we don't flood the state road below, or cause the creek to flood other properties below us. I've never seen a pond or lake that doesn't have a overflow drain, just like yours would have, and sometimes the overflow drain empties into a overflow, overflow, pond. I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia, and we know a little about flash floods, and water containment, we also have Coal Mining further West towards Kentucky, and North towards West Virginia, and they have to catch all of their runoff in enormous sediment ponds, so as to not pollute the pristine creeks and streams where we have some of the best trout fishing in the country, so we know how to collect and contain excess water. My late father made a significant amount of money from buying properties deemed too wet to use, then drying it up and making it useable for both industrial and agricultural businesses. 👍🇺🇸

I can't believe this hydraulic issue with that 780 after what that thing costs... brand new you say? I try to think of it as if I had just purchased a brand new vehicle say 2021 truck and after putting 2500 miles on it I literally have to have it towed to the dealership to be repaired. To say I would be disappointed would be an understatement. Hope you get it back up and running soon.
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is a half million dollar machine, so our disappointment is imaginable. It is impossible to predict that issue because it is a one-off. The pump is sourced from another company, and it probably had a defect in specifications. This led to a failure at an unknown time, which is unfortunate for us!!

Made in USA used to mean something. Such a big failure on a new machine is inexcusable. JD and MOST other manufacturers cheap out on parts, materials, and engineering. Designed obsolescence, almost every product is designed to fail and be replaced rather than last a lifetime with simple maintenance/ repairs. How do we as consumers demand higher quality from the market? Maybe support smaller manufacturers that are making simpler products? Not sure, but Gleaner combines seem like much simpler, cheaper, and easier to repair machines. (At least according to Brian's Farming Videos)
@michaelpasold5083
@michaelpasold5083 2 жыл бұрын
That may be true until the Gleaner goes down. Many of these parts are made by other manufactures like Eaton for example. If this combine is new it’s covered by warranty. John Deere picks up the bill.
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer 2 жыл бұрын
I do not think there is a solution. That pump isn't even made by Deere. As with every other brand, it is not worth their money to create parts in-house. One company makes their livelihood supplying all of the manufacturers with the same bearings, belts, pumps, etc. that create the machine when assembled. Simpler is only better when the problem is the complexity. In this instance, the pump hardware was bad, which isn't really an issue of over-engineering. I will say that smaller brands, like Gleaner, are incredibly important for consumers, regardless of their own brand choice. We need competition to keep everyone honest!
