Sept. 10, 1989: Locations: West of Summit, Hesperia, Frost. UP crew at Hesperia had to inspect their train after hot box/dragging eguipment detector at MP 48.5 sounded off. Same train contained Farmer John hog block steel cars as seen at Frost.

You see this is why we need to bring back the caboose! The caboose is my favorite car of the train. My father told me when he was working on the railroad he saw cabooses when he was young. And now, they got End of Train (EOT) devises.

I don't think they were Southern Pacific trains in the video, but there was a Chicago & North Western locomotive on a UP mixed-freight train which was consistent of three engines leading and tons of freight cars.

Thanks for the comment and sub. That first location (Silverwood) was a good location to experience barking GEs and screaming EMDs going uphill.

Thanks. That train had a particularly "harmonious" sound of two 2-stroke and two 4-stroke diesels in run 8 on a 2+ % grade. Silverwood was one my favorite spots in Cajon.

I remember those old ATSF hotbox detectors on MP 48.5. They had a "monotone" male voice recording. When it alert you on an issue, it said "You have a defect" and a rotated white light flashed on the trackside. The issue results played twice.

"You have a defect" was a dreaded sound to the train crews, including the crews of nearby trains. Some detectors gave an axle count which you divided by 4 to find out how many car lengths the conductor or brakeman would be walking. Thanks for the comment.

Ancient tank car with friction bearings at 12: 21. Cool that old stuff was still running in the late 80’s too bad you didn’t catch a “HOT BOX”. Lol

They were finally outlawed 1/1/94. Canadian cars were given a grace period in the U.S. Thanks for the comment.

I like everything pre BNSF and pre Union Pacific. I mean when Union Pacific was a much smaller railroad than the behemoth of today that spans 23 states.

I find it funny that BNSF inherited ATSF's tendency to not repaint half of its power into the newest liveries.

I always hear "paint doesn't make money", and evidently that's something BNSF has taken to heart. They won't repaint something unless they have a reason to. But then again, former ATSF and BN local power has been turning orange rather quickly lately.

Locomotives are only repainted during major rebuilds and overhauls. Sometimes those don't line up with mergers and general managers.

Would it be asking to much to show the engine numbers, type of engine and h.p. ? I tried but came up empty handed!

Consumer camcorders in those days didn't have a shutter control and many engine numbers ended up blurred when there was any movement. The numbers that you can see can be easily Googled to identify engine models which can then lead you to specs. Most enthusiasts from that era, including myself, learned the spotting features and enjoy, and take pride in, being able to identify both the common and the rare as seen in the videos. Also, scrolling info at the bottom of the frame is not always possible, and, I believe, often detracts from the scene. My viewers generally seem to prefer my approach. As for specs and spotting features, a good source is Jerry A. Pinkepank's "The Second Diesel Spotter's Guide" (Kalmbach Publishing).

For the most part, heavy tonnage freight runs "left hand" between Cajon and Summit on the compensated 2.2% grade.

A $5.7 Billion graffiti solution. I'll have to give that some serious thought. Serious thought lasted about 8 secs. Conclusion: No less reasonable than any of the other rationalizations given for a wall.

I DO know that a wall won't stop or even slow down graffiti. OR drug and human trafficking at ports-of-entry. OR asylum seekers. OR guest workers overstaying their work visas. OR aliens entering the country by air or by sea. OR unscrupulous employers from hiring undocumented aliens. A wall would be nothing but an Ego Edifice for the Pied Piper of an administration that exploits the whirlpool of the unholy trinity: hate, fear, & ignorance.

Wouldn't bother with the wall. In Australia we've got the painters and taggers on our trains, too. Most of the painters were born here anyway, and unless you're Jesus there's no way you're walking here from anywhere: we're completely surrounded by water, with no land frontiers whatsoever.

AMTRAK Desert Wind can be seen at 20:10 in a grab shot near Thorn. The final scenes are of an ATSF train pulling into SP's W. Colton yard, a relatively rare occurance. I'm sorry that this video disturbed you enough that you felt a need to scream out an insult in all caps.

@@vidwilzvids9587 Thanks for the info👍🏼. A friend of mine worked for NS for a long time he started in the early 80’s and remembers seeing the journal bearing cars and all the maintenance it took to keep them running.
