I work in aerospace, you cannot possibly imagine how limited the industry is by the cost of individual units. Due to overcoming that one major limitation drones as air power will be an ungodly nightmare to deal with sooner rather than later, strategies for dealing with drones will be akin to when tanks first entered the battlefield. All plans must be built around it, we’re seeing the infancy and it’s already crippling a multitude of established traditional tactics.
@georgehh2574

Aerospace products are also usually not in high enough demand that you can roll them off a continuous production line, to reduce labour and transport costs. They require intensive safety checks since they fly above or carry people. Drones are smaller and have fewer parts, so are easier to manufacture. They are in higher demand so can be manufactured continuously if the orders are there. They don't contain passengers and are launched within active warzones, so the safety bar required is much lower, which also saves time and costs.
@GeldUndKokaine-kc1hp
@GeldUndKokaine-kc1hp 6 ай бұрын
@@georgehh2574 yeah, but I would like to note that the demand itself is also limited by the cost. And I can speak firsthand to the fact that not even the current demand is being met by the supply, the supply itself is additionally limited yet again by the initial cost between the somewhat lengthy time between components being made and the final assembly which can be the better part of a year in some cases. That cost is largely a product of the regulation, quality control, and safety standards that you already pointed out however

I think the other interesting thing is that drones are a technology that the little guy can use as well. You don’t need a big industrial base to make them. And the parts necessary are everywhere. The United States has Effectively popularized Isis tactics by using these and much of the drone doctrine is a reaction to Isis and how they did all of this first

The Achilles heel of all drones is the communication link back to the controller. Expect radical improvements in the design of jam-proof, detection-proof and interception-proof communication links as well as on-board AI systems that don't even need a comm link.

Yeah that's their biggest issue as of the moment. One solution Baykar (the producer of Bayraktars) has come up with for now is in the event of connection loss with a drone the auto pilot takes control and returns the drone to the airfield it took off from. Pretty smart.

Another major advantage of small drones is the repair and logistics advantage. You can quickly train up people to 3D print replacement parts rather than wait on high spec, proprietary parts that must be installed by a specialist. You also don't need specialized fuel and storage either, or runways for many drones

One key factor everyone seem to overlook when it comes to drones... Range. My enemy is based 100km away. Even the largest, highest capacity consumer drone will travel 30km max! And that at a low altitude, slow speed and with insignificant payload. So, the size and therefore price of your drone depends ultimately on how close you can afford to be to your enemy. If you're locked in trench warfare or trying to organize raids or hit and run operations or trying to defend a certain installation from approaching attackers, small drones will help you make some impact. That doesn't mean they're more successful or useful than their larger, more capable cousins such as the Reaper or TB2. You can't use one or two engagements as your yard stick when it comes to measuring the success of your drone doctrine. Small consumer drones are working great for Ukrainian soldiers. Turkiye has been effectively using its TB2s armed with small, precise guided bombs in multiple theatres. Other missions best utilize other types of drones. Afterall, you use the equipment suitable to the specifications of the mission. NOT the other way round!

This video reminds me on one thing. In Medieval times warriors were trained how to fight and their attacks were not spectacular, but effective. Not the fancy and jawdropping attack moves were the ones that killed people quickly, but the fast, lame, boring, but effective ones, where you didn't saw exactly what happened, just simply wintnessed someone got wounded and died. Sometimes an experienced fighter managed to kill multiple not so exprienced ones. To me drones looking the same thing. Cheap, not so fency, four propeller thingies with a computer inside and voila, worlds next generation tools of destruction, that not require to sacrifice a human life to take more than ones.

Just a note on larger unmanned ground vehicles, things like an entire squadron of unmanned tanks is unlikely, as they take a lot more punishment and often will need repairs on the fly. You would still need 3-4 guys dedicated to each vehicle, so the likely hood of a large tank battle being purley unmanned seems very unlikely. The there will definitely be plenty of use cases, I find it much more likely that the small to medium sized unmanned vehicles will make the most impact overall.

@@Vexas345 that would be nice if they existed, but most repairs on armoured vehicles are not yet possible with a drone. @@bengutsell Yeah, I don't see things getting any bigger than the ripsaw, and even then I feel there will be a proliferation of smaller ATV sized ground vehicles that will really be the difference, particularly due to the effectiveness of minefields making it an expensive risk to use many larger vehicles if not necessary. Going to be interesting/unnerving to see how the modern battlefield evolves
@danwylie-sears1134
@danwylie-sears1134 6 ай бұрын
Repair drones don't sound plausible, but recovery drones do. Even if you don't drastically reduce the number of personnel needed per 120mm direct-fire main gun, you can drastically increase the survivability for the operator by having them be a couple kilometers back. The command vehicle can have fifty tons of armor, cost fifty million dollars, and get fifty gallons per mile, but that doesn't mean that the vehicle with the main gun has to. (Yes, that's hyperbole.) You can also tolerate a lower standard of reliability, when a mechanical failure doesn't strand any personnel in range of enemy howitzers. As for size, each vehicle will be big enough to do its job. I think that mobile 120 or 125mm firepower will be useful, and it will be uncrewed. That means bigger than a Ripsaw, but closer to Ripsaw size than Abrams. If I were designing the ground forces of the future, I would focus on crew survivability. Machinery is going to keep getting cheaper, and personnel are going to keep getting more expensive. Command vehicles would not only be heavily armored, but also relatively stealthy, with all communications being by line of sight under battle conditions. That means having a large number of data-relay drones. I would also have logistics drones look like command drones with their active stealth systems turned off. (I'm assuming that there will be active stealth systems I haven't thought of or heard of, but the main thing is masking their thermal signatures.) Small arms, 25mm autocannon, main guns, missiles of various sizes, mine clearing -- all of it would be remotely operated, on uncrewed vehicles designed to be relatively attritable and recoverable, rather than heavily armored and highly reliable.

As good as fully automated design revision, manufacturing, deployment and piloting and our technology headstart is likely one one of few conventional paths to a guaranteed drone overmatch if that amount of AI implementation isn't automatically above the arbitrary WMD threshold or too brutal for the no explosive small arms snowflakes.

One other important benefit of the "loyal wingman" concept is that it protects the piloted F-35 from exposing itself to radar. The F-35 is very difficult to pick up on radar until it's weapon's bay is opened. With the loyal wingman being integrated into the F-35's targeting and weapon systems, the F-35 can direct the drone to be exposed instead.
@anydaynow01

Or take the short loiter time F-35 with it's IR signature and meatsack out of it altogether and just fly the stealth drones via satellite link or handshake to a forward air controller who with satellite support can have a better sustained battlefield awareness? Or better yet use the budget to better develop AI drone swarm tech. Making more and better F-35s now is like making a better battleship at the beginning of WWII. If they want to develop it they need to drastically increase loiter times and take the human cockpit out.

With that, a future soldier is not simply a grunt that it used to be, it’s a highly trained and intelligent person capable of learning and handling new technology quickly, as well as being able to analyze all domains of the battlefield as now death can truly come at any moment anywhere

Drones will swing the balance into the offenses favor until the defense (jamming tech) catches up. If you are educated in signal jamming and inventive there is an opportunity around the corner.

It’s actually been the opposite in Ukraine. The mass use of spotter drones has made offense much harder. There is no element of surprise anymore with movements of armored vehicles and tanks. In Ukraine armored columns as soon as they get on the move in open ground are spotted by spotter drones who then send the armored columns GPS coordinates back to manned artillery who then target and take out the armored column. This has happened to Russian and Ukrainian armored columns.

Actually the Houthi's in Yemen are the first to use Unmanned Explosive Boat Drones called Tawfan-1, Tawfan-2, and Tawfan-3 series which have been used by the Houthi navy in the Yemen Civil War since 2015 against the Saudi and Emirati navies operating in the area. Wouldn't be surprised if the Ukrainians got the idea from the Houthi videos you can watch on KZfaq lol.

Dogfighting is no longer a consideration for modern jets, F-16 would beat F-35 because F-35 was not designed for that. All air-to-air fighting happens beyond the line of sight with advanced weaponry. Loyal Wingmen drones fit into that perfectly - they provide extra firepower that is locally operated in comms denied environment.

I could see that in the distant sci-fiy future when ai gets so powerful that they’ll be considered as equals. But unfortunately, even if we do see crazy drone vs drone battles with no human casualties, that’s all it will be…a battle: and whoever has more drones after the battle will use them to carry out the real mission. For example Russia shoots 55 missiles, Ukraine shoots missles in defense, they knock out 51, but 4 get through. The target is people, infrastructure, soilders etc it’s a number game I think what he’s saying is drones are just more cost effective and still deliver the boom. I’d argue it’ll lead to more casualties, not less. I mean imagine Ukraine concedes because they lost the drone war… war will always lead to human suffering, drones are simply a tool

Remote controlled drones of all kinds (air, sea, ground) can be very cost-effective and lower risk tools on front lines or to go far behind them. The next jump for which tech already exists and is quickly ramping in capabilities is autonomous drone swarms that can just get objectives or a set of objectives and coordinate movement patterns and goal/target/objective delegation between each other. Now imagine a few larger remote controlled or autonomous carrier drones that instead of or addition to munitions or explosives carry pods of small, agile and short range suicide drones with just one explosive shape-charge or a small number of charges that can be dropped individually or set off together, getting dropped across a strategically important target like an a key infrastructure point, military base or supply lines. As long as a couple of drone pods make it and deploy near the target, good luck defending against 50-100++ 10g (anti-personel, door/window breakers) - 100g (individual objective neutralizers) range flying high-explosive charges. Maybe even throw in a few 1kg range explosive carrying larger drones as fast followers after the initial wave(s) neutralize softer defenders and barriers to take out reinforced targets. In one way, this may be useful for resource savings for the higher tech industrialized militaries, but the big danger is this increases capabilities of lower funding militaries or non-state actors that may want to carry out offensives that didn't have the economy to support, or larger scale terror attacks.

Takes more then a explosive speed boat to sink a vessel with a well trained crew and comprehensive damage control training. Both of which can't be found in Russia. That being said, it would be a mission kill, which may be just as good.
