My take on 138 is this: Isayama seems to be tackling the question of “Free will vs Determinism.” 1. Whenever Mikasa has a headache, it’s a warning of another possible outcome of the “story.” For example, Armin didn’t inspire Eren to seek freedom; Eren being killed by the human traffickers; Eren gets eaten by a titan in episode 1; Mikasa didn’t join the military along with Eren and Armin, resulting in Eren dying at some point; Eren actually dies after saving Armin in season 1; Eren gets taken away by Reiner; Etc. 2. It is Eren’s "destiny" to be set on the path of seeking freedom by Armin (hinted by season 4 ED “An ocean view, that is the story you started”), start the rumbling, and be killed by Mikasa. If things do not play out according to this, then the timeline will automatically restart. (This could be due to Ymir’s power, or it could just be how “fate” works in the Aot universe.) 3. Whenever Eren does not achieve his "destiny" and the timeline restarts, the dream sequence that Eren will have under the tree is always going to be the last thing that he saw before he died in the previous timeline. For example, if he dies at the hands of the human trafficker, then he’ll probably see the human trafficker choking him out before he wakes up from under the tree again. This means the timeline that we, the audience, are seeing right now is the last timeline, and the second last timeline is the version showcased in 138. Does she want to keep repeating this cycle or does she want to end it? Is it going to be “see you later” once again or a final “goodbye to the boy who sought freedom?” Out of her own free will, Mikasa accepts her fate and kills Eren (Eren too, out of his own free will, accepts his destiny of starting the rumbling), thus freeing the two of them from the endless cycle that they have been enslaved in. I think Eren loves both Mikasa and Historia, just like how Grisha loves both Dina and Carla. But Eren choosing Historia means pushing himself to stay determined and start the rumbling while choosing Mikasa means abandoning everything and just living out his life in peace. Therefore, Eren didn’t say “Mikasa, I have always hated you” only to Mikasa. He is also saying it to himself, as in telling himself, “Eren, you have made your decision to start the rumbling, so you must stay determined to follow through with it.”

I still belive eren is stuck in an endless loop of realities where when he dies he wakes up in a new one and has to keep living over and over. The reason that his charcter has such a drastic change after receiveing his full power is because he sees all those alternate realities and sees that no matter what he does it ends in tragedy so he is trying his best to break free from the shackles of having to live mutiple realities endlessly. My theory: The dream Mikasa had wasn’t actually a dream, but actually the first timeline Eren lived. Because of the guilt and responsibility he put on Historia in this timeline he uses the Attack titan powers to cause the rumbling timeline. I can guarantee ya it’s gonna be a big plot twist, and the only reason I am saying this is because when Mikasa was decapitating Erens head, she smiled , and the fact that she smiled meant that she knew Eren is still not dead cuz she knows something that we don’t know and that will probably be revealed in ch 139. This is my theory, AOT is stuck in a time loop caused by eren and Ymir. Somehow eren knew Ymir or Ymir knew of erens Existence for over 2,000 years. In those time loops each time Marley invaded their home land and each time eren had to start over. That’s how the attack titan know of each holder and it’s future. Since historia/christa is a direct descendant of Ymir she shares her last name and obvious features which make Ymir and Historia look alike. Historia best friend was also named Ymir who she loved and loss so Historia will most likely name her baby after Ymir in Remembrance of her. This was all planned out for 2,000 years. Meaning it’s different world lines and time loops very similar to steins gate. We also seen mikasa experience this in the latest chapter. Meaning eren sole purpose of living was to help Ymir be free and get a redo at life. The world will be at peace with the eldians and they now have come to the realization that racism and discrimination is bad and they will be at peace for at least a century to avoid a major conflict and war like this again. With this Ymir will finally be able to live a free and good life. If this is correct it will definitely split the whole community

Someone brought to my attention that Ymir smiling is in one of Eren’s memory shards. It could mean anything. And since the first chapter was titled " to you, 2000 years from now" it makes me believe it was Ymir who sent that dream to child Eren. He was pretty much destined to free her. Hence why she is smiling.

Seems like doing the rumbling kills maybe three birds with one stone. Eren had to get that centipede thing exposed, destroying the cycle of hatred, and then a new generation of Eldian who isn't a subject to the history's grim reality(the baby thing might be a reincarnation of Ymir)

I have a theory that Mikasa's "AU" is actually just a dream In the "AU", if Eren ran away with Mikasa he wouldn't have gone to PATHS adventures with Zeke. If he didn't go to PATHS adventures with Zeke, he wouldn't have made Grisha do what he did. Reiss family would still be alive and Grisha and Historia would likely be dead. Which contradicts the present story in that AU in the cabin. This makes sense since eren entered her dream at the end that's why he got the future memory as a kid.

She will only leave for those she wants to protect and even with him leaving this time it is far worse....for he is her home...no matter how far he is... The reason I say it was an alternative reality is because for ymir time is not what we see being linear for here it is just another dimension , let me explain it to you , see if you are in a coordinate plane then you can access all the points in that plane , with you being a 3 dimensional being as you can map all the points together similarly Ymir being a fourth dimensional being can do the same about the time for her everything is within reach , the past the future because she can map all the points in a four dimensional mapping system like you can map any point in a 3D space , thus for here any moment in the future is just another point so rather than considering eren getting a memory from other dimensional eren we can consider it as a continuous cycle of one reality after the other reality if you see time as a linear and a loop if you consider time as in other form .
