I completely agree and def did not take this as a personal attack! The reason I'm doing this declutter is because I don't use most of what I have (and a lot of it is SO old), and that makes me sad/uncomfortable/anxious to have a lot of products just sitting there that I never touch. But I absolutely agree. It has become an aesthetic and has become a marketing buzzword for companies to try to get you to "buy into" minimalism, etc. Those Colourpop shadows are years old and I haven't reached for them once in the past year or so; this is my way of being more conscious about the items I actually reach for vs. just keeping stuff b/c I might use it one day in the future, ya know? I think it's more responsible to give something half-used away to someone who WILL finish it before it goes bad, vs. me keeping it for a day that may never come and then it going bad and being wasted without ever being finished or used. I promise I am extremely conscious of where my makeup goes when I'm done with it (whether it's given to a friend/family member, sent to Project Beauty Share, recycled curbside or if I send it to a specific Terracycle recycling box). But absolutely agree that as a society and as a community on YT as a whole, we need to be more conscious of our blind spending and consumerism. I really loved Kimberly Clark's video on consumerism, have you watched that? She somehow has a way of being hilarious and totally on point with her topics all at the same time. Also--hope you didn't take this as me being defensive about anything. I really am very conscious of my carbon footprint in my daily life, so wastefulness and overconsumption really does get to me, and I hope to find a way to work my otherwise low-waste lifestyle into this YT channel too. Super open to any video suggestions you may have, because I was brainstorming the other day how to kinda make this channel more in line with my own ethics and beliefs vs just "here's a review of some corporation's new lip set that you should buy! here's me doing free marketing for them!" LOL. Anyway, /rant over and I SUPER SUPER appreciate you leaving this thoughtful comment and I appreciate your feedback so much. @nikibowe I definitely agree to an extent. I think one problem that's not often talked about is this mythical notion of a "perfect, curated makeup collection", and also how FOMO plays into it. Trying to curate a small collection can actually turn into buying more for some people because they're searching for the best, most perfect makeup products.

Absolutely agree! I get really overwhelmed and stressed out when I have a bunch of products just sitting there that I don't use. and a lot of this stuff is like... super old LOL. But I totally agree with you. Toni Brown What i recommend is multitasking with products - have a blush you like but don’t wear? Use it as eyeshadow! Especially cream products - they’re great for multitasking (blush - eyeshadow, blush, lip color. Highlighter - highlighter, eyeshadow, lip highlight. Bronzer - bronzer, eyeshadow, lip color). I love using my products in many ways!

AMEN. It's weird because I'm so low-waste in my everyday life and it makes me sad that my makeup and skincare routine is not. So I hope to get there one day. But I agree, it seems like every declutter I do it's easier to part with things. And seeing the joy on my friends and family's faces when I give them like-new products that they will love and use (vs. it sitting there and rotting in my cabinet) is soooo amazing. Any tips you have or things you've learned from your minimalism journey that you can share?

Honestly I try to make a minimalism mix. I try to do a little of “the minimalists” + “goodbye things from Fumio Sasaki” and “Marie Kondo’s method of organization”. I follow some personal rules so I can keep on track. For example, if I buy something new, it means I need to throw something else away/sell/give. Like an exchange, to prevent me from accumulating and keeping the equilibrium. Secondly, if I open my closet, drawer etc and I’m not able to see everything I have in that compartment, it means I still have too much stuff. I take the “spark joy” from Marie Kondo when decluttering and I ask myself if I really need that item, or if I just want it, but don’t need it (Fumio Sasaki explains this matter really well). Once in a while I repeat the minimalism game, because it helps me go through my stuff and revise my belongings and improve my declutter. I’ve also done some digital declutter. I’ve cleaned my e-mail and unfollowed distracting Facebook pages or groups I just wasn’t using anymore. I’ve organized my photos and I always, always, take photos of the items I let go - that way, I can always remember them and I won’t feel bad for giving away a sentimental item, because I have a photograph that will remind me that someone special offered me that item. It somehow makes it easier to let go... I feel it is not ok to keep something just because it was a gift or because it was expensive or because it was one of those shopping maximalism opportunities, because we end up not using them at all. If we think it through, those items will remain folded, forgotten in the back of the drawer, and they won’t be used. And maybe there’s someone that would love one of those items and would be happy to receive it. Why not give it to that person? It will give purpose to that item and it will make that person happy. I know it is hard. I’ve tried to explain the benefits of minimalism and explain to my family and friends how much it changed my life and made me happier, but they don’t quite understand this...I think one can only understand by trying. I feel you when you talk about your makeup and skincare! What I try to make is selling the eligible items that I know I really don’t love, give away those I don’t have an interest in anymore and throw away the expired ones even though sometimes we feel it is a waste throwing them in to the garbage. To prevent accumulating a lot of skincare and makeup I try to only have a maximum number of each category and I try really really hard not to buy new items without ending the ones I have at home first. I used to buy lipstick colors I wanted to use, but I never had that event or that party where that lipstick color would be suitable. So, now, I buy more realistically - I only acquire what I really love, what I know I will certainly use and good quality stuff. I prefer having 1 luxury item than 4 poor quality items that are not making me happy and that are maybe damaging my skin. Right now I’m facing the food decluttering challenge. It really is a journey, it requires patience and perseverance. I really recommend you reading the e-book from Fumio Sasaki, it helped me a lot! There are no rules in minimalism, there are no maximum number of belongings...There is the minimalism you feel comfortable with and that is the one that will bring you happiness and piece...If you are worried then you will figure it out 🦊🧡

YES YES YES to everything you said! I don't like the trash-everything-all-at-once approach. Not only is it wasteful, but I think going from having so much to having nothing makes a person want to buy more. My goal is to get rid of things I don't use without replacing them with other things I don't use (if that makes sense? lol). And it's crazy how doing it gradually you realize what you want to keep and what you don't want to keep. Something I thought i HAD to keep in my May '19 declutter, I look at now and I'm like "hell nah this is DEF going in the declutter pile!" You can spot clean with a spray bottle of alcohol on a face washer or towel - if you do that you don't really need more than of the same brushes. Maybe even only one? I'm also trying to only keep my favourite item from every category - so one bronzer, one blush, one concealer, etc. I can always make do with what I have .

How weird! ND shouldn't crease for the price they charge for it LOL. At least we got it in beauty boxes! I have oily lids so I always use the UD primer potion and then I set it with some regular skin tone eyeshadow, and then I put ND on top. You could try the UD setting spray too before or after you use the shadow to help it stay in place ❤️

When I finished my last tube of they're so real I washed and kept the brush because the ball end makes its so useful for applying other mascaras especially in the corner or lower lashes.

If things have meaning and make you happy, that's good. Minimalism is just about getting rid of the excess clutter weighing you down. Cream blushes are annoying sometimes b/c they can be so thick (and I don't want to disrupt the sunscreen I'm wearing underneath), but the Cloud Paint is so liquidy and nice I just pat it on with my beauty blender. I find a lot of Glossier products to be super overhyped, but this is the ONE product from them I have (and will continue to) repurchase over and over :) hope that helps ❤️

Yep, they do! It's hard. I try to collect items for recycling in categories, and if they can't be recycled curbside (like mascara, for example), in the past i've tried to locate places that have the personal beauty Terracycle box that does in fact take old mascara tubes to recycle :)
