Attempting to "fix" my Land Cruiser LX470's AHC suspension system.

Like all LX470s, mine came from the factory with Toyota's AHC hydraulic suspension system. Many 100 series Land Cruiser aficionados say to remove the system and put in place a simpler shock and spring system, whether it be stock parts from a Land Cruiser that was not optioned with the AHC system, or aftermarket springs and shocks that provide a lift, or higher resting position for the suspension. My LX470 was not going into high mode, but was able to move from low to neutral without issue. Upon inspection it was discovered that the AHC fluid was low, and I decided to attempt to add fluid to see if the system will then allow it to go into high mode.

If you press the brake pedal for more than 5 seconds, and then attempt to raise the AHC into HI, it will not do so. If you are in park, don’t press the brake pedal, just set the height. It is a safety procedure the system has

Hey. yea it is healthy- just low on fluids. When you turn off key and closes door, the computer resets the globe. That’s why it works fine after you restarted it

Great video ! I recently bought UZJ100 from Japan with 170,000 Kilometers and inspected one front and one rear shocks is weeping/leaking . The car AHC is working as it’s going high and low. Do I need to change the accumulators or just replace the shock absorbers ? And also do I need to change the coil springs ? Your advice will be really appreciated

The first thing I'd check is to see if there is any fluid in the reservoir. If there is, I wouldn't just start throwing parts at it. Check out ih8mud.com. There is a ton of technical information in there on 100s.

Maybe I missed something but are your passenger side tires parked on the grass making them higher than the driver side? I would think that with that amount of functionality you should see everything working if this test was done on level ground or at least with all 4 tires on the same surface, right? I apologize in advance if I missed something in the video or in the comments.

It could! I’ve found it seems to work best when rolling slowly. It sometimes works standing still, but not always.

How is your ride? Do you still have the factory accumulators on or did you change them out for new ones?
@doublejslist
@doublejslist 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I can tell, (I have most of the original records) they are original, and it rides pretty good. It’s a little rough over small stuff, but big bumps and potholes feel the same as the little stuff.

@@doublejslist gotcha, I just replaced all my globes and flushed all new fluid in. Mine had 166K on it. One globe was totally compromised. Fluid was dark brown like beer haha

Is/was the ride also "bouncy"? When the tank went empty, air most likely entered the system. Please update what you found.

@doublejslist

I had a little dampness on the left rear shock. I think that's where the fluid was going very slowly.

Can you drive it if the suspension is all the way down because it's broken?
@doublejslist

I believe you can, but it will be really unpleasant and probably do harm over time. It will crash over bumps, the driveshafts will be at weird angles and IMO it will look odd.

I found I have a weird problem with my AHC suspension system yesterday. The front suspension were on neutral, and the back ones were on low and the Hight control was on neutral all the time. The front suspensions have no problem going neutral, low, or high but the rear ones are staying at low. The ride was very bumpy and very weird. has that ever happened with you?

I never really understood the purpose in this system. What is it for? I can see adjusting height for different driving conditions, but what is the sense in changing the height position and then putting the truck into drive and going over 20mph and it going back to 'neutral' position? What is the point?? Am I totally missing something? I want mine to stay in low forever unless I get stuck in snow. But no. Total waste of time in my opinion....
@doublejslist
@doublejslist 4 жыл бұрын
Dmann 816 I believe the theory behind it is that a majority of off-roading that requires an elevated ride height would be traveling less than 20 mph. I do wish I could put it in high and drive around, but it does ride a bit better in the neutral setting. Also, according to the owners manual, there’s a super-high mode that automatically engages when you suspension is in high, the transfer case is in low, and it senses all four wheels spinning. The theory behind that is it will give you an extra 60mm to help you get out of being high-sided. Quite frankly, I like it a lot and will be bummed when something breaks and I have to swap over to a traditional setup for cost reasons.

It’s definitely for off road driving. A lot of professional backcountry guide services and overlanders seek out these LX’s for the additional clearance allowed by the air suspension. No one is going to go over 10mph in the terrain where this is needed. You can walk faster in those sections. I did over 500 mikes of desert driving in SW Utah / AZ last year. I used the lift system daily. It’s not intended for daily driving.
