The Birdman Rally is one of Melbourne’s craziest events - where participants build their own home-made flying machines to try and fly across the Yarra River. It’s a highlight of Moomba Festival each year, and this is the inside story of what it takes to become a Birdman.

The guy-wires needed to be below the wings rather than above to prevent the wings from folding the way it did. But I doubt if it would’ve made much difference - to an already brilliant effort! Love all your videos… always a happy and soothing vibe in the way you speak. Uplifting and much needed in these trying times. 👍🏻

@@dexa6623 What I meant was that for a large portion of Melbourne's population "Lets get together and have fun" is synonymous with "up ya bum" but yes there is also the whole woke lefty aspect of asking Aboriginal people for a word (because they care so much about Aboriginal people) and then having the reply be a complete joke and being too thick and insular (because they don't REALLY care, they just want to APPEAR that they do) to do any sort of verification and just running with it. It's Melbourne on multiple levels.

@@dexa6623 Nobody REALLY cares bro, people are just generally selfishly motivated. The best that you can hope for is that people will leave you alone to live your life as you see fit. Those people are the ones generally referred to as on the "right". The "left" are the ones that pretend to care while they're busy trying to regulate your behavior. Whatever you prefer is up to you. I'd prefer to be sincerely left alone as opposed to being herded into a prison camp under the umbrella of fake concern for my welfare.

@@iwishilivedinafreecountry5749 Mate, I think you need to learn a bit more about politics and the treatment of First Nations people. The right is often trying to take indigenous human rights, our babies, and culturally significant land and landmarks. The issue is that the left doesn't care enough to fight for us unless it gets them publicity.

Some time in the 80's I spotted some college mates at the birdman rally, hadn't seen these old faces in a while so went over to greet 'em, and see what they had going on. One of 'em had brought a hanglider but wasn't willing to try it. They seemed kind of squirrely about something, like maybe 'sure' meant 'no way'. But I was encouraged to try, if this was a mixed signals thing (the owner was a friend of a friend), he confirmed his okay after inquiries was made, word came the judge mighta gave the attempt an okay, and I was okay with trying since the homies were no-takers balking at the altar: so I had a go at hang gliding. I was a natural btw. Then they produced a project thing that looked like maybe a tub or something with wings. I rly only remember it dropped like a stone... into the heavy rope netting about 15 feet down or something, mighta been a sprain ..again I dunno. There was a cash prize for reaching X distance, I actually came pretty close, the decision went up to the judge. But a toe had skimmed the water, a short way along the total distance I actually travelled, before my feet got in the hammock cradle thing. I recovered out of a nosedive, and only got a level glide plane going just above the water. Levelled out, the thing just kept gliding along which surprised everyone. Me included. Up till the verdict came back, I honestly thought I might have won something - recalling the toe skim I realised this rebuff was alright. The crowd had really wanted me to win too. My effort was the furthest anyone had got that day, maybe in years. First time in a hang glider, the only time too. Fun though.

we used to have them to here in the Netherlands even two versions. called [first in Dutch and than a translation] ''Ter land, ter zee en in de lucht'' or By land, by sea or in the air. and the simpler version named ''ter land en ter zee'' (by land and sea) with the aim to get a amphibian contraption that could continue long enough to get you across the ramp and then the water until you could ring a bell. most contraptions would have had luck if they could pass the ramp part even.
