Video Game Themes. They tend to be themes in video games. Crazy fact, I know. I've said a load of things about video game themes already, but it's pretty interesting to hear how trans-formative they are, due to the melodies that accompany some of them. Sometimes a theme is so memorable (and possibly iconic) that it can transcend genres/styles and still stay true to what it originally was, giving listeners the same feeling it was intended to give. (Some non-video game songs can do this too by the way). Take an iconic video game song, turn it into 8-bit, make it a beatsaber level, create a rock version of it, or even make a Mario Paint version and you can guarantee there will be someone who vibes with it. Speaking of Mario Paint, it was HUGE for covers back in the day. I would binge watch so many of them when I was a young teen (a smol shady who knew nothing about music composition yet). I always wondered how they made these themes on Mario Paint. Now I'm finally at a stage where people are requesting me to try it out, so here's me trying to make an original video game theme with it. This is "Attempting to Make a Video Game Theme with Mario Paint in One Night". I hope you enjoy! This song was inspired by the Mario games (duh), various JRPG themes, and a little bit of Undertale/Deltarune.
The program in this video is "Mario Paint Composer". The original site has been down for who knows how long. Just look around for a bit and you'll find it.

Technically he made a VI-VII-i progression in A natural minor (with a III to resolve) but yeah, it does start on a major chord. An F chord to be more precise. It can also be interpreted as C major but once you get to the verse it basically confirms that it's Am with the i-VI progression.

I imagine he probably learnt how to make music in a similar way to how I've been learning to make art Lots and lots of trial and error in early years and eventually learning what works and what doesn't from that experience (From what i can tell he've been doing music for years now)

@@dustinm2717 Yeah, even though he hasn't officially learned music theory his songs mostly follow basic concepts found in music theory. It's probably because as you said over years of making music by ear he has got a sense of what sounds good and what isn't so it's kind of like he has discovered his own version of music theory.

@@beezzinha I know a guy who had trouble creating anything other than horror music because that was most of what he listened to. I dont know if that means anything to you, but maybe one thing you could try is listening to a bunch of music for the genre that you're aiming for and then going for it !

The time put into each song might be a factor. Also, experience. Last time I made a song (that also happened to be in Mario paint lol) I'd come up with some smallish things to add to it every day, where this guy made a (probably longer I didn't check) song in one entire night - in general everyone gets faster with things as they gain more experience

I think this is one of the only original songs that I've heard actually composed on Mario Paint Composer. The rest are usually covers. Its actually kinda amazing what you can create using this app.

i actually used Mario Paint Composer as a starting point for composing original music! the limitations imposed by the program encourage finding creative workarounds, and offer a good starting point for people w/basically no knowledge of musical theory or composing. for me, as a little kid interested in making something musical, it was a formative experience. in my teen years i started using the more 'advanced' version of the program called 'Advanced Mario Sequencer', and began composing more elaborate musical pieces and toying around with things such as soundfonts; and around last year, after a longer break from proper composing, i started using FL Studio, which caused the quality and speed of my music production to increase basically tenfold lmao personally, i'm never coming back to either of the Mario Composer programs, but i do look fondly on the times when these programs were my main tool of production. in my experience, the main reason the MPC covers of various songs get more attention than original pieces are because 1) the covers are already well-known songs, 2) they're usually much more expertly crafted than most original compositions on the program, and 3) although there are highly-skilled original composers in the the MPC community (which has been in deep decline for a long while now), their numbers are few and their kind of work is very niche, as most prefer far less limiting and more versatile programs.

Köokaburra the Kingfisher I will agree that MPC's limitations do make for some interesting music puzzles. I've actually made my first original Mario Paint Composer arrangement last month. And I would like to see more original MPC arrangements from time to time.

Do it! Weaving together story, music, art and programming together starts to take on a life of its own at some point. You'll start to find you're writing leitmotivs into your artwork, and dashing your programs with some extra shine, and creating that sick drop in your storylines, while your music plays out a story that couldn't be told by words. Take it from me; when it all starts playing together, the whole thing will become self-inspiring. It's the best feeling ever.
