Oh man - I had to create a new access hatch in the hallway of my 1960 house, because the original was in a small closet and had a roof truss above it and offset 250 mm from the center line, meaning you had to be a contortionist to get into the roof space. Add in the typical shallow-pitch roof of these Kiwi houses and the only place you can sit upright is in the middle. Every time I have to go into the roof space (upgrading the existing lights to recessed LEDs), I am forever thankful I did this 14 years ago!

Very cool Scott, we have an old house with a nice high roof Apex and I'm going to sus out using a part of it as a loft. Really will depend on what's there. But being on the end of the house it won't have power, water or air conditioner vents. Really like your channel as it's down to Earth and non-carpenters like myself can follow along easily.

Use white, LED Christmas lights in the attic space. It will distribute the lighting more evenly, be a lot cooler, and take up less space as you can staple them to the peak areas of the attic space and you will never have to replace them. You can get them on clearance, the day after clearance at our nearest department store.

Yellotongue slots together. This means if you ever have to take one board out to access cables you have to take out every board on the tongue side of that board too. The other thing is plywood is cheap in NZ compared to yellowtongue.

I'd presume because people are going to be walking on the plywood and overtime it would squeak and come lose by the nails, especially with the heat up in the attic, screws just make it stronger and bite on more?

Or get out to cut some decking ends off etc. So I dont mind it being corded.... and i use it most of the time with a vacuum that is plugged in and it plugs to the vacuum anyway. Was hiding roof access in cupboards a trend in NZ in the 90s or something? Getting into our roof space is via a hidden hole like that, except its put right at the edge of the house so you have to go up & bend lest you want to scone your head on the roof going up. Suffice to say I went up once, and haven't bothered going up again ;-)
