In New Zealand 36,000 people suffer a traumatic brain injury every year. The most common cause is falls, followed by accidents. The most severe go to ABI Rehabilitation where a team of experts support people with brain injuries back into the community.
Terry is learning to walk and starting to recall what happened to him. Eltje is preparing to go home. Fifteen year-old Jarrod was playing basketball when he collapsed and had a heart attack. He survived, but because his brain was starved of oxygen he must learn to talk, read and write once again.

Paulina Turek and here I am to get my inspiration again. I am not doing well. My malrotated kidney is giving me more problems than I can count. So very excited though... I’m about to go to Cleveland Clinic! I have EDS VEDS and possibly Nutcrackers Syndrome with SMAS and Pelvic congestion issues. Many doctors looked at me like I was nuts. Over and over fighting insurance and trying to get a doctor that would test me and also listen to me. I got my EDS tests! And yes I was right!!!!!! Now with my kidney I deny pain medication because I’d rather live in horrible pain than to be looked at as a pain pill chaser. I’m not playing around anymore and if a doctor like my X Nephrologist that told me impossible and wouldn’t even touch my kidney... or listen to my history. Fired! Finally got my urologist appointment after 6moths of seeing my GP he was shocked when he heard the nephrologist would not recommended a urologist and told me impossible. I told him he was fired and I never care to see him. If he would please please send me to a urologist or I’ll find another GP. Well I finally got the appointment and waited 3 months for that. He listened and knew where my “transverse malrotated kidney is!” Under my left ribs. It’s twisted and only has one area where it filters my uttter goes around my kidney and I’ve had an 11.9 a 5.7 and a 8.2 mm kidney stones all calcium. The other kidney has never had any. I told him I have a problem with drainage and I have spasms. I don’t have an oxalate problem! This is related to my EDS and VEDS and I need help! Please! Gave him the full rundown and after he listened I do need surgery and I very well could have Nutcrackers Syndrome with digestion issues and pelvic congestion, especially since my kidney was where it was and rotated! This woman got me motivated to stop reevaluate and not be pushed around by doctors! She gave me a push of determination! I needed that! Because my body is failing me and life is passing by! I’m a happy good spirited person. And have my nutrition in check. And that I would say helps with my positive outlook. Yet over and over I get pushed aside and I just was upset 😡 with our medical society! I even said to the Nephrologist when I left. You may have spent thousands of hours and dollars on your knowledge but I am a rarity that you could learn from yet you mock me but you think I’m lying. I simply got up and said your fired. I’ll see my GP. Yay! My appointment for Cleveland Clinic is in 2 weeks! I’m over the moon! And in bad need of their help! It’s really hard when you want to do something and have the mind to do it but cannot. If I’m on my feet for 6 hours. I’m in bed for 4 days. It’s so annoying! Who wants to live with left side constant pain! From my kidney to my pelvic. Walking is a nightmare! On top of my subluxations and brushing and joint problems... and more... Omgoodness it’s awful! This gem of a woman, put a fire under my bottom and gave me inspiration to get this done! To all those Dr.’s that didn’t believe me... I could say something nasty... yet... the universe will show them one day. They will have a patient and they will be way wrong again... and know this... oh yes. Life has a way of handing back what we put out! So I wish them well! 🤔😀🧐🙌🏻✌🏻🖐🏻

Khaledyah In this case it's the icy water. It's slows down the metabolic rate. Almost allowing the cells to stay in a suspended stable state. Her age also. The younger the person is the healing of the brain as the brain grows with new pathways and electrical connections within the stimulation of the Vagus Nerve is key to healing better than others with the same injury. Plus it's all how we are wired together. Genetics plays a role within this process, and how the body processes nutrients too. Someone with the MTHFR gene would have a difficult time with methylation. Which can affect the process of die of of toxins and the body accumulating to many toxins. Many roles play within the healing of the brain and nervous system. Diet helps immensely too along with immediate rehabilitation. I'm so impressed with this rehabilitation center. They are spot on within their therapy of working with them right away once the body stabilizes. Warms my heart! Hope your day or eve has been good to you 😉✌🏻💚

Attitude I'm so grateful her whole-story that has been shared. Some documentaries will explain a persons life and the difficulties of their experience in path and it ends. Not knowing how they are or what has happened drives me to search for them and to finish out their story. It's like reading a really good book only to find the rest of the chapters are nothing more than white pages, and the book became a special print book or hard to find. No ISBN can help if there isn't an original copy. 🤔😥😑 So thanks dearly for this next chapter. Seeing her determination and her will to heal along with all others within this series chapter is so inspiring and rewarding to witness. Her will feeds my heart and soul! I hope she is doing well. I feel she has inspired many others that have watched this documentary. How amazing is that?! One man or woman's suffering leading and inspiring others within the ups and downs of their own lives. To me, it's... Pure magic!!!

Gratitude is a living memory, which perhaps will even be the strongest help for her recovery. Appreciating what she has instead of grumbling about what she had… her friend by her side, a team that is encouraged by her motivation and a desire to overcome ‘disability’ are certainly good reasons to be grateful.

Attitude: I saw you uploaded this in 2016. I hope people continue to view this. As someone who suffered a brain injury this brought tears to my eyes. I hope all of you people in the video get better and better. I thought I made a full recovery after a fall, but deep down I know that's not true. There are some things I have absolutely no memory of. When someone mentions things I can't remember, when I should remember them, I have started to write them down. This is when I realised how different I am to before. I have no memory whatsoever of my youngest son's Christening, for example. Unless somebody mentions certain things I can't be sure if I've forgotten them or not. That's Catch 22 and kind of crazy! I can't remember some people either, I mean we all have problems sometimes recognising a face, but it's really embarrassing and I find myself having to apologise. People can't comprehend that you've just completely forgotten them and they say it's impossible because we knew one another pretty well. I have to make my excuses and leave because it's dreadful having to explain. It's the sort of thing that happens at the beginning of films.

@vickythefist7062 Hiya Vicky, thank you so much for your reply. I often think nobody cares, and then you yourself, as well as one other person completely unknown to me, restore my faith in humankind. Kind if the right word, because this is pure, unadulterated kindness. To wish me all the very best and make life-affirming comments to boot - well that's so much appreciated. I'm British too, although the accident happened overseas. It brought me back here where I was finally diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN2) -also known, you're probably aware, as the Suicide Disease. The pain was so bad I went for x-rays to check I hadn't broken my neck. Honestly, you don't know how much both of your comments have given me an uplift. I have that second chance, but for a long while I was lost. People's attitudes didn't help, because it was undiagnosable for so long there were some that thought I was just mad - well, there's no other way to put it. Please know how much your words have affected me in a really good way. You must have a really kind heart. If everyone were the same, the world would be a much better place. Grateful isn't enough of a word to describe how much you've elevated my mood and thankfulness. Bless you, you're a real sweetheart. In return to your comment, and without wishing to sound creepy, I send you some love. From Jonathan

@@hippodagogo Hello hippodagogo. I read: "your comment has given me the encouragement I need!" I would gather from reading this that you too have suffered from an injury and I thank you for your prayers - something that I do all the time is say my prayers and thank the Lord. I don't know what your situation is or what you've been diagnosed with, but I've started to write a book about my own experience which has as its major goal the idea to help others. If it's TM as a result of trauma it's very hard to diagnose. Head injuries are catastrophic, and the worst thing is people can't tell, but sooner or later you give it away one way or another - after you've been accused of being drunk, or on drugs, or just plain stupid. I don't comment often, and seldom read the comments, but please read my other reply because when I say your words help me, like you've said to me, that my comment has given you encouragement, then I'm indebted to you both . I hope you get well, or get better, just knowing we're not in this horrible situation alone is a help- to me, at least. I send you some love, just as I did to vickythefist, because with more of it to go around, we would all benefit.

Thank you for these videos. My son has a TBI from August 16, 2009. It's very hard for people to understand how different life is afterwards. My son hasn't improved as much as these folks but it goes a long way toward educating the public. I would like to have seen a bit more about the rage part of the injury but as has been communicated, every TBI is different. I'm only half way through Part 3 but I also hope there will be more focus on the tole TBI takes on the caregiver. Thank you for bringing this to light.

Fantastic video! It's interesting to see how health systems in other countries work compared to here in the USA. An injury like this has the potential to bankrupt you in this country. These families are SO lucky they don't have to worry about getting help from friends/family, selling their home or having a fundraiser to come up with lots of $$ to pay for all the things your health insurance doesn't/won't cover and the massive hospital bills that will result from treating a TBI. Now that's a video that people who don't live in the USA should see.

Bless all of you at Headway in the UK. I had TN2 after an accident and the worst thing was it was never diagnosed. At least Headway rang me up and spoke to me. I had nobody to talk to and my doctor thought I just had depression. From what my friend told me and explained to me about his symptoms he had Trigeminal Neuralgia at the same time. He was never diagnosed and even told Mental Health Services "I feel like throwing myself off a bridge." (A matter of record.) He succeeded on his second attempt at suicide a few days later.

I see there are 2 dislikes here. why?? well to them I say this. before you go and dislike anything like this, imagine this was you living like this with a very serious brain injury, all the trauma, all the pain, probably memory loss due to your injury, all the hurt not being able to do any sport, not being able to do anything you loved to do before all this happened. just imagine it. how would you feel?? how would your family feel?? I would imagine they would be worried, very worried. They would know you would need help for the rest of your life most likely. My friend was in a very serious car accident and yes he suffered a very bad brain injury. I know he will be like this, the way he now is till the day he dies.... He cant help it the way he is. He used to be so much into football but sadly he now cannot play it no more as a sport, as a result of his brain injury he endured.

My mom (she’s 50 years old) just suffered a massive stroke , 02/11/18 Neurologist said it was equivalent to having 20 smalls strokes all at one time. they thought she wouldn’t be here and she’s proving every one wrong GOD HAS THE FINAL SAY ! she’s in rehab now so only God and time can heal! i’m watching this for comfort and to get some more knowledge on how I can help her!

Why do they wear the gloves and gowns? Even the family? It's not like brain injury is contagious but they obviously do it for a good reason but I have no idea why.

I think it was a huge mistake that the doctor told her that he thought she wouldn’t cycle again not like she did she might be able to do a 3 wheel or modified bike. Honestly the only thing that’s gotten her this far is her hope for her independence back and the hope that she will cycle once again which is the love of her life. The doctor taking that hope away is the dumbest thing ever even if it might be true or it’s his opinion that’s what will happen, it’s not worth taking away the Indy love of her lie she has and the one thing giving her the hope and courage to drive herself forward. I mean if he thinks she won’t ride again on a normal bike I;s like for him to think about what level her brain injury was it is the one that they rarely see anyone come back from but she’s fought her way back with the motivation, hope, and love for cycling they need to keep that hope alive within her.

It's strange how they didn't seem to do any sort of Walking at all with Eltje? My spidey senses are telling me she may have over-stepped the mark a little by saying she wants x, and y, and z! I know from my own personal experience, medical professionals do not like being told what to do!! :D Of course my theory may be totally wrong. Perhaps it was just that she didn't need much assistance in terms of re-learning to walk, or maybe it was just that we didn't get to see those parts.

People mourn what they think they would have had in life but in reality it's not what they actually would have. The documentries show strong people. Calamities empower those who think with reason. The documentry shows empowered people not "Broken" as the title ignotrantly suggests. Calamities are a very powerful and unique way to get closer to Allah.
