I was actually a cook on the Blueback in the 80s. Thanks for the fond memories. Accuracy was close enough for government work as far as the food service goes, but thanks. I enjoyed your tour.

Very cool! I'm curious. The tour said there was no cardboard boxes allowed on the boat. I had a person comment that was was not a true statement. Did you guys have cardboard on board?

Yes we did. We were suppose to limit it, but the food that did not fit in the storage room shelves did go on the decks in berthing(were the men slept) on the deck in boxes.

I can remember the deck through the whole berthing section just #10 cans with a rubber matt on them. Good times, then when you were looking for something (a can) in the dark (berthing was always dark) trying not to wake anyone up.

Fascinating video! I've done the tour of this sub and regularly kayak the Willamette river. I sometimes paddle up to the Blueback and tap the hull with my paddle to freak out the tourists inside. One ping only...

Likely that most wouldn't know what your action represents. That is funny though! Had very good days in PH.

Actually, the torpedo room was one of the best places to sleep. Torpedoes don't like heat, so it was kept 15-30 degrees colder. So in the end, you could get a good A/C by sleeping in the torpedo room.

I don't know if they show it on the tour but there were 2 racks (1 on each side) outboard the torpedo racks, best on the boat.

Amazingly the nuclear version, the Skipjack class, wasn't much longer, an extra section contained the reactor, the turbines replaced the diesels, and the George Washington class ballistic missile sub was a Skipjack, which was a nuclear Barbell, with the 100 foot extension for the 16 missile tubes for the Polaris missile. The 360 foot GW class were the length of a modern Virginia class. If you think a Barbell was cramped, the nuclear boats had a lot more crew to accommodate, over 100.

The USS George Washington was created from the hull of the original USS Scorpion which was well along in its construction at the time the first SSBN's were authorized. Until her decommissioning the Washington had a placard in the forward escape trunk that read "USS Scorpion SSN-589". Another fun fact, all Skipjack class boats after that 'split' had a small area immediately aft of the SONAR shack with a placard that read "Missile Control". Both pieces of trivia were part of the qualification process on both boats. I never road the Washington but I did ride the Snook (SSN-592).

They added a 130’ section for missile compartment (test depth 1300’) and the bow and stern had a test depth of 700’ that’s ok as the escape trunks are torpedo (forward) room and engine (aftest most) Room Missile compartment frame numbers M-1 thru M-43 forward frame of Reactor compartment frame 44 (not M-44 just 44) and 598s were 398’ long

The person looking thru the periscope decides what the ship is so you can lookup the mast height and using the horizontal lines determine the range of the target ship with the stadimeter built into the periscope

Trim controls on my 2 boats were the trim pump and opening and closing valves to determine where the water came from and discharged to example pump 1000# from forward trim to after trim or flood aux 2 from sea 2000# Auxiliary tanks were usually midships and could be used for hovering

Imagine wearing skivvies (130 degrees) while in engine room while on station in southeast Asia, and a Pea Coat (34 degrees) while surface in high northern waters.

No cardboard? We started every patrol with 2 deck passage lined with boxes. Being over 6 feet, I had to walk down there nearly bent over for a couple of weeks. (Ex RN).

I’m sorry to hear this. I have never served on a sub. I was Navy Air crew. We did talk to the subs using a VLF transmitter. (Love the family grams). Anyway, I was only repeating the information that was passed out in the tour. If the information about cardboard is incorrect, I will bring it up the next time I take the tour.

I saw the plaque for the Mark 14 torpedoes and thought, "Oh, crap. Worst torpedoes ever." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_14_torpedo Except for the early WWII German ones. Actually it was kind of a tie, and for the same reasons. Designed, built, and never properly tested.
