Ultimate 4x4, part 4
In this fourth episode of My Ultimate 4x4 I race-test my tire and wheel choice, which is four Kenda Bearclaw HTR tires, (all 25x8x12), bolted to 12x6 Keizer Beadlock Wheels (Front: 5+1 offset, Rear: 4+2 offset) , and I talk with XC1 4x4 Pro Jordan Phillips, who runs my exact same tire and wheel set up.
This is part 4 of my new “Ultimate 4x4” video series. From cross country racing, GNCC competition, work-duties in the yard, trail-riding with buddies to a 4000 mile coast-to-coast trip on the Trans American Trail - I'm doing it all with my 2020 Yamaha Grizzly!

Made a similar project....albeit...more on a budget, with my 2014 BruteForce 750. Its amazing what some mods do to these 4x4s. I did Elka stage 3's, Rox handlebar setup, Tusk Bighorn copy tires and clutching.

I feel ya, but then again I also predicted Trump would get the most votes in US history and win 48 states, (actually he very well may have). Who knows, I could be way wrong and RV prices will go even higher, nothing surprises me anymore.

I have a 2019 KingQuad 750 with Kenda Bearclaw HTRs. I originally wanted a Grizzly but they never go on sale, happy with my KingQuad though.

Thanks for writing. Yeah the TAT ride is still a go, but I've been racing a sport quad and an eMTB in the GNCC series, I figure I need to get that out of my system first before I'm too old to do it. This will probably be my last year racing and I'll ride across the country next year.

Bearclaw HTR are great overall. Just keep air pressure I would say 5 or even 4 psi. They are little skittish on slippery rock when air pressure higher. They steer like they are on rails at speed. In snow with lower air pressure they stay on top of snow pretty well. I worked them hard on everything with my 650 outlander.

great info. thanks. I think I agree, I was running 8 pounds (scared of a flat), I thought they were perfect, but went down a little and they were even better. I'll probably compromise this year at 6 or 7, I'm not planning on any run-flat protection, so more air I think I'm less likely to get a flat.

Great work proving “seasoned” technology is still relevant and that new isn’t always better! Question on your wheel offsets… it may just be the camera angle but could you have gone a half inch wider and still kept the rubber flush with the fenders? I just bought 2 Grizzlies and want to ditch the tractor tires and run your setup. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay. I squared up from the floor, and yes the tire is inside the fender by exactly one half inch, both front and rear.

I'm only 10 minutes in but have to say that I agree with your setup completely. I don't know yet if you mentioned it but you've also reduced unsprung weight which is a good deal for your components as well as acceleration. Whatever you've lost in contact patch area you've made up for with the increased PSI of the reduced contact patch. In the vast majority of situations, we both know that your narrower rear tires won't leave you wanting for more traction. I've only heard great things about the Bearclaws but I'm not sure they will work better or ride smoother than my Bighorns here in the Rockies but I like the idea of 8 plies (the Bighorns are 6). I have 27x12 Bighorns on one of my Grizzlies and stock 27x14 Zillas on the other one so maybe I'll try some 14" Bearclaws soon. Both have the tuners but no Elkas yet!

Awesome description. Yeah hate to say it (since it may cost you good money) but if you can get Elkas go for it. It's amazingly better than stock, and I only have the front so far!

Do you think I should go with the base model Grizzly 700 with 12'' wheels instead of the XTR / Se package with 14'' for all around trail riding and mostly hard pack XC? I Don't really do deep mudding.

You'll be happy with either one. I like the 12" wheels for better handling but you'll have a little more ground clearance with the 14" wheels. Most riders seem to prefer 14" wheels.

Got a few questions 1) Will the off set you used work on a 2023 grizzly se 2) Are you still going to do the trans american trail 3) Your thoughts on running 26x9x12

Yes the 23 is the same Grizzly as mine. Yes I plan to tackle it still. 26x9x12 us a great choice too, and I think the wider tires look better on the Grizzly than my narrows do. I like my 8x12 mainly to be able to better avoid deep ruts that form at GNCC races and there's a little less rotating mass. But 26x9x12 is a great choice, you won't be disappointed.

How would 5+2 rims handle do you think with either a 26x9 or 25x8 setup? Would the width still work you think in terms of front vs rear and not negatively impact handling? Very limited on option in terms of wheel offset. If I go with 26x9 I get more options as that is in 14 inches. I will be going with CST stags as they do great with studs on ice and snow for our winter trails in Canada. Keep up the great content with the Grizzly!

Everyone wants 14" wheels so that's what most wheel makers concentrate on. For ice and snow a slightly wider footprint may put provide just a tad more traction from the studs, so you may be on to something with the 5+2 offset with 26x9 tires but for just about all other terrain I think I would prefer my exact set up, I love it.

@@denischartrand3912 12" will be hard to find unless you order from Keizer. Mine came pretty quick and I love them. Not likely but you should also search ebay for a set of leftover HiPer Wheels.

Thanks for writing. I've poked around a little but haven't narrowed down the mods for yet. The blinkers will be LEDs to match Yamaha's sharp LED lights. This winter I'm fabricating a rear bumper / rear shock reservoirs solution and rear dif brace. Once this I can start to think about the street legal stuff. I think I want the front and rear blinkers in the bumpers, rather than mounted to something. I'm all about finding people to ride sections with me, so yeah. Let's keep in touch.

My friend passed away, ended up racing every round of the GNCC on a sport quad in his memory. I'll get back to my ultimate 4x4 this year. As for the TAT ride, I'm still going to do it, maybe this August if I can get the funds together.

Not yet. I have one more mod I need to make (fabricating a rear bumper to protect the remote shock reservoirs. I do have Elka Stage 5's on all corners, and the ride is absolutely incredible.

I love the tire wheel setup. I haven't ridden my Grizzly much. I've been racing my sport quad and emtb lately. I will have future episodes though, just not timely ones like most youtubers :)

Exactly. The 26 inch Kendas measure the same as the OEM tires that come on the Grizzly

ATV Scene, swap out the grizzly's seat for the kodiak 700 it's a couple inches lower for better handling.

I didn't believe this until I compared the part numbers. Looks like you're correct. Strange that Yamaha would build two different seats. I hate to give up my comfy seat, but I would like to compare the two. Thanks much!

they're coming, probably still this year. I've been racing a sport quad and mountain bike all year. I'm working on a custom rear bumper system that ties in the shocks, rear rack and more. Lots to cover.

My 2016 grizzly 700 had 26" tires. Measured just under 26" never heard of anyone breaking rims? You will not Handle as well with skinny tires on the back. Wider tires will go over the ruts better.

I recently (11/20/2021) bought a Kodiak 700 EPS SE. The intended use is on our 12 acre homestead. After watching these series of your build. You confirmed my purchase. I didn’t like the dealer I got it from. Had Cali not passed some B.S ban on the new sell of ATV,UTV,dirt bikes, etc (starts Jan 2022). I would have held off. I haven’t owned a ATV since early 90’s. So I’m new to these. Thanks for the content. And yes. Our economy is going to tank way worse than 2008. Banks are doing shady loans again. Car repos are in the multi millions, and this fake elected president, is sinking this ship. It’s only going to get worse after Biden. And more Kung flu variants.

What ban is coming in CA Jan 2022? Is it an even stricter CA Emissions? Noise? Anti-combustion engine? Yeah I think you may be right, the bottom is about to drop, but I predict we recover better than ever. Many illinformed people are finally realizing they were duped and there really is a deep state that is trying to transform America and the world.

I’m sorry. Typo on my end. Ca passed a bill 2 years ago on ATV, utv, side by side, etc under this C.A.R.B “thing” for cleaner air. No longer will certain machines be available in 2022. I don’t know all the details off hand. I spent some time reading the bill 3 months ago when I was informed of it. The wording in I just couldn’t wrap my head around. But this year they passed a small cc ban that takes place in 2 years. No gas powered chainsaws, lawn mowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, etc. that was a 1200 page bill I did read. What you hear coming outa Cali is not just Fox b.s. I have a business here & live it. However, there’s a lot of normal folks here. I’m a fellow Midwestern (Iowa & Minnesota).
