I have a very similar model to this and it was having the same issues. I was about to send it to the landfill, but watched your video first. I gave the stuck drum a few spins and now it's working again without even having to take it apart and lubricate it. Thanks.

Wow. I had this same deck with the same issue. Watched your video for 30 seconds, gave the drum a spin after removing the top, and voila, works like new. I guess letting it sit in the attic for years and years wasn't the best idea, but after I loosened the drum it's perfect. Thanks for the video!!! If I can remember to exercise it once or twice a year, I should be good to go for many years to come!

Worst thing for electronics especially if I told mechanical devices is to let them sit. Operate your equipment two or three times a year minimum preferably once a month if possible even if you only run it for a minute or two that's all it's going to take power it up go through all the features and then unplug it again as long as you follow that ritual these devices will last a lot longer

I picked up a free Toshiba DVD VHS combo (SD-V269-K-TU) and it had the same issue after I repaired the loading mechanism. The drumhead was not turning freely, so I took it apart, added some oil and it fixed it! Thank you.

I came here because I had the exact same model doing the exact same thing, except that the drum was turning freely. I assumed the mode switch as well but didn't really want to tear it down that far unless I really had to. When I saw your video, I thought to myself, what else could cause the drum to rotate too slowly and shut down? Well, if it's dirty, I have seen it happen. Cleaned the tape path, which didn't look too bad, but the drum revealed it was dirtier than it initially appeared based on the color of the swabs after wiping. If it re-occurs I'll lube the bearings and clean mode switch, but for now, one easy repair. Cheers!

Had that with bearings that have been sitting for a long time, where the grease inside slumps all down to the one side of the bearing, and all the lighter components evaporate out, leaving only the heavier oils and the soap behind. A drop of light oil, and mix them up by turning a few times, and fixed just like yours. Shows the design of the motor was just enough to handle the expected loss in the bearings and the tape wrap. Not much extra torque available, so if it is not up to speed during load the tape will stick to the head instead of having the hydrodynamic air bearing that only allows the heads to touch it.
@BoB4jjjjs3 жыл бұрын
As soon as you said you thought it was going to be the switch and it wasn't I went for the head. Only as I had a Video recorder do the same, it also freed off after a spot of oil. I took the head off and I laughed when the head was difficult to get off, I had the same problem, but it wouldn't go back on! It took me almost three hours to get it on again, no idea what the problem was, but it just would not go on. Eventually, it suddenly dropped into place! I still am none the wiser why it was so difficult. It was a Ferguson top loader, a right horrible thing to work on, built like a tank and just as hard to work on. I can't remember who built it, it was not Thorn, it was Japanese inside. VHS and as heavy as a bag of cement with a wired remote. Anyway, I got it going again, to my surprise it worked better than it had before. I bought it second hand and it had to go back to get it adjusted, there was a gap of an inch from the bottom of the screen just after I took it home. It almost put me off doing anything with VCRs, I don't anymore, I just do not have the room or the inclination. I have a portable DVD player to fix, but Man Shed to full of crap to get bench space. It is the charging circuit that went, an 8 legged chip, but it also routs the power through it, so it is dead. I don't know what chip it is as it blew three legs off and the ID. It is a Sanyo if I remember, but it got put aside for now and might get forgotten about as she bought another one, but I was brought up where you just had to fix things or do without. However, something it is just not worth it. Anyway, I digress. Nice video, one of the few I guessed at and got right.

Drum rotor bearings need lubrication possibly after about 1000 hours of record/playback. I used to repair a lot of vcrs on their own back in the day,,,that had mechanism and picture troubles due to dirty heads/pinch roller,,,missing drive belts,,,etc. Found a few machines with noisy rotary video heads,,,had worked out the magnet alignment markings in disassembly,,,,used a bit of light machine oil to lubricate bearings,,,and the drum rotor sound was a lot quieter in record/playback.

Good to know. I have several of these machines I got from a friend. The VHS components are in mint shape as he never used them. The DVD recorders suffer the same problem...discs don't record. Traced back to a dirty laser lense. Take drive apart to get to the lense and clean with alcohol. Put back together and everything works fine again. Smoking is a bane to video equipment. Only good thing is my bud no longer records using these and other recorders, so he donated them to me. I can use them to transfer tapes. One nice thing is the HDMI out which also works with VHS tapes...

I have a question. I have this exact same model except it has different outside colors. Certain VHS tapes I play in it have this gray fuzz at the top, about 20% of the screen. Everything that is supposed to be where the gray is was curved (Literally, the movie was curled) like twisted. On the left side of the top, I see this black diagnal line Covering like a photo frame of the gray. EXAMPLE: If there was a flower on screen, it would show the flower as normal, but where the Gray is, the pedals would completely stretch out. Is this a VCR or VHS problem?, because like I said, this only happens with abous 25% of my VHS tapes.

I took the case off to watch, when i insert a tape the reel goes around the head and then the reel itself doesn’t move while the drum spins with no problem at all. After about 10 seconds the reel will go back into the cassette and the unit will shut off. When i turn the power back on the tape will eject.
