A slight challenge to find the root cause on this one.

I remember these were mostly sold by large catalogue companies like Argos over here in the UK. Usually re-badged under the Bush or Alba names, and originally manufactured by Vestel in Turkey (and probably Funai, also). They were always quite cheap/ no-frills units, so naturally the VCR side of things often left a lot to be desired! On saying that, there were a few nicer examples around. I distinctly remember a lovely little Aiwa unit that was 4-Head model with NICAM digital stereo - quite unusual for a 14" TV-VCR combi. As you probably know, most TV's sold over here from the late-eighties onwards featured an RGB SCART socket, so it has always been very easy to get excellent results from old computers and video games. I don't think I know a single retro gamer that doesn't have at least a couple of CRT TV's or monitors dotted around the house (myself included!). They're an absolute must! :')

i bought a similar tv back in 96' for my kids, think it was a samsung, it cost just under $300 new. i swear it ran everyday , 24 hrs a day for its first ten years of life. Then my youngest daughter just called a few weeks ago saying it was on the fritz, picture jumping vertical and horizontal. So the next time she comes home from NC shes bringing it for me to look at. Im betting a few caps or solder joints are broken, may be savable? but she said it was working fine up until a few months ago. i was skeptical buying it at the time but I think we really got our monies worth on the over-priced combo unit. At least i know what Im getting into now, thanks for sharing, Dave!

Yeah! I also know a way to partially take apart a Funai VCR chassis on VCR/DVD combos and standalone VCRs. It would take me awhile for me to tell you how but I commented on your Toshiba VCR/DVD teardown video and I'll copy and paste that comment here. There are 2 screws on the circuit board that need to come out. That won't completely remove the board but you will have access to the capstan belt and mode switch. If you want to clean the mode switch on it, you have to flip the board/chassis back as if you were going to put it back in its cabinet. That will let you hold the front part of the mechanism and you can easily clean the mode switch. I've done that with my Sylvania VCR/DVD combo and now it works fine. If you come across a Funai made VCR or VCR/DVD combo again, this comment might help you. :)

@@TheVCRKing I do know how to take it apart to get at the belt out but to access the mechanism totally you need to remove the connectors as the wires are not long enough to get under the chassis. Because this job was to fix the vertical on the TV I am not doing anything extra because I am making 50 bucks on this repair.

Funny, not too long ago, one couldn't give CRT sets away (even the thrift stores had stopped accepting them). And I even remember seeing them tossed on the side of the road. Now they're becoming "cool" w/ retro-gamers.

Even today. You cant give these things away. It’s not verry common to find someone who will take one of these. Most prefer the HD crts. Those are rare as hens teeth and nearly impossible to get for a cheap price now. I had an earlier version of this set a few years back. Nothing on it would work right and it would go off and on randomly. Once disassembled from that plastic pcb frame I found more than a dozen bad solder joints, many in the power supply. I removed the old solder and re-soldered everything. After that it worked flawlessly. It was still going when the change to digital happened and it got a converter for continued use. It didn't bother fixing the VCR part since it wasn't needed. It lasted to become my mother's set in the nursing home.

@12voltvids

Unless you are working around the hv section. Yoke, fly back the rest of the voltages on a solid state TV are not that high. Keep your fingers away from the horizontal output, yoke, fly back, picture tube when on. The second anode will store hv for a while after it has been on as the tube will act as a capacitor and store a charge.

@@michaelturner4457 Absolutely. All hot chassis devices, TV and radio were hazardous to work on. An isolation transformer was mandatory. I use an isolation transformer for everything I work on. The power bar on the right side of my work bench is plugged into my big transformer under the bench.

I had a 19 inch combo unit like this but made by Symphonic and has the exact same UI as this TV. I've had so many issues with it the most annoying was the remote wouldn't work and I've taken it apart a bunch of times. I ended up just tearing it down and I got a new Sansui flat screen TV. Adj pot has been cleaned, caps around vert IC replaced, and the height adjustment pot can't "get there." I'd try to find a datasheet for the IC so I know expected voltages and which pin to work backwards, but I can't see any writing on it at all. Shot in the dark, but - I don't suppose you have SAMS 2576-2 and can tell me what the vertical IC is to assist my Googling? I'm also open to any veteran advice.

Good job on this set. Out of curiosity, will you work on portable equipment that has surface-mount components? I have a Casio VF-3000, a rare portable VCR from the 80s that has a built-in LCD color TV, and the TV is completely nonfunctional due to bad capacitors (which is common on the early Casio color TVs). It's packed with circuit boards, and has a ton of surface-mount components in addition to through-hole, and I'm scared of breaking it or never being able to get it back together if I try to fix it myself. Someday when I have the money, I'd be glad to send it to you, if it's something you'd work on.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 5 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem with those surface mount capacitors is they leak corrosive electrolytic which corrodes the traces and through hole connections. On multi layer boards it gets between the layers and destroys the board. I learned 30 years ago to stay clear of these. Fix one thing and 2 weeks later 3 more problems come back to bite you in the ass. We call those boomarangs. So no I am not looking for boomarangs. I only work on equipment that i feel will last after repair. If I dont feel it will last I wont do it.

I've had that same restaurant experience at times. Usually I just ask for another table. You should write a letter to management there fully explaining what went on and in the ned they wanted you out as if you caused the problem! About a year ago, I was at a restaurant and got a table. Shortly after, about 4 teens 15-17ish in age were put in the table next to me and were your typical giggly, silly can't stop laughing people staring at their phones. I wanted to tell them to SHUT UP but instead just simply moved to the other end of the restaurant, problem fixed. I guess if they want to act stupid in public, so be it!

As far as the cheap production of these combo units, back in 2002ish we bought the kids an x-box, a PS 2 and a Game Cube for Christmas and 3 of these units, same Emerson I believe, from Walmat and they were dirt cheap. being that this set is for retrogaming, I'm surprised that the owner didn't ask you add an RGB input to it. seems to be the growing trend with CRT's these days. As for getting older games to work on modern displays, I hear the Retrotink-2X works really well.
@12voltvids

I wouldn't add an rgb input even if someone asked as then i would be liable if anything happened. Many sets are hot chassis and adding rgb requires isolation. Even adding that, because it is not a manufactures option, if the set were to burst into flames down the road anyone that did any unauthorized mods could be liable. For this reason you wont see any videos doing rgb mods. It is pretty simple to do as the y/c jungle ic has rgb inputs used by the on screen display to insert menus, however it is the liability I am concerned about.

Clean? I used to cover my 13, 17, 19 inch sets with a towel..ha. I spent many hours and dollars in the arcade rush from 1973 through 1990 s. I believe these old crt games along with the pinball games were the greatest. I remember investing a whopping $500 for a Magnavox Odessey game ! Hang on to a piece of history if you can ..our parents did..old tube radios, victrolas brought a pretty penny to some.

I always stay well clear of those vcr / dvd combos, yea the screens maybe fine but the vcr or dvd drives don't last long in them then you have a TV that doesn't work 100% and you can't fix them because parts to fix those drives etc are hard to find or cost more than the tv, sadly a throw away item.

Right and that was why at the shop I worked at, we didn't offer them for sale. People would ask for them, and that was what we told them. The TV will last way longer than the DVD or VCR and when that broke you had a piece of junk. I have been given a few, and it works still. I was given a big 28" Toshiba with a VCR and DVD player. Haven't plugged it in since it was given to me.

The worst thing about Your diner situations is the fact owner/manager will not know about that You're going to drop Your favourite place just due to rude personnel. Probably You just don't want to complain to manager because You're not that kind of person (I wouldn't complain as well and just not come back anymore) but that's just said. Not mentioning today's stupid parents who don't give a f* what their kids are doing - It's just like modern kids are allowed to do anything!

Believe it or not this is quite common. My daughter worked in a restaurant for awhile and she would tell stories of ignorant people bring screaming babies in disrupting the entire restaurant and patrons would respond by not leaving tips.

Funai had cheapness to an art, I would tell people that bought their vcr's that they should have just tossed them into the trash can by the door at the store when they bought them and save themselves the trouble 6 months later, the best thing about there TV's were the crt's seemed decent.

personally i would ignore what the waitress said just because the woman spoke to her in a foreign language presumably about what you said about the child the chances of the same family eating while you are are very slim also your entitled to eat a meal in peace what the waitress forgets is what you pay for your meal pays her wages

I was just annoyed that I was rushed out the minute I was done. I was ready to leave and was just finishing reading a story in newspaper and she said I had to go because someone else wanted the table. I guess she wasn't expecting a tip, because that is not the way to get one.

Sorry about your lunch. I just get up and move after going over to the manager to discuss the problem. do not leave it to two women to decide your fate. They will destroy you! (half joking) Now that I know about these specialty gamers, I'll keep an eye out for small crt color tvs.

I expect the owner of your local eatery would be very interested in how one of his watresses conspires with female customers of her own ethnicity to eject male customers who will now take their custom elsewhere. I think I would make sue that waitress stopped doing that even if I never ate there again.

So irritating that I had to listen to a grumpy story (you could have just said, cover your mouth when coughing please. Problem solved the mom will realize oh i should be helping my kid understand how to act, no rudeness or crabby attitude towards an innocent kid) just for you to give up on fixing what I needed to learn. Why even post this?

I did and it fell on deaf ears. When i was that age if i acted up in a resturaunt i world have been marched out and that would have been that. Wouldn't even have gotten to eat. There are some cultures where the kids, especially boys get away with anything and have temper tantrums to get their own way in public. My parents wouldn't have put up with that and neither did i. Both my kids grew up to be respectful and helpful adults. Why because they were taught at a very young age how to act. Never ever had to lay a finger on either of them for deciplin either. They wouldn't have had to be told to cover their mouth when coughing and not to stand on the bench seat of a restaurant seat and cough all over the people in the next booth. Manners and respect for other patrons. Unfortunately the mother didn't give a shit and when i mentioned it to her I was met with a bunch of 4 letter words and told to mind my own business. That's what pissed me off so much on that time.

@12voltvids I'm sorry. I was so frustrated that day. My autistic daughter is very obsessed with VHS and large TVs. They are either super expensive or trashed nowadays. Your videos help me greatly. I can't afford to replace them as fast as she breaks them. So I've learned to solder and tear things down and your videos have been a blessing. She hurts herself when these things die on her. Like bangs her head on tables and bites herself. This was an issue I was wanting to fix no matter how difficult. I have always enjoyed a challenge. That day I guess those 45 mins felt like a lifetime and I snapped at you because I don't know you and it was easy to take out my frustrations through the internet. Instead of her because she doesn't understand, she is 13 and can't even use the restroom without my help. I am so sorry I lashed it at you, and in such a public way. Especially when you have saved me on those days more than anyone. I hope I didn't cause too much stress on you, you deserve thanks for all the information you put out there! I'm so sorry again!
