Thank you for this very helpful information! I’m in the process of purchasing a small house in Indiana that was built in 1933…and it has pine woodwork and doorways, throughout. (Its best feature is that it is located only a three-minute walk from where my daughter and her loving husband live.) Naturally, the doorways and woodwork have been quite marked up and scarred, over the years. So, in addition to making the doors and woodwork look much better, I’m looking forward to giving the house a bright white environment, throughout -- especially, in the very small kitchen with arched doorways. Your detailed instructions were exactly what I needed to hear as I make preparations to work on the house. That I’m praying well soon be “mine”. Thank you, again, so very much, for your sensible and detailed instructions! By the way, my maternal grandparents were originally from England and Wales…and this happens to be the anniversary of the birth of my wonderful great grandmother- - the original Memorial Day of May 29. She was a woman who loved to give hugs and always wore an apron. We were privileged to have her with us until she was 92 years old, and I was fortunate to have many more memories of her. She lived in a very small house with no running water, so I look forward to knowing that I am blessed to be living in a very small house with all the modern conveniences, and making my home very warm and welcoming, just as hers was.

Hi, glad you found the video helpful. Your new (old) house sounds great. Good to hear it is so close to your daughter, you must be so pleased. Indiana does look a large and exciting place to be with such a mix of places to see. Choosing a white paint scheme for your house should make it look bright and you can then add accent colours with your furnishings. I am from the South of England but have taught in a Welsh College which I found very enjoyable. Hope your decorating projects go well and that you have many happy years in your new house 😊

Aubrey, your videos are brilliant and so much help, I have been recommending them to lots of people! I have only recently started using water-based paints rather than oil (very convenient but not as nice a finish I find). Within the water-based paint range, why are some referred to as 'water based' and some are 'acrylic'?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gregg for your kind comments. It is good to know you are finding the video`s helpful and even recommending them to your friends. Yes, with water based paints the finish is not quite as good as solvent based but they are improving all the time. They do, however, have many advantages and better for the environment. Acrylic paints have a high acrylic content which makes them tough, and able to expand and contract depending on the temperature. They also provide excellent adhesion. Acrylic resin is more expensive than other resins like vinyl. Check out the difference in price between acrylic eggshell and vinyl matt emulsion. Hope all goes well with your future decorating projects 😊

Hi Aubrey. Great video - very helpful. What's your opinion on owatrol oil as a thinner/conditioner for solvent paints? Personally I find it makes paint much easier and gives a much smoother finish. Also what's the deal with solvent paints over water based? Thanks.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Owatrol has been around for many years and is used by many experienced decorators. A lot of people I know use this product for the reasons you have suggested. Painting oil over water based is not usually a problem as long as the paint film is in good condition, it`s the other way around that causes nightmares if not carried out properly. Glad you found the video helpful, more on paints to follow 😊

Thanks, I've been having an issue with a skin forming on the paint in the can although the lid is banged on tight and also with water based paint, rust forming on the rim of the can found after some storage, so have to be careful the rust doesn't fall into the paint, I try and go for the plastic lids, but they're not always available. Have you any ideas on the prevention of these issues.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 23 күн бұрын
Yes these things can be very annoying. To prevent skin forming on oil based paints, try pouring a small amount of white spirit onto the paint and swirl around so it covers the surface of the paint before putting the lid back on the tin. The problem with the rust on the metal tins is not so easy to deal with. I would suggest de-canting the paint into a plastic paint kettle with a lid and labeling the contents with a permanent marker. You can get packs of these kettles with lids on the internet.

I have Solvent based paint on my skirting boards and Doors. I like to use solvent based paint to repaint. Also some parts of my skirting boards have been replaced. What do I need to apply on to the replacement parts 1st before painting and repainting all? What type of brush is best to use? Natural hair ? Do you have a video on how to apply solvent base paint on the above? Thank you in advance
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Жыл бұрын
If the replacement skirting board is made of timber (pine) you will first need to apply a dab of shellac knotting over the knots to prevent the tannin bleeding through your paint. You can buy a paint called primer undercoat which is water based. Apply one coat thinned around 10% with water to act as the primer. Let it dry for a few hours and then apply another coat. You can then apply your oil based satinwood or gloss over the top. If the new skirting is MDF you won`t need to use the knotting. The modern synthetic bristle brushes are good for both oil and water based paints. I, like a lot of decorators, like to use Purdy paint brushes. I have some videos on my channel showing how to paint doors and frames but none yet on skirting board but I do hope to make one soon. I hope all goes well with the decorating.

@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes it can be used on oil based paints before applying a water based paint over it. It adheres extremely well and also helps to prevent the water based paint from chipping. Only down side is that it is an oil based coating so it takes a bit longer to dry and you need to clean your brush with white spirit and soapy water afterwards. Hope all goes well with the decorating 😊

I need to repaint all interior skirting. It needs to be tough and washable because the cleaners barely wiped over them and the paints come off. The house builders painted with dulux satinwood but I've seen reviews that they yellow and wipe off easily. Please help!
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
If Dulux Satinwood was applied to the skirting then I am very surprised that it is coming off that easy after just being wiped with a cloth. This type of paint is widely used in houses in the UK and gives a reasonable amount of protection. The oil based version would give the best protection. Generally speaking, the water based gloss and satinwood does not yellow like the oil based alternatives. However they are not as hard wearing as the oil based paints. If your skirting boards are going to receive a lot of knocks and regular cleaning then an oil base gloss would provide a good deal of protection but make sure an oil based undercoat is applied first. I hope that helps.

If you would prefer not to use satinwood or gloss then I would suggest oil based eggshell paint. This is a hardwearing paint that does not need an undercoat as long as the surface has previously been painted. It dries with a very low sheen like the outside of an egg.
