Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena

Күн бұрын

We're home in New Zealand and are so excited to bring you this 4 part series on the best food in our homeland. This is our 4th New Zealand video and it's based in our hometown of Auckland. Auckland is a very multi-cultural city and the food scene is diverse and vibrant. We hunt down traditional hāngi, Indian chaat, Szechaun noodles and a unique Samoan pie.
What we ate and where we ate it:
1. Hāngi from The Māori Kitchen, Queens Wharf International Cruise Terminal, 89 Quay St, Auckland 1010, New Zealand. Open daily 7:00am to 4:00pm.
2. Chaat from Mumbai Chaat, 1 Kitchener Rd, Sandringham, Auckland 1025, New Zealand. Open Monday 12:00pm to 9:00pm, Wednesday and Thursday 11:30am to 9:00pm, Friday to Sunday 11:30am to 9:30pm.
3. Dan dan noodles and dumplings from Eden Noodles, 105 Dominion Rd, Mount Eden, Auckland 1024, New Zealand. Open 11:30am to 9:30pm.
4. Palusami pie from Blue Rose, 414 Sandringham Rd, Sandringham, Auckland 1025, New Zealand. Open Monday 9:00am to 3:00pm, Tuesday to Friday 7:00am to 3:00pm, Saturday and Sunday 8:00am to 4:00pm.

We’re Thomas and Sheena, food and travel fiends. We travel full time, hunting for the BEST local food in the world to showcase via our KZfaq videos. Food is a window into a country's culture and one of the most exciting ways to get to know a place.
We're all about eating what and where the locals eat. You won't find food that's been created merely to be social media worthy on here- no rainbow bagels, gold leaf soft serves- just genuine, authentic food that tastes incredible.
From street food to mom and pop restaurants, we want to show you the best and most authentic food we find on our travels.

I admire how you added the phrase 'through our eyes' to your sentence. I felt it added a humble touch to your message and will prevent people from criticising the way you showcase NZ. Thank you for this incredible video. You can rarely go wrong with corned beef 😄

One of the things I really love about you both is your positivity and appreciation for kai. Its also body positivity in a way. So many people place judgement on 'good' or 'bad'' foods and associate virtue or guilt with them. Diet culture is everywhere.. As a guy recovering from anorexia, I really appreciate people who just respect and appreciate their kai, without all that other faff. Thanks so much. You have impact in probably more ways than you realise!

What an excellent showcase of the different cultures that make up Aukland. A bit of everything, definitely whets the appetite for travellers to NZ and locals alike. How easy is it to overlook the sensations in our own backyards. The Chaat really looked exactly as it does in India, looked just like your transported back to Mumbai..... but the price!! That was more onpoint with buying a Coffee at the base of the Eiffel Tower🤔😪 Made Aloo Puri the other night.... and put the Sev on the dish correctly thanks to "learning to eat with T & S". Loved this 4 part special back home.👍

It is amazing to know so many cultures. However, it is often difficult for people from non-native cultures to replicate some of their important dishes because the ingredients just aren't available in the country, so they either make substitutes when they can or they can't make the dish altogether. Also, some of the same produce can differ from the produce from the origin, for eg the mustard greens grown in Australia tend to be much less bitter than the ones in Asia and some fruits tend to be less intense than the ones from Asia.

*_Hāngi_* - Obviously you two know about Hawaiian kalua pig/pork which is also cooked underground. Lots of work and no space so most restos use traditional kitchen methods as Thomas mentioned. Delicious. Very cool to see the sides that were served with the pork...stuffing! That was a surprise. *_Eden Noodles Cafe_* - I'd be all over those noodles and dumplings. Mmm, mmm. Is pavlova not really popular these days or not your favorite? I was hoping it would make an appearance. Another fantastic day! NZ flew by.
@ChasingaPlate

Hi Tosh, thanks for watching this one mate! Yes! Would love to give the Hawaiian version a taste one day. Is it easy to find do you know? Or is it relegated to the tourist dining experience- ie booking into the special Hawaiian umu feast at the hotel? You’d love those noodles and dumplings I’m sure- we eat there every time we’re home! So happy you enjoyed the NZ series mate. Ahhh pav is a real favourite in our house but we always make it at home- maybe we’ll do a short cooking segment in our next NZ series so we can include it 😄😍 thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena

Super casual *_Hawaiian Plate_* restaurants are in every city on the mainland USA and kalua pork is easily the most popular meat. A Hawaiian plate is choice of protein plus white rice and a scoop of mac salad - top 10 comfort food right there. Poke is the current popular Hawaiian food but kalua pork is the all time champ. But yes, traditional kalua (which means cooked in the ground 😀) is rare. The Polynesian center in Honolulu does it that way but like Hāngi, I imagine it's more backyard or special events. *_Pavlova_* - Glad you love it. I certainly read about pav before my trip to Sydney. It's not the first dessert people think about in the U.S. so would have been cool to hear your thoughts.
