A click track is an essential tool for recording. Without a click, even the most talented musicians would find it difficult to keep each track exactly in time as they record. While recording, your click track serves as your conductor or metronome to keep you exactly in time. Nothing says 'amateur' like a recording that slows down and speeds up! Learn to use a click and it will be your best friend in the studio.
When you first begin playing with a click track you may find it a little strange. The more you play with a click track you will become more comfortable with it. Eventually you will be completely at home playing with the click and your recordings will sound VERY professional.
Audacity has a built-in ability to create a click track designed to your exact specifications. Some of the specific items you can customize are, the number of bars (measure) or duration of the click track, the number of beats per bar or meter, the sound of the click itself, and the strength of pulses of the click track.
To create a click track you can follow these steps:
1. Open Audacity, start a new recording and go to the GENERATE menu
2. Select CLICK TRACK...
3. You will now see the Click Track window.
4. Go through all the settings to create the click track you need.
When creating a click track for a recording figure out how long you want your track to be. You may not know the number of bars you need exactly, so estimate. Once you have created your click track do a quick run through your song to ensure you have enough bars. Give yourself a few extras at the beginning of your recording for your convenience when getting ready to start.
As you record each of your tracks it is a good idea to count out loud along with the click before being playing. Counting can be edited out later and will give you a clear visual and sound reference as you sync up your tracks.

Cool. I discovered the click track a month ago while teaching myself how to blend my voice on SATB parts. It is amazing how so few people actually utilize programs like this on their PCs. All a person needs is a good usb mic.and they're ready to lay down some really cool tracks. Thanks on showing how you use the time shift tool. Good presentation .

Hi, I love this video. I'm teaching piano to 6 children and last years I recorded them with audacity. I made a little cd and gave them for Christmas. The parents were so proud. This year, I want to register themselves at the piano while singing a song. Witch way would be the best to do that with audacity? Having voice and piano? The click track is interesting but too hard to follow for them. Thanks!

Hello Andrew - does the click allow you to select beyond 1/4 notes without having it to do it by doubling the tempo and measures etc..., I'd like 1/8, 1/16's. etc note patterns as well as the ability to run triplets, etc...? I like the idea of being able to create tempo maps by "stacking" with this tool but I'm not able to find these additional options in the click menu.

We are doing a click track that will be herd buy the drummer and samples and guitar parts that will go through the PA for live shows. I was wondering if you had any input to how we might do that with Audacity. I was thinking the best way to do that is record are band playing on one track with the click track going throw headphones to the drummer. Then take that recording and put all are samples and guitar on different tracks. Then delete the original recording of are band and export as an MP 3. The click to the right channel going to the drummer head phones and the samples and guitar going through the left to the PA. So we can use a mp 3 player for live shows. Maybe there is a better way but this seems like the easiest way that I can think of. Your input is greatly appreciated and thanks for posting your tutorials.

I am interested in how to reate a track for a tune, or an mp3 of a song that does not have drums for example; you just load the song into audacity and do the bar extension you show after the clicks are made? the song i am interested doing is Tom Sawyer from Rush, have drumless file but without a click it is very hard to lay drums right, now this song has the first 34 bars at 4/4 then 24 at 7/4 then goes again at 4/4 then back to 7/4 at the end; have not counted all but the 7/4 part I believe the bpm is different than the original bpm of 135 bpm. No idea how it was recorded in the 1980, maybe without click at all but it is a very difficult tune to nail time by just using internal clock when in studio; live it is a little easier to play.
