In this test area a mat will pull the rear wheel in a random direction (left or right) while driving over a soppy ground. This simulates a side collision at 50 km/h.

at 200 km/h the front left wheel explode, in an audi tt 3.2 vr6. litterally ur car still running foward like nothing happened. incredible.

whenever the front wheel explodes, the stability of the car is hardly compromised, if at all. The back wheels are the ones which decide.

Have performed this test with others in the same non-ESP car and it was possible to get it out of this skid. Not everybody can. Next problem: this is an exercise so even if you can you are expecting it. In real life you might be driving with just one hand on top of the steering wheel when the skid happens: still game over.

exactly what I was thinking. Normally you don't expect this to happen. When I'm driving on the highway, I only have 1 hand on the steering wheel 99% of the time and not even in a good position or with a firm grip. I think it's time ESP also does corrective steering instead of just supporting

@@tafdiz no, that's incorrect. ESP is much more intelligent then you think. If the input you give it through your wheel doesn'T correspond to the accelerations the car endures, it intervenes as much as it can. Of course, if you steer in the wrong direction, it will make things work, but so will steering alone haha.

You physically can't save slides that the ESP can, even if you're the best driver in the world, because you can't control the braking on each of the 4 wheels individually and modulate it 1000's of times per second like ESP can. You might countersteer on time and that's about it.
@Kaiser-ks3yq
@Kaiser-ks3yq 9 ай бұрын
@@derbigpr500You don't need to brake, braking transfers weight onto the front axle (assuming you're somewhat going forwards), if you have a FWD car (and a limited slip diff helps too) and gun the throttle, even if you're doing 50mph in reverse with the steering almost straight, the car will violently spin forwards, and don't let off the throttle til it stabilises, otherwise it will do a sort of pendulum turn by accident (and crash), if you don't believe me, watch MINI racing, as they're all short wheelbase FWD, in fact even in a RWD ever so slight acceleration can help if it wasn't spinning up the tyres that got you into a skid in the first place, otherwise in RWD if you can countersteer enough to save it but it's understeering so much that you can't counter the slide (understeer and oversteer at the same time is terrifying), then slightly braking could help (and ESP could be useful here, but if the car is at such an angle that the forwards most front wheel (if the car is spinning to the left, it'd be the right front wheel) is past the center of mass, then using the hanbrake ever so slightly could get you out of a slide as well as ESP, since you'd want to apply max braking to both rear wheels without them locking or sliding more (think pulling them back into line), and the inside wheel will start to loose grip first, when that one is slightly past the limit of grip, then the outside rear wheel has more grip, causing the car to return to center (it's the reason locking your brakes can cause understeer just before it happens) I keep my ESP on when I'm driving to college, but off when I'm having fun, since I'll be prepared, I switch it off, since not only is ESP just as good as a good driver who knows how to send weight/power/braking to different wheels, but the only difference is you can predict what you will do, you can't predict what some computer program with 1000's of lines of code, and also ESP overheats the brakes, since it targets specific brakes each time you steer, the brakes overheat very quickly, whereas if you don't have ESP, and when you brake you use all the brakes, then the heat is distributed throughout, and you can still make the car do whatever you want, but it might require left foot braking while on the throttle in a FWD car, you push the brake bias rearward, so the rear comes round more easily, this will overheat your front brakes, but you could blend the handbrake with the foot brake instead, which would stop the overheating issue, but cause difficulties reaching the handbrake while changing gears when cornering, like you would in rally (the best motorsport, F1 drivers have admitted it's more impressive), so maybe when your hands are free left foot brake, and when the brakes are boiling swap to handbrake and footbrake (the pads overheat and stop working if they individually overheat like with ESP, but because without electronics the car uses the brakes evenly, the pads rarely overheat, even in a road car with road brakes, the first thing to go is usually the fluid boiling, which causes the brakes to work just as well as usual, you just can't engage them because the entire pedal is sponge. TLDR ESP saves lives, but you're faster, safer, and more reliable when racing without it, however if you think when your driving to the shops you should turn it off then you're stupid (who gets brake boil going shopping?)

I have a 13 plate Audi A3 TFSI 1.3. It doesn’t have drive select or a sport feature and it’s pretty slow getting to 60 but it’s not the slowest car I’ve had. One day I was messing with the traction control button. If I push for more than 3 seconds it turns traction control all the way off, but if I press it for 1 second the display shows “ESP Sport”. I notice a big difference in how quickly the car gains speed, and it sounds a lot louder too. My car is front wheel drive, but previously I had a 1 Series, rear wheel drive that was constantly off for traction control due to a fault, and one day my car spun out. With my Audi being a front wheel drive, is it still important to drive with traction control on? My crash happened as my back end went out and I couldn’t regain control, whereas I feel like with front wheel drive, the car is being pulled from the front so it shouldn’t end up going out at the back? Basically I like driving with ESP Sport activated because it sounds better and is noticeably quicker, but I don’t want it if it’s going to be something that’s seriously dangerous. I never use it in bad weather, but if a dude in a merc is giving me them drag race looks and revs his engine, I do flick the switch and do my best to keep up 🤣 Also, if anybody can tell me.. What’s the difference between ESP Sport, and traction control switched completely off? I don’t notice anything significant in power between those two, and just feel wreckless whenever I switch it all the way off. The ESP Sport is good though for anybody who didn’t know that was a thing

ESP Sport puts your cars stability program to allow a bit of a play, to be more generous with your feedback before activating. And turning it off means you will have no assistance when needed, so keep it in Sport mode, and don't turn it off unless you want to drift, maybe in some other car.

ESP focuses on fixing the car’s trajectory while TC focuses on limiting wheel spin and maintaining grip. Both use individual wheel braking in different ways. For example, ESP slows the inside rear wheel when taking a high speed turn, whereas TC slows the wheel when it starts spinning on a slippery surface (puddle/snow/etc). In the Audis I’ve driven (C6 and C7), ESP Sport means both ESP and TC allow for more sliding and wheel spin before activation. They allow the car to understeer/oversteer more and allow the wheels to spin a bit when using launch control. They will still activate in extreme situations, although it may or may not be too late. Turning them fully off means you’re on your own. I don’t recommend turning them off because the cars have very little feedback (especially in the steering) so they are out of control long before you realize. The systems do so much in the background that you don’t realize. As they say, you don’t know what you have till its gone 😅

@@Inanabananana I'm not sure if ESP can actually be turned off completely in modern cars, esp. compact cars. At least for VW Golf I know that you can't. And as Audi A3 is pretty much a VW Golf, I'm 80% sure it's the same system. My guess would be that ESP off actualyl means TC is off so you can free yourself in sand or snow by using a lot of slipping.

hi there, I have a question... if there is an option that allows you to turn it off as I have experienced with my VW golf Mk6 and now Audi A3. I understand that it is a safety feature that can save your life while driving... but why would anyone switch it off and when can you switch it off? what are the benefits of ESP off?

Good Job :) I've also managed to stay straight on the course most of the times, but in the last two tries I accidentally steered in the wrong direction for a split second. You can see that at 0:12 and 0:23 if you look closely. With ESP OFF my mistake was punished immediately, while ESP ON saved me when making the same mistake.
