I did end up using an metal pipe. The project took me actually 4 hours.
If you start working on it and already know the steps, it can be done way faster.
I read that all 4.2l engines have this problem!
This Audi had water cooled alternator, and it took me maybe 15 mins to reinstall those line on oil cooler back, but it's not too bad.
Overall I'm happy with the result, and it saved me from replacing water pump, etc.

Wow great video! Showed this to my mechanic and it sure beats the Audi dealership process. Metal union is on order, just compiling a list of other parts to replace whilst it’s apart, IE sway bar bushings etc. will keep you posted on our progress, thanks for sharing.

If you have this issue with your 4.2 engine, Carwise is the place to fix it. I just had mine done by Phillip (the person on this video) You will need the water pipe on course, Coolant, Oil & filter, figure eight seal and O rings for all the water pipes that connect the the oil filter housing and alternator. As a precaution I had the complete oil filter housing unit replaced since this unit had to be removed to get to the stupid plastic pipe. Phillip can and does do this job as his video shows. If you are near the Virginia Beach area or take a trip to get your car fixed as I did, set it up with Phillip and get your car fixed.

The part is called oil cooler union pipe, if i remember it correctly!

Mine is now leaking at the oil cooler as well. Could you be kind enough to tell me what parts you replaced? Also part numbers? I would assume it’s going to be more then just the pipe and 1. O-Ring on the pipe near the exhaust bolt? Thanks so much for a great video.

Kevin Aubut i actually did replace just that pipe:) just get the alluminum one, not plastic, so you will never do this job again, its an architectural flaw putting plastic to metal which gets hot all the time, sure the part will keep failing. Thank you!!!

Carwise Automotive Solutions is there no gasket on the oil cooler? So looks like the alternator, subframe & motor mounts come out? Anything else that I should watch out for? I’m kind of worried about getting that too bolt out. Also confused on why Erwin indicates the engine needs to be removed to do the job? When you said took you a couple of hours. Lol maybe just for money

@@kaubut0145 Cause it is a engine out job if you take it to Audi. Same with the head gaskets or exhaust gaskets. This is a way easier method. BUT for head gaskets and timing stuff, engine would be nice to have out of the car, I have taken whole engine part in the engine bay, what a pain in the ass, but I work on all my cars, so I'm not giving someone else money when I can do it myself.

Can that hard line be disconnected at the opposite end away from the cooler so it can be swung out away from the bolt?

BBCC i couldnt get a visual on the other end of the line, thats why had to bend it a bit.

No it can not, it is bolted with 2 bolts for the rear coolant pipe, which is then attached to the rear of each head. 1 pipe on each side of the motor for each head. One goes to the oil cooler, other goes to the reservoir.

I did the presure test i think its from this union pipe.My question is from this problem my car wants to go in safety mode nd when i scan it says tcm no signal/communication?? Please let me know.

Hello, could you tell me what size ALLEN you used to get oil cooler out? Also, when removing subframe, there are so many bolts under there I’m not sure which ones to take out. Lastly, do you really need something to hold engine up from oil pan ? I appreciate your time and help!

I honestly dont remember the exact size , but aliens come in sets anyway. Subframe is not hard to remove and you can visually see the bolts holding it, also get the bolts that attach to motor mounts as well, it will be easier to remove the rest. For safety support the engine, its a big engine so dont risk it:) good luck💪

UPDATE: Got the oil cooler out! Thanks for your help man. I was wondering if you needed to tap the new pipe in with a hammer into the assembly or just kinda keep squeezing it in

@@marioacevedojr397 are you installing the plastic or metal version? Actually in both cases dont use a hammer:)) just make sure you get the old pieces out completely and clean it well from any particles . Its a tight fit, also put some oil on the rubber o rings so they dont get any damage when you shove the pipe in there👍

So I have everything apart the only thing left is the 5 bolts for the oil cooler itself. My question is what did you use for the studs? I tried a 8mm Allen wrench and it’s not enough. Leverage to break it loose.

Kevin Aubut i used a 11mm socket or the star bit on those studs for manifold.

I am not able to get the alternator out, I cannot get the top bolt out, it hits the radiator fans before it comes out. I must have missed something I don't think this method will work for my 2004 A8

Im sure this will work for 4.2l engine. I dont remember do fans come out or not. You can probably youtube the alternator removal. Good luck!

When you removed the subframe bar and engine mount bracket did you replace the bolt's I've been told I need to but the bolts are like a tenner each.

I didnt. Only bolts that need to be replaced are aluminum ones👍

great info man. I have a 2012 S5 that just started pooring coolant out as fast as I put in just out of no where. I did just change the oil the day before. So I don't know what I could have done it drove about 20 miles and all the fluid came out of nowhere it seems as though a lot of it is coming right at the back of the engine passenger side but I haven't removed any of the skid plates yet it just happened last night any advice much appreciated thank you brother

Can you explain more about prying the tubing that is being blocked by the exhaust manifold stud. Did you flatten the top of that pipe hitting the stud? Did you just slowly "force" the pipe out? What section of the pipe did you bend to get it free?

dart arnaez i slowly pried it . Was placing the pry bar as close to the fitting as possible so it could pop out without the pipe being bent and stuck in there.

Hey great video Carwise. I see you removed the two motor mounts while doing this job...do you remember if you also removed the front engine mount (called torque mount)? It seems like you could replace all 3 mounts while you are doing this repair job.

Front mount is canceled out or should be canceled out if it hasn't. Audi technically got rid of it cause of issues. I re-used mine that was split, I drilled it, and put a massive bolt through them and with washer and nut, with a whole tube of rubber gluing the torn mount, works great. I don't feel any vibrations when racing or taking the car to the track.

It was the same. Fairly brutal repair even for a seasoned VW/Audi technician.

@@3n3ly7m9 completely different chassis, all steel D1 platform used for Bentley flying spur/continental gt, some components are similar to D3 A8 but not a great deal. All chassis legs/floorpan and upper structures are completely different

I plan to replace the 5 oil cooler bolts with new ones. The head of the allen bolt underneath the manifold stud and behind a coolant pipe is shallower and narrower compared to a regular M10 allen. Do you think a regular allen (slightly taller allen bolt) would bump into the coolant pipe in front of it ?

Part of the critical part in doing this job is to go out of your way not to strip those low head allen bolts. its been a while I bought various types of bolts to make sure I got it done right. A regular height allen bolt would have made the job easier. What is even better is using triple square bolts. The the vw version of the A8 I believe uses the triple square the last time I did some research. @@carwiseautomotiveinc.3123

Is this what causes the oil to mix with coolant reservoir? I wanted to buy an S6 c5 but there was oil in the coolant reservoir! But the oil dipstick was normal oil even overfilled but not milky !

jankizkhanz i would check the head gasket. It can leak in different spots in between cylinders etc. a bit hard to assume without looking at it

Oil cooler will cause this problem. The brittle oil pipe for the coolant passthrough only allows coolant from the engine block to the oil cooler. It can't mix anything as its just a passthrough.

What is the size of the o rings for the water pipes on the top of the adapter you mention at 5:15 ? I have two 15X2 mm o ring for the water pipe.

This looks fun..... had my car spring a massive dump of coolant last night. Looks like it's under the engine or behind towards the firewall. Would the part you're referencing in the video trigger a mass dump?

Had that happen on my b6 s4, ended up being the heater exchanger pipe around the back of the motor and a coolant line.

hey Man I have a 2000 Audi a8 4.2 Brand new timing belt water pump and all that..all a sudden my coolant level dropped slowly and it got worse over time. car never overheats and has plenty of power..I am betting This is the problem...sound about right ? the only thing is i have neveer seen any coolant on the ground but i have not looked to hard either. I am going to put the car up on my car lift..should i be able to see the leak visibly?

Eric Knowles this leak is visible . Must be something else then. When this union pipe gives up , you start losing lots of coolant.

damn yea i put on the lift today and didnt see anything visible. ran the car about ten minutes. The weird thing is the coolant level dropped and i didn't even drive the car. Leads me to think it is leaking But i am stumped...When i took the coolant cover off i can see a small amount of smoke but not thick. but it is steady.! Im stumped

Transmission oil cooler, is right under the trans when you look under the car. The oil cooler for the engine is in its housing on the oil adapter bracket shown in the video. They both look the same.

I have the leak but can't tell where it's coming from plus mine is gas converted so checked all them pipes but are fine seem to lose more water when the car is parked up

Green Zone cant tell the exact number right now, but approximately around $500-$600.

I got a quote from an authorized Audi garage $4200 labor. (Yes I'm taking it somewhere else.) But I am assuming they are expecting to lift the whole engine out per Audi recommendations. I like this work around better.
