Which is the best luxurious plug-in hybrid - the Audi A8, or the Mercedes S-Class?
Well, we’re putting them to the test to find out!
When it comes to luxury limousines, it doesn’t get much better than these two cars. The question is, when they both look so good and are fitted with great materials throughout the cabin, can you choose one over the other?
Well, let’s see if we can separate them when it comes to performance! Starting with the Audi, it comes equipped with a 3-litre V6 turbo coupled with an electric motor to deliver 462hp. It drives all four wheels and will set you back at least £86,000 (although the long-wheelbase version we have here starts at £89,000).
Then we have the S-Class, which has a 3-litre straight-six along with an EV motor, which both deliver 367hp and 150hp. We don’t have a combined figure yet though. And no, it isn’t as simple as just adding them both together!
There’s one key difference with the S-Class though - the LWB edition will set you back at least £111,000! Is that enough to make you choose the Audi? You’ll have to stick with Mat to see for yourself!

Both cars are amazing! I love both the Audi and the Mercedes Benz! But I would buy the Audi A8 because it's more powerful and cheap than the Mercedes Benz S-Class!

I think cars like this are as much about status as they are about being a good car. In that case I’d have the one that is used as a byword for top-of-the-line. Get the A8 you have an expensive Audi, get the Mercedes and you have an S-Class. Which is the S-Class of luxury cars.

I want a car like this for the maximum wow effect, but I still don't have the money for a Rolls Royce or Bentley. The wow effect has but this generation especially BMW (I'm not a fanboy in the last 7 Series was simply a 5 Series with larger kidneys). Maybe even a Genes G90 could be a dangerous competitor this generation.

@@jeffs6090 Looks mean nothing. The G90 needs better powertrains and platform to compete with the S Class and the other germans. Hyundai's V8s and V6s are way too underwhelming in response, efficiency and noise. Their ride too is just like a carbon copy of the Lexus cars, plushy and smooth, but thats about it. Anyone can make slow landyachts. The ride of the Germans is exceptional cause it gives you this smoothness and confort without compromising the driving dynamics.

I had a s350L on a 59 plate and I have to say it's the best car I've ever driven as a daily. The interior was insane especially the reclining rear seats

I own a D4 A8l and for such a large car it is easy to park and get around the city, feels more like a A4. Running a stage 2 tune and pulley kit on the 3.0 tfsi, good for 430HP (S8 power) absolutely awesome car.

I can relate with what Matt said about the gearbox clunking when it’s going from 2nd to first when slowing down, I have a DSG and it does that 5 times out of 10 when slowing down

Actually, speaking of the S-Class, how come UK cars don’t get the rear-wheel-steering system that is offered in other markets? Heck, it’s even offered in _some_ RHD countries such as India (at least that’s what I was told, anyway), so if they can offer it there, I don’t see why they can’t offer it in the UK as well…

@@joshbacon8241 I'm from Denmark myself, and there's lots of stuff that isn't offered here as well, mostly because they deem it too expensive (because of our 150% tax) or unnecessary. I'm guessing it's the same there, if not enough people bought the option on other cars, they may be losing money by offering it (somehow) and choose not to. But I'm sure you can talk to them, and get a car that has it. It's all about the money, pay and you shall receive.

Why doesn’t Audi offer that special predictive suspension on the normal A8 in the UK like they do in other markets, when they offer it on the S8? If they can offer it on the S8 in the UK, then I see no reason why they can’t offer it on the normal A8 here as well…

Hi Matt, I'm not sure what mic you're using in the interior shots but you can tell your sound guy it is capturing some serious subsonic frequencies that are making good subwoofers shake the walls.. on all your videos but only the interior shots. It's quite entertaining but it can start moving objects in people's rooms :D

This A8 looks a lot better then before, also Audi needs to bring back its MMI knob, that touch screen is so difficult and dangerous to navigate while driving. You do have to take your eyes off the road lot longer then before even to change the temp, full touch looks good but is harder to operate while driving

I actually disagree on the MMI. I own one and it is very intuitive and a pleasure to use. I learned to leverage the voice commands very well and I rarely use the touch screens. I saw the D4 MMI and is not that usable as you think.

i agree. i got a BMW X6 over the Q8 largely due to the infotainment system. i hate having to play with touch screens. also, the climate control buttons on the audi are far too low. the audi takes your eyes off the road far more than it should. the X6 40i is also noticeably faster than Q8 and better composed in corners. the performance was a nice bonus but it wasn't the main deciding factor for me. i picked based on ease of use.

Great review Matt. Thank you to mention about the Mercedes gearbox when slowly down quickly.mine also seems to make a small jolt going into 1st gear when almost stationary. I do not have the S class, but its little brother E class with air suspension. One day I have my big Benz. Then I know I have achieved my Benz experience. On my 5 consecutive Mercedes now.

I think the small boot is a deal-breaker for such a car. I like the idea of the hybrid for such a vehicle, but as it stands, I'd be sticking with the six-cylinder petrol version.

I agree. Mercedes' upper tier cars feel special, like an occasion. You don't get that same sense of occasion with the upper tier models from Audi or BMW, or any other brand outside of Bentley, RR, etc. Even on the exterior the Mercedes makes a statement while the A8 is just handsome. And the A8 adopting the already-aged headlight design from the A4 did not help it. It will be interesting to see how the new 7 Series fares. It's taken on the single-panel instrument and info display from the PREVIOUS S-Class so in some way it already looks dated. And the exterior leaves much to be desired, for me.

I'm missing the part where you where stuffing suitcases in the boot. That would be very handy. I just need to know if the s580e can fit 2 big suitcases as i need a to get one and rather have the hybrid than the petrol or diesel (eqs isn't an option as it's way too small)

I'm on my 7th S Class LWB now (Current one is 2017 model) Looking to upgrade at some point to the Hybrid (maybe an older 500e), but they all start at least 8 or 10k more expensive than the equivalent diesel I do a lot of miles, so that adds up to a lot of diesel I can buy with the difference. I do like the latest model though, and having test driven the Audi A8 (2020 model) I much prefer the S Class as the touchscreens in the Audi get all "fingerprinty" very quickly!

Fun fact but if you see a Mercedes around town. It defer from the rest of the cars. It looks so astonish and expensive especially the S-class. I always see many people taking pictures of them. The others not so well. Don't get me wrong but the Merc design makes it looks special

The console on the Mercedes puts me off straight away! It just looks like an add-on!

I've had the S Class, BMW, Range Rover, and now and Audi A8. The S Class is the only one I didn't have a problem with. It drove like I was floating on clouds. Driving my A8 now is a blast and I enjoy that I see very few on the road. But the Audi Connect only worked for 6 months. Once the 6 month trial period was over, I haven't been able to connect my phone to the Audi Connect in the car. Neither the dealerships (I've taken to more than one) nor Audi USA have been able to fix the problem. I can't even get anyone from Audi USA on the phone. I expect more from a $115,000 car. One good thing about the Audi though is that I have no issue driving in deep snow. The Quattro is awesome!! But I’m still too jaded at this point to buy another one. In short, I will not drive a BMW or Audi again. Though the most beautiful SUVs on the street, I'd have to do extensive research to buy another Range Rover. But I'd certainly drive another Mercedes from my overall personal experience. The total experience, including customer support and time spent in the shop (or lack thereof), is what I base my assessment on.

Thats weird. My Audi A8, bought in 2018 has the Audi Connect Membership till the End of 2030. Also the A8 is actually softer with the adaptive Suspension. I have also leased an S Class before. And it was soft, but not as good as my current A8. The Turning Circle is also extremely good with rear wheel steering. Didnt have that on the S Class

They’re for different types of people. The S-class is for the person that wants luxury while being flashy. The A8 is for the wealthy businessman who wants a classy look

Hello Mr Watson, Thank you for many years of your informative blogs on motoring and related topics on vehicles. You ARE WOW. Straight to my question..I have always thought that the audi S series are far more premium than the A series. I however almost always find the later being put to test against the mercedes S class and BMW's 7 series. Can you put the audi S8 Vs mercedes S class and BMW 7 series to a performance test and may be also the A8. We can have a foursome. Can we? Shall we? Nelson Kamau from Nairobi Kenya.

Both are great, but I'd take Merc over Audi any day. Like Mat said, It just feels and looks more special.

I think in this segment the S-class is easily the "best" car - a more complete car than a 7 or an A8. And yet - the S-class doesn't really seem like a car I would want to drive as my car; it really is a chauffeur car. I actually kind of like that in this comparison, the A8 is a little scrappier - not as good but maybe more character as a result of its flaws. Coupled with being more unique, putting down better numbers, and being quite a bit cheaper - that's likely where my money would go. And I would know it's not an S-class, and that would be kind of the point.

As an S class person, the S class, ever since the W221 with the 7 speed, has had some cars with rough downshifts while others had no such thing. The 9 speed introduced in the W222 and carried into the W223 is no different. About 50% of them will have uncomfortable downshifts.

I prefer the Audi. The Acceleration, the braking and the turning radius was greater. While Luxury may be a bit more appealing in the Benz (which is 1 of my Favorite Makers: Benz, BMW, Audi) had you dived deeper the all-wheel you'd noticed how much better the all-wheel drive system is as well. Benz may be smoother but Audi is a Better Performer.

Can someone tell me why the S-class for years have had that purple tint on the windows? You can see it clearly at 14:20 Can't be the Infrared light protection and it's obviously not just tinting? Or am I wrong. Looks expensive and nice though.

I also feel that the gear changes between 1st and 2nd aren’t smooth, it had a jolt to it but after that all the gear changes are smooth

Mercedes is more expensive but the work they have done this time with this new gen of S and C class is astonishing. Feels like floating on road, extremely silent the best driving experience. Tried the audis and although excellent not at the same level of what Mercedes did with this new gen or cars

@@aovint63 no lol - name any car with rear wheel steering on the base model and production quality comparable to an A8 / S class / 7 series rear wheel steering has advantages but definitely also plenty disadvantages for regular people so Audi, BMW and Mercedes obviously won't make it the default for these cars, mind you an A8 is only half way up on the scale of what you can buy from Audi

Depends on the model I love both brands. For example I would still take an s class over an a8 but I like the a6 more then the e class. Q3 over GLA/GLB, a3 over a class/cla. I think audi does the cheaper side of the range better than Mercedes and I think Mercedes does they’re more high end models better then audi
