Audi driver jumps red light at level crossing on live news Suffolk

The footage, from ITV Anglia, captures the car jump the light during a news report on the dangers of ignoring warning signs at level crossings in Westerfield, Suffolk. The white Audi approaches the railway track just as lights on either side begin flashing red. The driver ignores the signs, and barely makes it through the crossing before the barriers begin to close.

This is why I think Network Rail should install rising bollards at all level crossings to stop this from happening. The psychological effect from the risk of them damaging their car would instil patience and they wouldn't take stupid risks like this. They could potentially derail a train by doing this if the crossing is at a high speed section of the line.

@@BloodMoonASMR After the barriers are lowered or simultaneously. Another option is 6 penalty points on the licence and £10000 fine. Actually I think that would hurt more!

But if they're present at an automatic half-barrier crossing such as this, you're taking away the point of having the half-barriers in the first place: so that if someone is trapped on the crossing they've always got a way off.

What makes it even more dangerous is that crossing is AHB (Automatic half barriers). The crossing isn't connected to the railway signalling system, that train was probably about 15-30 seconds out.

As soon as you see a light show up on those lights STOP! Even if the light is amber it’s understandable if you’re too close to avoid an accident but NEVER under any circumstances cross if ANY light shows up on that crossing

Amber light is a STOP command. I used to think it was prepare to stop but that's wrong. Same with road traffic lights.

Stop if it's safe to do so. If you're at a speed and there's someone close to you behind, it's better to still continue to avoid someone rear ending you.

The second car pasts the lights ,3 seconds after the amber light shows . The officially emergency stopping TIME for a car , in dry weather at 30 MPH is 4 1/2 second . ( this includes just 1 second, as the reaction time ) .

More like 5 or 6 seconds. Light comes on at 27s into video and he passes at 33s on the timestamp. Or you can count yourself. He had plenty of time to react and stop. Especially as lights changing isn't a surprise, you're supposed to be looking out for it. Also that 4.5 seconds is assuming you're slowing down. So the fact he took 5 seconds to pass it when he was maintaining his speed shows he could have easily stopped. At 30mph he was 74 metres away when the amber light came on if we assume 5.5 seconds. So he actually could have stopped at 60mph in an emergency...probably far less given the official numbers are decades old and based on cars with terrible brakes by today's standard

The white car driver was just irresponsible. Well within any stopping distance. The formula for stopping distances wasn't ever based on cars. It's a friction coefficient formula that demonstrates the nonlinear relationship between speed and stopping distance. x squared over 20 plus x =y. x is speed in MPH and y is the overall stopping distance in feet. Convert to meters to align with the current highway code.

Some car drivers lose their brains when they get behind the wheel. The machine takes them over, they think they are gods gift to the world. In order to stop this from happening double the price of the test and lift the age to 30. This should reduce so-called accidents because most accidents are in the17 to 25 age group. Also the power of the vehicle should be by age of driver. Young drivers should not be allowed fast cars until they have driven on roads for a minimum of 10 years.

Why is traffic stopped for 5 minutes at a crossing when the train is not near?

Because trains pass close enough in either direction. At certain times of the day that is normal for the one near us. Also, she said 'at level crossings like this one'. The Ipswich to Felixstowe line is very quiet, so doubt you have to wait more than 3 minutes on average, unless something is going down or coming from the port in Felixstowe. Better to wait 5 minutes and get home safely than jump the lights and risk killing yourself or others I guess.

Because that train is going slow. Fast trains can clear the crossing in 30 seconds.

The short answer is because of idiotic behaviour. If Network Rail, or whatever they choose to call themselves these days, could rely on drivers and pedestrians actually following the rules, trains would go through a lot quicker. But because that's not what happens, the extra time is to deal with events such as people jumping the barriers, so action can be taken before a train is allowed through the crossing.

Because trains have priority at level crossings not road vehicles. The idea is that trains have a green signal throughout if at all possible. The first signal that the train could pass that could slow them down could be up to 2 miles away. Therefore the barriers need to be down and signals cleared with the train at least one signal back from that one. It takes 30 seconds to a minute to shut the barriers, so after a minute the train is still over 2 miles away.

@@geoffreylee5199 the line to Felixstowe which branches off is 25mph limit on junction. The East Suffolk line becomes single track there. Not sure on limit on that set of points.

I done the same as that Audi driver last month. Never even realised till I got the letter thru the post. 3 points and a £60 fine or I can go to a level crossing awareness course. I think I’ll choose the latter.

I've done this today on a camera covered crossing. It was a complete mistake, came round a corner into low sun and the lights turned red a second before I got to the crossing. I had no choice but carry on as I'd not of stopped on time. I'm expecting a letter. Did you do the level crossing safety awareness course?

To be fair, the Audi went through with it on red, so they were in the wrong. Amber I guess you can get away with, but red you can't. It's the same as a traffic light. If you left a green light on your car and got hit by someone going through barely on red, you wouldn't accept that would you?

@@davidgoodchild7152 You can't get away with jumping amber lights unless you are unable to stop safely - they mean the same as red lights except in that situation.
