I like how you called out Audi for choreographing and staging this journey. Can you tell more about the brake regen? Is it only adjustable on the fly or can you set it to always be at a desired amount?

Great to see that the infrastructure is improving - however we seriously need more 100kw+ chargers in UK! Luckily you can buy a Tesla today with instant access to the supercharger network - which is about to get upgraded to V3 and provide 0-80% in 15-20 minutes.

@@cokyrobes oh that's nice. I've heard charging a Tesla here in Finland costs about 2-3€ worth of electricity so 10£ for a charge seems fairly expensive however nowhere near the cost of filling a petrol car

Great review! The e-tron is a beautiful car. I had the opportunity to ride in one from my Audi dealership in Toronto and was impressed with the luxurious cabin, spacious interior, comfortable seats, build quality, and smooth drive. Since it is not a Tesla, my concern is how abundant are the public charging infrastructure not only within Toronto and GTA, but within Ontario, Quebec and across Canada. Also, USA. I have heard now that Petro Canada Gas is installing charging stations (not sure if they are DC high speed) which will really help. I am seriously considering this vehicle for end of next year.

On August 24th of this year I did a solo 1445 km or just over 900 mile drive in 19 hours in my Audi E-tron. I left from St. Charles Missouri just 30 minutes drive outside of St. Louis to Dillon Colorado leaving at 8 AM and arriving in Dillon about 60 miles west of Denver CO at 2 AM and including gaining one hour because of the time zone change from Central time to Mountain Time. Elevation gain was 8559 feet or 2,609 Meters. Average Effecincy was 2.8 Miles per KWH and on the highway I was traveling at well over 65 and in many cases over 75 MPH. This would not have been possible with out the Electrify America high speed chargers along the route. These chargers were located conveniently and just off the Intersate Hwy 70 in the towns of Independance, Missouri, Salina Kansas and Colby Kansas. It took less than one hour at each of the following towns to leave the hwy, drive to the charging station, have a snack and go to the washroom and then drive back to Hwy 70 . The only charger that I used to get me to Dillon a 5000 foot elevation drive from Denver was an hour and 5 minute charge at a Charge Point Charger just outside of Denver Airport to get me the last 60 miles or 100 km and I had 14 miles left on my battery when I finally arrived and got to sleep. All of the chargers were open to the public! This trip was part of a much larger drive from the west coast of Canada in Victoria BC to the farthest point East of North America, St. John's Newfoundland. I then turned around and drove back through through the Maritime Provinces and then into the state of Maine and the USA, down through the eastern seaboard where I really headed west when I arrived in Washington DC, down to Nashville, North West to St. Louis, the section just mentioned, to Santa Cruz, California, then North and back home to Vancouver British Columbia. A total of just over 23,000 KM or 14,290 Miles. This trip was started on July 2nd and finished 63 days later. Overall the trip was amazing. My E-tron exceeded all my expectations on range and averaging well over 360 KM effective range and in some cases over 420 KM and routinely did 250 miles effective range during my trip across the USA. Sad this is an Audi organised route with defined charge points, including one Audi installed just for this trip. Be nice to see a genuine test where you just go where you want or change your mind and go somewhere else without having Audi arranging charge stops.

How long did it take to get all those petrol stations up? How long are they building that Ionity netwerk of chargers just like fastned and Tesla etc.. Tesla was the first to do that and they have a really good network around Europe.

Well, yes of course it was cheating and ugly, BUT, it was only at one occasion and chargers are not EVERYWHERE but are getting built rapidly with new ones popping up every month. It does not speak against the benefits of an EV.

Here in Spain the lack of fast chargers is crazy. Madrid is fine, but here in Valencia there are so few that it's impossible to own a BEV, much as I want to. I don't have a driveway to charge either, so home charging is out of the question. Hopefully the government here will get its act together soon!! There's some development happening, so things may be improving.

Just read the e-Tron was the best selling car in Norway last month. That's right - not just the best selling EV but the best selling car regardless of fuel type. Must be a country of millionairs over there I guess ;)

@Coleen West it's been proven time and again that even if you run an EV on a purely coal fired grid (which even in the states doesnt happen) they produce less harmful emissions over their lifetime than an ICE vehicle. People who claim otherwise seem to forget it's not just what comes out the exhaust pipe that's the problem with petrol/diesel. It has to be drilled for, transported (by burning more of it) refined (which uses enormous amounts of electricity, on average each litre of fuel refined uses enough electricity to move an EV 20 miles) transported again, stored & pumped (using more electricity) before finally being burned at less than 30% efficiency. This cycle is repeated thousands of times over the life of the car. As for power sources other than coal and nuclear that can take up the base load you have natural gas (not ideal as still needs burned but better than coal) wind, hydro & wave/tidal which can also be coupled with grid level storage. Even America's grid is slowly getting cleaner which means EVs get cleaner. An ICE only gets worse over its lifetime.

Just got an 2022 E-tron and I have been learning how to plan my long routes accordingly, but also getting around the “range anxiety.” It also sucks that fast charging and charging to 100% is bad for long term battery care, as it’s counter intuitive to me to maintain battery State of Charge (SOC) to just between 40-80% for longevity.

Very honest report, calling the 'corporate' charge points cheating rubbish! Well done! It is typical for the VAG mentality, they are not able to be really honest. Driving an e-tron is driving the expensive way. It only charges quickly on DC which is expensive. AC charging is much less effective (i.e. slow in miles/hr) due to the high consumption of the e-tron. An efficient car can add quite some miles/hr on an 11 kW AC charger when you go shopping, for example. Let alone charging at home: you need a long night to get the e-tron fully charged.

Try the same in the U.K. Mine does about 130 miles only. The ecotricity network is rubbish and most chargers trip after a couple of minutes.

I am curious how much time you think the road construction in France set back the time? For a planned test this was fairly good with the exception of the corporate charger at the airport in Italy. It was good to know that, in general, the electric infrastructure in Italy is lagging a bit. Here in the States I think it would be much more challenging to find charging stations, let alone fast charging stations.

Why is the temporary charger "cheating"? Did Audi,before the trip,imply that their car would inherently do better than a Tesla (which is the ONLY competitor claiming an infrastructural lead) [rightly so]. If this was a debate about the viability of EVs over greater distances, vs ICE, then it would be "cheating",but its not a debate about EVvICEoverEU,is it?

It wasn't VW that cheated direct, it was a few software engineers from the contractor writing the software who probably just wanted to get their work done. The CEO then rolled out a modification to fix the problem which hardly worked. He got in trouble for telling the stock market that he had a solution, when it didn't really work. A securities problem. The interesting thing is that when portable emissions testing equipment was applied to 30 new cars in Britain VW wasn't even in the worst half, their solution was somewhat more robust. VW cars are now 60% below the required standards for the last 2 years or so. The problem applied to models without Ad Blue.

So 27kWh/100Km... Not too far from a model X IIRC. And that also means >350Km/h charging with 150W and if battery 10-80%. Not bad, but without charging infra-structure or ability to charge at home it is not pratical. I went the plug-in route for now and a slow charger near work is all I need

I don't think much of Audi cheating on the chargers. I presume the Tesla supercharger network could have filled in the gaps had you been in a Tesla? Things are moving though, five years ago there would have been no chance of meeting the challenge.

Not really Audi’s fault governments haven’t invested in electric charging points. The UK has very few fast chargers and quite a few charging units that show on the charging map are slow chargers at car dealers who are closed overnight. Imagine how far ICE cars would get with no petrol stations.

John Harvey Why is it the government’s fault? Why should they invest in public charging stations? They should only if their aim is to promote electric vehicles but certainly not using the your ridiculous logic and analogy of petrol stations. As far as I know, petrol stations aren’t built by or invested in by the government 🤣 but private enterprise alone i.e. the oil and petroleum companies. So yes, it is Audi’s fault as in the same vein, it should be the manufacturers responsibility to build the correct and adequate infrastructure to support the vehicles they choose to pump out, in this case reliable charging infrastructure to support their vehicles. Essentially, as Tesla have done from day 1 starting 6-7 years ago. We already know Audi and the wider VAG group are massive cheaters (diesel gate anyone), so nothing different here and they’ve consciously chosen to cheat in this test once more by setting up temporary infrastructure to justify and support their ridiculous “commuter-only” cars priced at £70k plus. The government’s responsibility lol, what a ridiculous statement - grow up John and smell the coffee.

Google earth proposes a 12 hour trip via Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne. 4 Stops should have been enough. For both the driver and the battery.

Hear about BP's Chargemaster and Shell's recharge chargers? Those are part of the new energies the oil companies are trying out, and new energies is what shell is calling em. Not just electric and chargers, but other energy sources too like ethanol, and shell has been a leader in that area for a long time. Theyre also trying to make cellulosic ethanol, which is a new form of ethanol. In the midwest, where I live, its a source of income for farmers, especially in Iowa. Even if it may seem like a new thing now, blending ethanol with gasoline is nothing new. Theres old ads from the 40s and 50s that advertise ethanol blends as a additive for power and to keep the engine running nicely.

Nice video, beautiful country to drive through. 2.4mpkwh is awful considering how good the weather was for most of that drive. Try it again in an efficient EV (and let them have a cheat stop as well) and you would make it. For example Bjorn Nyland just done 1000km in a model 3 in 10 hours.

@@harsimranbansal5355 theres no doubting it can charge fast. It actually has a slightly better KW charge curve than a Model X. The problem is with 2.5mpkwh efficiency you are actually adding less useable miles per hour at that higher charge speed making it a more expensive car to run and having to stop more often.

I know everyone is tired of hearing how amazing Tesla cars and infrastructure is but this road trips have been easy and fast for years now because of their charger network, engineering and software... the legacy car companies are just starting to crawl in the right direction but without the whole package, they are saying they want to keep the oil business model in place.

No legacy industry can compete with a software company (Tesla) at the pace of innovation that is needed. It isn't that the industrialist are not trying; they just don't stand a chance to innovate fast enough without Teslas advanced AI. At some point they will have to license Tesla technologies to survive.

Ionity is building quite fast so that network is coming too. And yes Tesla is still ahead. If you are head of VAG and have all those hundreds of thousands of people working for you making engines etc it is really hard to change that vision. They are doing it while some others are stepping down like Honda and Nissan. Even though they sell electric cars.

Much is made of the high charging rate but do that too many times and it will seriously shorten battery life, replacing any Audi part is expensive but a battery that size.... OUCH!

About the "fake charging station" at this airport - this seems to be Bolzano airport. There actually is an 150KW charger 10km from there but it only has one stall. With all the press cars arriving at the same time this would not have been an option of course. There also is an 150KW Ionity charger 80 km north of Bolzano at the border to Austria. But your point is still valid - not all regions in Europe already have decent charger infrastructure just yet.

It’s a shame that Audi chose to put the screens for the side mirrors so low, if they had chose to move them just above the far left or right fan vent in the dead space where the front pillar sits may have been a better choice and more natural to look at maybe then more people would choice this option

Note in regards to the 'efficiency' of the car. A Tesla Model 3 charges at 90% efficiency when charged over 8 hours. The faster you charge the worse the efficiency, dropping down to as little as 60% if fast charged over 30 minutes. Even if you are getting 20kWHr/100km at the wheels you probably thrown away 10 KWHr during fast charging. I doubt eTron is any different.

I am doing similar distance across those countries in my ICE at least 4 times a year, it takes me almost always half of the time with two stops and wife/4 kids/luggage in my MPV.... still a long trip to go, too bad as I would be eager to make a swap and saving 35 Euros from my budget in refueling difference :-/

I think all e-car companies must set up together the charging systems and terminals as many as it could be. If there is limitation like this moment, e-car is not a really convenient vehicle yet on earth that most buyers may consider. Or develop a home-user charging system that users can charge everywhere even at home.

VAG and a few other are doing just that and started Ionity here in Europe and Electrify America in the US. For 90% of the journeys we make in a year every EV is already more than enough for that.

We've got around 70 fastened & ionity stations within a 150 mile radius of each other (Netherlands), come on rest of Europe pick up your game (not looking at you guys Scandinavia ;) Btw those are 175KW stations and up, I don't count 50KW as fast charging.

This trip was done at a 45km/hour (1440 km in 24hours!) Who has time to drive this slow? With an LPG Mercedes CLK that I had, two drivers ,it would be done in less than 13hours (Lpg 82l and 60l gasoline tank - both full)

It was impossible to park properly at the first charging station...I don't blame you...after all it was an empty car park.

Yeah, try that same to Portugal or south Italy where they don't have IONITY yet - 1000 miles in 24 hours and more. Or try a trip to Greece! Only a Tesla can do those at the moment.

@@mgammeren Yeah, but when? It will not be the next 5 years for sure. They have a goal of 400 locations for 2020 which they are not going to meet as they just passed 200 since 2018 and after that they are not building more for the time being. Tesla is already at 1500 and have more stalls on place and are building more stalls every day. Actually I don't see IONITY catching up, ever.

@@teslakiller6959 Why would they not catch up? Tesla did all this in how many years? Quite a few more as Ionity is doing this. So in that regard Ionity is building faster as Tesla did. And having already a network in place like Tesla has it's eay to scale the existing ones up to more stalls etc. But you have to start somewhere and IOnity is doing a good job in that.

@@mgammeren IONITY are doing A job, not a good one. IONITY started with their first stations in 2017, we are 2020 and they will probably make 300-350 of their target of 400 stations 4 years later. No comment. The reason IONITY will never catch up is that they are actually not planning to catch up at all - they have their target at 400 locations for now. At some point the joint venture will be abandoned since BMW and Daimler are facing other more challenging difficulties like actually building EVs. And there is really no reason for them to build a lot more of these networks as other companies are building stations too (Fastned, Shell etc.) Tesla will retain their charging advantage far into the future and unless they decide to open their stalls in Europe, this will be their huge advantage - much like Apple's Appstore was for 5-6 years.

@@teslakiller6959 2017 is just 3 years ago. We can only know how good/bad they are doing if you know how many chargers Tesla build in the same first 3 years. And from my memorie it was not that they build hundreds more here in Europe than Ionity does now. In Belgium the first SC was build in 2014, now we have 11 with 10 more planned. Yes it is a small country yet a major passthrough for Dutch, French and German people. So we need those chargers and ones with many stalls. We already have 4 Ionity with a few more planned. So they do it "better" as Tesla did.

All could be done with wireless charging (self charging)...zero range anxiety...zero cheating stations...zero charging point anxiety....with 100% pure hybrids..(not pure Ev nor Phevs)...cable free .wireless charging in full hybrids is my choice for UNINTERRUPTED .NONSTOP..CONTINUOUS TRAVEL.....keep it simple ..

This is all rather sweet, but in reality unless you are determined to drive 1400+Km in 24 hours, and have people capable of driving like that, a 200 mile range in an EV is enough for most “standard drivers”. My Mercedes has sensors in it that tell you when your driving behaviour suggests you need a stop, and I’ve rarely reached more than 2hrs before it thinks 20 mins off would be a good idea. In the UK that’s about 120 miles, in Europe probably nearer 150 miles. Even a co-driver needs coffee and a pitstop, so doubling up save a little time but not much. Once most EVs hit 300 mile range, REAL rather than imagined range anxiety will be a thing of the past, and I predict batteries with an energy density of +35% will start production in 2020.

And yet many people like to forget just that. Or that when people say " I keep driving because when I stop that is the moment I get tired." Even though my wife and myself are two young people and I did 100k km a year for my job on a vacation we would stop after every 2,5 hours.

As much as I like electric cars, as far as I can see, if you want to do a long trip it ends up being a nightmare! With a petrol car you would have topped up the tank only once half way, in 5 minutes! I think plug in hybrids are a lot more convincing in this regard. For most people you'll never do more than 50KM per day, but when you want to do a long trip you just load the tank with petrol and off you go!

@all If I wanted to buy an EV SUV (or crossover) now in 2020 which should I get? A) iPace, B) etron (no leather an option?), C) etron sportback (no leather an option?) D) Wait for iX3, iX5, ID Crozz or XC40 Recharge ? Note: I’m averse to animal sourced leather, so I excl EQC. Thanks guys!

In the next 20 years it will not even matter what charger is where or which is it since it will be only going to 5 to 10 minutes to top up full ! But you're reporting is on point but Audi may not take this very kindly !

I also driven from Bled to western Germany! I would never take that route! You go from Bled, to Austria, enter Germany near Salzberg, chimsee and then Munich, then Frankfurt, either via Nuremberg or Stuttgart and then to Amsterdam! Why on earth someone would go to switzerland and france! This route skips free German autobahn in favour of Swiss and French toll roads.

I’ve just driven nearly 900 miles in a diesel car to France for skiing and this took 17.5 hours, at the moment I just don’t think electric cars are the answer the range isn’t good enough and in the uk they take way to long to charge

You don't say anything about the costs...what happens when the batteries worn out? In a diesel if the turbo goes out then you replace the turbo, in a reg engine a pipe bursts you replace the pipe which is not too much trouble but when the batteries for this E tron worn out then what? What would be the cost? How long these batteries run for before they go bust? 2 years? 3 years?

VW Group has a weird EV lineup. The more expensive ones eTron and Taycan are very inefficient, artificially reduced performance and ridiculous battery management (fast charging and cut capacity). I predict that the ID.3 and ID.4 will be the best EVs for the money, as they'll be a lot more efficient, while keeping the full battery capacity usable with fast enough charging. Just like with Tesla, the Model 3 and Model Y have the best value for the money.

This was a 1000 mile test NOT a 1000km test like Bjorn. Bjorn keeps it to 1000km so the results are closer together. Nay as advantages a particular vehicle has over another vehicle is blunted by the distance. He also introduces numerous variables into each test. If you want to compare vehicles, the only legitimate way is a side by side test run. You could tell this test wasn't going well when the presenter started playing up the aesthetics of the vehicle.

How can you drive from Lichtenstein into France (which is what you said)? Why standard footage of country roads? You have motorway virtually all the way. Sorry not impressed by this report. It tells me nothing really about the car. Average speed, tires, etc would be useful information.
